Christchurch Street Names B Current name Former name Origin of name Suburb Additional information Bridge Street Named after Admiral Sir Cyprian Arthur George Bridge GCB (1839-1924). Bridgewater Place Christchurch City Libraries Updated July 2013 New Brighton Bridge was a British Royal Navy officer. This name continues the theme of British Admirals, explorers and fighting seafarers used in New Brighton. First appears in street directories in 1919. Parklands Named in 2011. Christchurch Street Names B Current name Former name Origin of name Suburb Additional information Bridle Path Road Christchurch City Libraries Updated July 2013 Bridle Road The path which leads over the Port Hills from Lyttelton to Ferry Road. The horses had to be led by the bridle to the summit, hence the name. Lyttelton The road was hacked out of the rock by a working party in 1850 and was the way taken by the pilgrim settlers. The Bridle Road is mentioned in The Lyttelton Times in 1851. First appears as a listing in street directories in 1892, the first year Lyttelton streets are listed. Recognised as a road on 14 June 1920.
