16 Fashion Skin deep in art! neHa jain If you want to look cool and chic, get inked because this is what everyone is doing these days. Everyone has been bitten by the oh-so-cool tattoo bug. Getting your first tattoo is a rite of passage. Walking on the wild side can be intoxicating, because you know your parents won’t approve. But you see this beautiful art on others and want to join them. Maybe you want to up your cool quotient, or simply celebrate an event or have a divine connect with your tattoos which give you strength. GPlus visited a few local tattoo studios and found out the latest tattoo trends. At Ripz Tattoo & Piercing, located on Rajgarh Link Road, the tattooist Ripon Basak aka Ripz said “The trend of tattoos in Guwahati is slowly increasing. I draw on 3 to 4 clients daily. People from the age of 20 upto 35 get themselves inked. Parents also often accompany their kids to the studio to get their child inked.” He even has a client who got himself a tattoo at the age of 67. Another famous tattooist in Guwahati, Gunajit who owns Tatynpobka (tattoo in Russian) Tattoo studio in Rajgarh said, “While earlier, people got their tattoos done from places like Bangalore, Delhi, Bangkok et al but now, it is only next door. There are about 20 tattoo studios in Guwahati.” When asked if people are willing to pay to get inked, both had different views. Ripz said, “Although tattoos are exorbitantly priced, people don’t mind shelling out money to ink their body.” While Gunajit expressed that many a times he has to compromise on price since he understands that the pockets of college students are not so deep. TATTOOS in TREnd There are as many styles of tattoos as there are artists. Tattoos which are in vogue here are tribal tattoos and portraits. Girls opt for more conventional ones like butterflies, cupids and angels on their back and calf, while guys like signs of OM or gods. Some get scripts like Gayatri Matra inked, others go for names of their partners, parents, kids. One of the inspirations to be getting tattoos is our celebs. People come with a wish to get a tattoo which Hrithik, Deepika or the Rock sport. With more and more stars getting inked, the craze is at an all time high. Although ambigram and 3D tattoos are in fashion in the metros, here they do not seem to be catching up. Permanent tattoos are more admired than a temporary one which stays on your skin for about a week. They are just popular in birthday parties, school fetes, and similar occasions. But before you get your guitar gently inked on your bicep or a butterfly on your back, it’s important to do your research and know what you’re getting into. Be Picky About the Parlour While a spontaneous trip to the tattoo parlour always sounds like a fun idea, you should take a bit of time and pick out a good one prior to hopping in the car.
