<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> mean time Major Willard and his force arrived, and so <strong>in</strong>tent<br />

were <strong>the</strong> Indians about <strong>the</strong> mach<strong>in</strong>es, that his company, com<strong>in</strong>g<br />

about an hour after dark, ga<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> yard <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> garrisoned house<br />

before <strong>the</strong> enemy perceived <strong>the</strong>m. There was a large body <strong>of</strong> Indians<br />

posted about two miles away, on <strong>the</strong> road by which <strong>the</strong> Majors<br />

company had come, and ano<strong>the</strong>r party <strong>of</strong> over one hundred<br />

pass unharmed, depend<strong>in</strong>g upon those nearer to strike <strong>the</strong> blow ;<br />

and <strong>the</strong>se latter depend<strong>in</strong>g upon <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs for an alarm, which ei<strong>the</strong>r<br />

most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> published accounts that I have seen have ei<strong>the</strong>r conflicted<br />

with his or have been o<strong>the</strong>rwise mislead<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

On August 7th fresh forces arrived from Boston, and all rema<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

at <strong>the</strong> garrison till <strong>the</strong> 10th day, when Capts. Hutch<strong>in</strong>son and<br />

Wheeler, with all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir company that were able to travel, came<br />

away and arrived at Marlborough on August 14th. Capt. Hutch<strong>in</strong>son<br />

died <strong>the</strong>re <strong>of</strong> his wounds on <strong>the</strong> 19th, and was buried <strong>the</strong> next<br />

day. Capt. Wheeler and <strong>the</strong> remnants <strong>of</strong> his company rema<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

<strong>the</strong>re until <strong>the</strong> 21st, when <strong>the</strong>y returned home to Concord.<br />

Of those who were engaged <strong>in</strong> this affair, <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />
