CAPT. ISAAC JOHNSON AND HIS MEN.<br />

ISAAC JOHNSON was <strong>the</strong> son <strong>of</strong> John, <strong>of</strong> Roxbury. He was<br />

born <strong>in</strong> England and came to Massachusetts with his fa<strong>the</strong>r's<br />

family probably <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> company with Gov. W<strong>in</strong>throp. He was admitted<br />

freeman March 4, 1635.<br />

He was <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Artillery Company <strong>in</strong> 1645, and was its capta<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong> 1667. He was ensign, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> " Rocksberry " military company<br />

previous to 1653, and on June 13th <strong>of</strong> that year was elected cap-<br />

ta<strong>in</strong>. (See petition <strong>of</strong> dissent, Mass. Archives, vol. 67, page 45,<br />

overruled by <strong>the</strong> Court.) He was representative 1671.<br />

He married Elizabeth Porter, <strong>of</strong> Roxbury, January 20, 1637,<br />

aDd had six or more children, <strong>of</strong> whom <strong>the</strong> sons were John, died<br />

1661, Isaac and Nathaniel.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> 6th <strong>of</strong> July, 1675, while <strong>the</strong> forces under Maj. Savage<br />

were at Mount Hope, Capt. Johnson was sent with a small escort to<br />

conduct <strong>the</strong> fifty-two friendly Indians, raised by Maj. Gook<strong>in</strong>, to<br />

<strong>the</strong> army. From <strong>the</strong> fragment <strong>of</strong> a letter from Capt. Johnson to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Court, dated at Boston, July 10, 1675, we learn that a company<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se Indians was sent back from Mount Hope with him,<br />

and that some trouble occurred with one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> oldest, called Tom,<br />

at Woodcock's Garrison, where <strong>the</strong>y were rest<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> march.<br />

This is <strong>the</strong> letter as it rema<strong>in</strong>s. I am not sure that this is not <strong>the</strong><br />

whole <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> letter or statement<br />

Upon <strong>the</strong> 4 th day <strong>of</strong> this last week be<strong>in</strong>g at Woodcockes house and <strong>the</strong><br />

Inglish and <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dians get<strong>in</strong>g some refreshment and fix<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir arms<br />

<strong>the</strong>re was one from <strong>the</strong> oldest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong>dians that was sent backe with<br />

us from <strong>the</strong> Army and withdrew himselfe from our Company under <strong>the</strong><br />

pretence <strong>of</strong> get<strong>in</strong>g a helve for his hachet but stay<strong>in</strong>g long we sent out 6<br />

men to see if <strong>the</strong>y could f<strong>in</strong>d him <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir search <strong>the</strong>y found his hachet and<br />

a new knife : <strong>of</strong> his and returned without him we be<strong>in</strong>g desirous if it might<br />

be to f<strong>in</strong>d what had becom <strong>of</strong> him sent aga<strong>in</strong>e 6 men <strong>the</strong>y could not yet<br />

f<strong>in</strong>d him, we went to super (that is we seaven Inglish) before it was quite<br />

darke and while we were at super <strong>the</strong> said Tom did make aproach to<strong>war</strong>ds<br />

<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>dians and was deserned by <strong>the</strong>m and som <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m called to him<br />

(sum say it was one or more <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>diau Sent<strong>in</strong>ells called to him) and<br />

bid him stand but he would not but fled away upon <strong>the</strong> which <strong>the</strong>re be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

sum stire or commosion amongst <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>dians we rose from super and went
