CAL YOUNG MIDDLE SCHOOL DECEMBER 2008 Music Notes The Orchestra and Band students were able to raise just over $600 for Unicef at their 6 th annual Unicef concert. They were very proud to be able to use their musical talents to help others. The Orchestra and Band will be performing at a Holiday assembly on the 19 th of December. Carly G. and Rebecca R. on violin and Erin M. and Laura L. on cello recently performed at the Festival of Trees at Valley River. This year Wyatt C., Carly G., and Erin M. are members of the Junior Orchestra. Nathan K., Simon C., Nathan K., and Dorian Y. are members of the Little Symphony. The Orchestras are made up of some of the best music students in the Eugene/ Springfield area. The students must go through a rigourous audition process in order to be accepted. They will be having a concert on December 8 at South Eugene High School at 7:30 p.m. Cal Young is proud to be represented in these groups. Gale Fiszman Orchestra/Choir/Drama Teacher Interested in advancing your skiing skills; thought about ski racing? Check out WARP, Willamette Alpine Race Program. Perfect for winter break ski enthusiasts -- December 26 through December 30. Flyers are available at school. This is a family oriented ski club that focuses on teaching kids the thrill of skiing and ski racing with other young skiers between the ages of 7 and 18. Coaches are supportive and enthusiastic and will teach racers the skills and techniques they need to participate in ski races and become excellent skiers. CAL YOUNG MIDDLE SCHOOL DECEMBER 2008 Tdap booster shot REQUIRED for 7 th graders By February 18, 2009, all 7 th graders will be required to have documentation of this shot. Courtesy notices were mailed in November, if we do not already have the date on file. The Health Department will issue Exclusion orders in February. We do need written verification of booster shots in order to update the required Oregon Certificate of Immunization Status in the school health records. If you received a courtesy notice, please return it as soon as you can, signed and dated. This vaccine contains protection against pertussis, or whooping cough. Pertussis is a disease that can be transmitted by adolescents and adults to babies and can cause severe illness, even death. The vaccine protection that Kindergartners have against pertussis generally provides little, if any, protection by the time a child is in 7 th grade. All Eugene and Bethel students (including home schools, private and homeless kids), as well as the students’ siblings, ranging in age from birth to 19, may be seen at My School’s Health Center. What can students be seen for? Any general health issues or concerns—including mental healthcare—that would be attended to by a traditional family or pediatric practitioner. If the patient needs more specialized care, staff will refer him or her to a specialist, including a dentist or optometrist.
