CAL YOUNG MIDDLE SCHOOL DECEMBER 2009
From the Principal
Cal Young Families,
At the end of this week, we conclude our first trimester. Some students will have
changes in their schedules while others will not. Please check with your child to see
if their daily schedule will be adjusted.
I thank all of you who attended parent/teacher conferences this month. If you were
unable to meet with a teacher, please contact them by email or phone to discuss your
child’s educational needs. Staying involved in your student’s learning is very important to his
or her success.
We appreciate everyone who donated food to our canned food drive. When Mr. Beard drove the
cans up to Food For Lane County’s collection site, the workers were impressed and surprised by our
contributions. In these tough economic times, it feels wonderful to give back to our community.
Our Site Council meets the third Wednesday of every month beginning in January. We welcome any
parent who would like to come and learn about our school wide projects. Currently we are wondering if
there is a teen topic you would like to learn more about. In the past, middle schools across the district
have offered seminars on internet and cell phone safety, how to recognize depression, drug/alcohol
awareness and what to expect in high school. Please email me if you have ideas or suggestions about a
concern you’d like to hear more about.
We continue to work with our students to make Cal Young a safe place for all. If you hear something
that we need to know, please contact Mr. Beard or me as soon as possible.
Finally, with the new trimester beginning on Monday the 7 th , make sure to take a note of our new
schedule. While the start and end times of school remain the same, the biggest change is that periods will
begin either a little later or earlier than before. The new schedule can be found on our website.
Take care and I wish you a wonderful holiday season —
Cydney
From the Library – Resources for Reading and Research
Thank you for supporting the Cal Young Barnes & Noble Book Fair
Thank you to the amazing students, staff, parents, volunteers, and community members who made Cal Young’s Barnes & Noble
Book Fair a great success! Not only did we make over $850 for the Library, we had a great time doing it!
Our “Cal Young Night” included a variety of Cal Young talent. Ms. Harpole gathered student art work and created the beautiful art
display that gave a fitting backdrop for the performances.
During the “Mock Battle of the Books,” I was busy asking questions and did not take any photos. If anyone has some photos
of the Mock Battle and is willing to share a few with me, please e-mail me at arnold@4j.lane.edu. Many thanks to all the
participating students!
Many volunteers and staff members deserve a huge THANK YOU for making the Book Fair a success. Our Volunteer
Coordinator, Dayna Dunteman, gathered a wonderful crew to hand out vouchers, answer questions, welcome supporters, and
keep things running smoothly. Many thanks to Missy Lathon, Sarah Peters, Rebekah Travis, Kristina Fisher, Penny
Klein, Brenda and Ryan Radloff, Sandi Hoselton, Brenda Wisnewski. Ken Carpenter, Trevor Carpenter, Shari
Murphy, Julie Stubbs, Carrie Andreason, and Randy Murphy (roadie extraordinaire!). I also want to thank Mr. Bliss,
Ms. Fiszman, Ms. Freese, Ms. Harpole, Mr. Loy, Ms. Ketsche, and Mr. Powell for making the student performances
possible. If you helped and don’t see your name, please let me know so that I can thank you!
THANKS also to the many CY supporters who donated books to the Cal Young Library. Many of the “wishes” for books
were fulfilled! Next year, I need to make sure that the Barnes & Noble cashiers get your names so that I can thank each of you
personally.

CAL YOUNG MIDDLE SCHOOL DECEMBER 2009
You Can Make a Difference for Cal Young with Box Tops!
Here’s how you can help:
Music Notes
Cal Young families can be very proud that we are one of only two schools in Oregon to make
the Ambassador’s list.
The band, orchestra, and choir presented their first concert of the year in support of UNICEF.
Some kids were so inspired that they also went Trick O’ Treating for UNICEF. This combined with
donations at the door, brought in a total of $500 to be donated to UNICEF. Yea! Way to Go!
The choir finished up their trimester with a field trip to perform at Sheldon Oaks. They have done a lot of performing in 12
weeks: the DFZ assembly, the UNICEF concert, Barnes & Noble, and then at Sheldon Oaks. We look forward to hearing their
beautiful voices again and want them to sign up for choir again for the 2010-11 school year.
Several small ensembles performed at Barnes & Noble. It was exciting to see so many students inspired to perform chamber
music and they sounded great. Please save Saturday, February 20, as that is the date of the District 12 Solo Ensemble festival.
Playing chamber music is a wonderful way to improve your musicianship, because students must count and play independently.
Plus it is fun!
We’ve recently launched our 2009-2010 Box Tops for Education fundraising campaign.
This year we’ve set a goal of earning $500!
Since 1996, Box Tops for Education has helped America’s schools raise over $300
million to buy the things they need. School budgets are tighter than ever, and
Cal Young is asking for the support of families and community members.
• Clip Box Top coupons from favorite products and drop them in the bright orange collection box
in the school office.
• Sign up to support our school on the Box Tops website at btfe.com
• Shop at over 100 favorite online stores through the Box Tops Marketplace ® (btfe.com/
marketplace); our school earns up to 15% of your qualifying purchases, at no additional
cost to you!
• Purchase books through the Box Tops Reading Room SM at Barnes & Noble; our school
earns up to 6% of your purchases.
• Help a classroom by purchasing needed items through the My Class Essentials registry.
Sign up to support our school today at www.btfe.com.
You’ll get updates on our school’s Box Tops earnings, money-saving coupons, family-pleasing recipes,
chances to win Bonus Box Tops for our school, and the latest Box Tops news!
CAL YOUNG MIDDLE SCHOOL DECEMBER 2009
Notes From the Nurse…H1N1 Flu Virus
H1N1 is a respiratory illness similar to the seasonal flu. Symptoms may include:
fever (greater that 100 F/37.8 C), sore throat, cough, stuffy nose, chills, headache and body aches, and fatigue.
Some people have reported diarrhea and vomiting associated with this flu.
How can we “Slow the Spread” of flu and other illnesses in our community? It is simple….
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash
after you use it.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand
cleaners are also effective.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs enter your body that way.
CAL YOUNG MIDDLE SCHOOL DECEMBER 2009
ATTENTION MIDDLE SCHOOL PARENTS!!
‘New’ immunization required - Tdap booster- has been required for
• 7 th graders since school year 2008-09.
For school year 2009-10, 8 th graders will also need it.
(Tdap is a booster for tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis/whopping cough)
Influenza vaccine is also recommended, please discuss with your
health care provider.
By February of 2010, all 7 th and 8 th graders are required to have documentation of this shot to continue school attendance. We
do need written verification of booster shots in order to update the required Oregon Certificate of Immunization Status in the
school health records. (Please see form below.) Our school nurse recommends you discuss this with your health care provider at
the next doctor visit or physical examination and be sure this important booster shot is received.
This vaccine contains protection against pertussis, or whooping cough. Pertussis is a disease that can be transmitted by adolescents
and adults to babies and can cause severe illness, even death. The vaccine protection that kindergartners have against
pertussis generally provides little, if any, protection by the time a child is in 7 th grade. For several years doctors have been recommending
this booster shot, and it will now also become a requirement for school attendance. On Friday, November 13, 2009, the
4J Letters of Notification of Incomplete Immunizations were sent out.
This vaccine is also available for adults as the next tetanus booster is due, so ask your health care provider for more information!
