A journal account <strong>of</strong> this expedition was kept by Major Walderne,<br />

which Mr. Hubbard published <strong>in</strong> his History, from <strong>the</strong> ori-<br />

g<strong>in</strong>al copy. Only an abstract can f<strong>in</strong>d place here.<br />

On February 17th Major Walderne, with his whole command,<br />

sailed from Blackpo<strong>in</strong>t for " Portland."* On <strong>the</strong> east side <strong>of</strong> Cape<br />

Elizabeth one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir scouts, John Pa<strong>in</strong> (former keeper <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Major's Pennacook truck-house probably) appeared and reported<br />

<strong>the</strong> way clear <strong>of</strong> ice and Indians. They sailed across to " Mary<br />

Po<strong>in</strong>t" (Mare-po<strong>in</strong>t), arriv<strong>in</strong>g late at night. On <strong>the</strong> 18th <strong>the</strong> scouts<br />

found a birch canoe and <strong>the</strong> tracks <strong>of</strong> three Indians at " Muckquet "<br />

(Maquoit). Just as <strong>the</strong> companies were drawn up for <strong>the</strong> march,<br />

five canoes <strong>of</strong> Indians landed on an island opposite (probably Birch<br />

Island) and signalled for a parley; John Pa<strong>in</strong> was sent, and <strong>the</strong>y<br />

promised to br<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> captives <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> morn<strong>in</strong>g. Pa<strong>in</strong> returned to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Indians, and " Simon," one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir leaders, came as a hostage<br />

<strong>in</strong> his place, who be<strong>in</strong>g questioned by <strong>the</strong> Major, declared that<br />

" Bl<strong>in</strong>d Will " stirred up late trouble ; that <strong>the</strong>y desired peace ; that<br />

Squando was over at <strong>the</strong> island and would return <strong>the</strong> captives to<br />

Major Walderne. Squando was summoned, and replied that he<br />

would meet <strong>the</strong> Major if he would come half way alone <strong>in</strong> a canoe.<br />

Major Walderne refused, and <strong>the</strong> Indian promised to come <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

morn<strong>in</strong>g. On <strong>the</strong> 19th <strong>the</strong>y appeared <strong>in</strong> fourteen canoes. They<br />

* Falmouth, this probably <strong>the</strong> first mention as " Portland."<br />
