Lost Christchurch Former name Origin of name Where Additional information See Source Further information Anthony Named after 145-147 Designed by architects Hart Information taken from Runacres House Anthony Worcester Street and Reese and built in 1925. a plaque on a wall of and Hannaford Runnacres. Named Hannaford Chambers. the building by Richard Chambers The original occupants were dentist Wilfred Irving Ward and Henry Kiver Allison, the medical practitioner R. B. Baxter and Perpetual Trustees Ltd. By 1928 the occupants included British General Electric Co. and the South Island (N. Z.) Motor Union Mutual Assurance Association. A. J. Newman, barrister and solicitor, owned and occupied the building from 1984 to 2002. In 2003 Anthony Runacres, an insurance broker, purchased the building which was in disrepair. Extensive renovation and strengthening followed. Demolished after the earthquakes of 2010/2011. Greenaway in 2010. Christchurch City Libraries Updated July 2013 4

First “Advertisements”, Star, G R MacDonald and Peacock’s Road, opposite mentioned in the Star in 1885 9 July 1885, p 1 dictionary of (or Peacock) Albemarle Street. in an advertisement. Never Canterbury Place appears in street directories. “Sydenham Borough biographies: P232 James Peacock (1843?-1926) Council”, Star, 23 July is listed as a resident from the early 1890s until the early 1889, p 4 1900s. He was a boot “Sydenham Borough manufacturer, the first to use Council”, The Press, 17 machinery. Re-named Argyle Street in 1889 when it was taken over as a public road. Disappears from street directories in 1993.
