12 Food & Health Just a three-hour drive away from Guwahati, Every year in Shillong, Forever Young Sports Club (FYSC) organises a Wine fest where Guwahatians throng to the event to taste different wines produced from fruits like black berries, passion fruit, strawberry, peach, pineapple, valencia, ginger, plum, watermelon and other fruits. Seeing the rise in stipulate of wines in Guwahati we sorted out some amazing Indian wine brands, whose demands are steadily increasing. Wine production in India dates as back as far as 500 BC. Although most of the wine was consumed for ceremonial and healing purposes, the oldest wine in India was an Ayurvedic invention called Draksharishtha, the name literally meaning grape wine in Sanskrit. Indian vineyards started their careers by sticking to predominantly four French varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc. Other interesting varietals such as Viognier, Merlot, Chardonnay and Reisling are slowly gaining prominence too. India’s main wine industry is located in Nasik around the Sahayadri hills and Narayangaon. A small amount of wine is also produced in South India on the outskirts of Bangalore. Sula Vineyards is situated 180 km northeast of Mumbai in Nashik. It is the perfect accompaniment to the varied flavourful cuisines of Asia. • Sula Blush Zinfandel: This popular favourite is fun and fruity, abounding with aromas of honeysuckle and fresh strawberries. A versatile, “anytime” wine great for picnics, parties, and hot summer days. • Sula Brut: This celebratory sparkling wine, is a creamy, complex nectar that goes down like a dream. The vineyards are located in the Sahyadri range in Nashik. The winery is headed by French master wine maker, Jean- Manuel-Jacquinot. Four Seasons Vineyards: is in the Baramati district, the winery is modeled on the French chateau style. Four seasons have both red and white wines which is easily available in the cities of India. Its famous wine is Four Season Shiraz. Some more Indian wines which are served by the restaurants in Guwahati are Chantali’s Chardonney, Vinvallet. Marlot is considered to be the all time favourite and famous fruity flavour red wine which is available in all brands and Chardonney in white wine. Indian wines are mostly consumed by Indian people same as French people demand for French wine, thus the wines are based on the guest choice.
