Christchurch Street Names B Current name Former name Origin of name Suburb Additional information Burke Street Livingstone Street and Hanover Street. Christchurch City Libraries Updated July 2013 Formerly Livingstone Street. Named after David Livingstone (1813- 1873). Re-named Hanover Street. Later incorporated into Burke Street. Named after Edmund Burke (1729-1797). Sydenham, Addington Livingstone was an explorer, missionary and philosopher. Burke Street east of Antigua Street was formerly Livingstone Street. Burke was a British orator, philosopher and politician. Both streets were named by a committee of the Sydenham Borough Council on 19 January 1880 and both first appear in street directories in 1887. Livingstone Street was re-named Hanover Street on 7 March 1904. This was incorporated into Burke Street in 1918 because of duplication of the name. Christchurch Street Names B Current name Former name Origin of name Suburb Additional information Burlington Street Christchurch City Libraries Updated July 2013 May have been named after Richard Boyle, 3rd Earl of Burlington (1694- 1753). Sydenham Lord Burlington was an architect and patron of the arts. Probably named to continue the theme of “poets and writers” streets of Sydenham, Addington and Waltham named by a committee of the Sydenham Borough Council in January 1880.
