Holiday Gift Boxes for Needy Children
This year, Cal Young’s woodworking, art, and leadership
classes will again collaborate to create holiday gift
boxes for needy children. Small wooden boxes are
being made in Mr. Bliss’ woodworking classes, which
students in Ms. Harpole’s art classes and Mr. Schiff’s
leadership class will decorate and fill with trinkets and
treasures donated by CY students. These “Blissful
Boxes” will then be included in the food boxes provided
by the CY community for needy families in our
area. Thank you for supporting your students’ participation
in this CYMS community service project.
No Name Calling!!
This is an issue we take seriously at Cal Young, where part
of our motto is Respect All. In October, Homeroom
classes did a lesson on this important issue, learning
about things like bullies, bystanders, and allies. Each
class then created and filmed a skit showing how
students might deal with name calling if they witness
it. This video footage is now being edited by Cal Young
students, and the plan is to show the skits as part of
the morning announcements during National No-
Name-Calling Week at the end of January.
Way to STEP UP, Cal Young!
CAL YOUNG MIDDLE SCHOOL DECEMBER 2008
From the Assistant Principal
Hello from Brian Beard,
I am currently filling in for Sara Cramer who is away on family leave. We look forward
to her return as school starts up after the winter break.
Geography Awareness Week just ended with a lot of new geographical information,
guest speakers, and a fun homeroom challenge. This year’s homeroom winners were
Ms. Ketsche’s and Ms. Hohenemser’s classes. We focused on the countries of North,
Central, and South America. Homerooms competed to see who could use the other
homerooms’ clues to guess their countries. Students will be competing at the end of
December in our annual Geography Bee. I would like to thank Ms. Terri Simons for all the
work and effort she put into making Geography Week such a success.
Currently, we are gearing up for our annual Food Box project. Each year at Cal Young, students and staff
work together in homerooms to develop several menu plans along with the food to complete each menu.
The food and other needed items are collected in homeroom. The items are placed in decorated boxes for
needy families in the Bethel area and some of our own Cal Young families. Just prior to our Winter Break,
the boxes are delivered to the families. We held our first Activity Night this year and students brought in
food for the boxes. That night we collected more than 200 lbs. of food. If you would like to provide a gift
or item for the food boxes, please talk to your students. They will know the number and ages of those in
the family their homeroom is supporting.
OAKS (Oregon Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) will be an ongoing activity at Cal Young in the
coming months. These test results are one way of indicating student progress and help us to place students
in classes in the upcoming school year. Please ensure students get plenty of rest each night. Even with a
later school starting time, some students arrive quite late and miss valuable instruction. We all appreciate
your continued support with all attendance concerns.
I would like to welcome Ms. Leslie Maahs as our newest staff member. Leslie, as many of you might
know, has been a friendly face around here for many years. I’m are excited to have her here and the energy
and talents she brings. She will be filling in for Ms. Hillary McClintick, who, by the way, just had a baby.
Congratulations to Hillary and Ryan and their new baby girl.
I speak on behalf of all the Cal Young staff extending a heartfelt thank you for allowing us to be a part of
your children’s lives while here at school. We send our warmest regards for a wonderful holiday season for
all of our Cal Young families. See you at school!
Have a safe and happy holiday season,
Brian Beard
From the Library – The Reading Thing
Many thanks for making the Book Fair Safari a success!
This year’s Scholastic Book Fair Safari was a great success on many levels. Over $4,000 worth
of books were sold, and $500 was donated to students to purchase books through the Book Fair’s
scholarship program. The “One for Books” program earned a total of $88, money that is donated to
Toys for Tots and KIDS (Kids in Distress Situations). Congratulations to the 7 th grade who came
in first with donations.
The proceeds of the Book Fair support essential library services, including the purchase of books
and funding an author visit. The Book Fair cannot happen without the help of volunteers. I want to extend a huge thank you
to Kathy Young and Missy Lathon for coordinating this year’s Fair. They are a dynamic team! They were joined by Susan Kelly,
Terri, and a number of student helpers. Many thanks to you all! If you are interested in being part of a committee to run next
year’s book fair, contact Sam at 687.5459 or arnold@4j.lane.edu.
Many thanks to Kathy Young and Missy Lathon! Students browsing at the Book Fair
Two of
Rick Riordan’s
suggestions
Winter reading suggestions
Two popular series at Cal Young are The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan and Twilight by Stephenie Meyer.
If you’ve heard your student mention these books, you might be interested in some of the books on one
of these two lists. The first list is Rick Riordan’s recommendations, which are available in the Cal Young
library:
http://www.rickriordan.com/index.php/books-for-children/recommendations/
Next month, I will publish the second list, After Twilight, for students who like
the series by Stephenie Meyer. This list is currently available in the library, thanks
to Vanessa, one of our Library Assistants.
World Book Discover – a new resource
The Library Website at http://schools.4j.lane.edu/calyoung/library/ (or do a Google search
Tdap booster shot REQUIRED for 7 th graders
By February 18, 2009, all 7 th graders will be required to have documentation of this shot.
Courtesy notices were mailed in November, if we do not already have the date on file. The
Health Department will issue Exclusion orders in February.
We do need written verification of booster shots in order to update the required Oregon
Certificate of Immunization Status in the school health records. If you received a courtesy notice, please return it as soon as
you can, signed and dated.
This vaccine contains protection against pertussis, or whooping cough. Pertussis is a disease that can be transmitted by
adolescents and adults to babies and can cause severe illness, even death. The vaccine protection that Kindergartners have
against pertussis generally provides little, if any, protection by the time a child is in 7 th grade. Doctors have already been
recommending this booster shot for several years
This vaccine is also available for adults as the next tetanus booster is due, so ask your health care provider for more
information!
