PHILOPTOCHOS Χριστός Ανέστη! Truly, He is risen! We hope you all had a blessed Lenten Season and a Joyous Pascha. Philoptochos Calendar May 1 st – Board/General Meeting in the Aegean Hall at 7pm May 19 th – “Heart to Heart” Crafting Session May 20 th – Blood Drive May 27 th – Finish Crafting Session May 25 th – Feeding of the Homeless at St. George May 27 th – Narthex Duty Many Thanks… …To those who helped with Tsourekia sales. …To those who helped with our Greece “Care Packages.” …To all who donated money for Easter Flowers. …To all who helped decorate the church for Palm Sunday and the Resurrection Service. …To those who dyed and netted the eggs. …To those who prepared all the flowers to beautifully decorate our icons. …To those who decorated the kouvouklion. …To all who are mindful of those in need by remembering our food basket and cash collection in the Narthex to benefit the Ephraim Project, and help with their monthly feedings. …And to all who have lent their hearts & hands this month. “Heart to Heart” Pillow Crafting Session Please bring your bagged lunch and join us on Saturday, May 19 th , when we will meet in the Aegean Hall from 10am-3pm to make another batch of pillows for the cardiac patients at Florida Hospital. We will need help in sewing and stuffing the pillows. Everyone is able to join in this very worthwhile project. No crafting skills are necessary, and the fellowship as we work is a joy. Those who are not able to contribute their time can participate by donating a yard of cotton fabric, a bag of fiber fill, or by making a monetary contribution to offset the cost of purchasing these items. Everyone should support this wonderful project in some way. There are few among us who have been so blessed as to not know someone who has gone through what these patients suffer. The need is truly there! Please lend your support. National Philoptochos/OCF Commitment It’s that time of year again, when we must think of the spiritual futures of our high school graduates as they move forward as young adults into the secular world. Our goal is to register all our college students studying away from home. Please support this nationwide effort! Each registered student will be connected with a Philoptochos member in their college town so the parent and the student will have a contact person and a connection to the new town and its local Orthodox Church. If your loved one is not registered yet, please contact Flo for a registration form. When we are contacted by OCF with their list of students studying locally, we will need to match these students with a Philoptochos Member in our community. Please let Flo know if you are interested in serving as a local contact person to a student and their family, and a connection to our Holy Trinity Church. Please support the Philoptochos OCF Ministry so we may continue to nurture our children in our beautiful Orthodox Faith. Narthex Servers Needed Philoptochos is responsible for serving on the 4 th Sunday of every month. Unfortunately, we cannot seem to get enough volunteers for this very important task. Ideally, there should be six volunteers. Two individuals to maintain the candle supplies and candle boxes, another two people to monitor the doors into the nave, and the last two would bring the large candles up to the icons, pass the trays, and usher during Holy Communion and Dismissal. Narthex servers are expected to arrive in church before 9am, and remain until after dismissal. Please consider making yourself available for Narthex Duty. Philoptochos Workshop St. Basil and St. John Chrysostom were among some of the Early Church Fathers who spoke and taught extensively on their social and philanthropic concerns. As the church grew, these concerns were expressed in many organized and practical ways, through the support and administration of hospitals, orphanages, homes for the aged, cemeteries for strangers, and houses for the poor. Philanthropia is a tradition of the Greek Orthodox Church dating back to the Byzantine Empire, and those who practice Philanthropy are truly the hands of the church in the world. Eighty years ago, over 300 Greek Orthodox women’s clubs from churches cross the country began to function under the Archdiocese, being officially merged into the one National Philoptochos Society. Some of these early chapters had actually been active for almost 40 years, ministering to the needs of those around them. Philoptochos wasn’t formed to do the work; it was formed to organize the work that was already being done. Our year-end Philoptochos General Meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 5 th , at 7:00 p.m. in the Aegean Hall. As of this writing we expect Metropolis of Atlanta Board Members Dee Nicholaou and Cindy Xenick to offer a mini workshop on Philoptochos, with a focus on its organization, the duties of the officers of the chapter board, and an overview of the many Philoptochos obligations and commitments, on both the National and Metropolis level. Although this presentation was originally intended for the board, we believe it will be very informative, so we invite all the “friends of the poor” in our community, members and non-members, to come and learn more about the workings of our beloved Philoptochos Society, the largest Christian women’s charitable organization in the United States. As St. James tells us in his epistle, “Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.” Then he tells us to be “doers of the Word”, and not just hearers. The members of the Philoptochos are “doers. Every one of us, striving to be as fully Christian as we are called to be; showing our faith by what we do; exercising our Christianity in an organized and productive way. All ladies and gentlemen in our community are invited to join as members and associate members. By joining Philoptochos, you will teach your children and your grandchildren, by your example, to give of themselves to the church, and to its good works through Philoptochos. Everyone, in every Greek Community, should be either an active or a supporting member of Philoptochos. It is your right, your privilege, and your obligation. HELLENIC ACADEMY Η ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΑΚΑΔΗΜΙΑ The Hellenic Academy Field Trip to St. Augustine, Fl - Saturday May 19th The Hellenic Academy is organizing their end of the year Field Trip to St. Augustine, Florida. DATE : Saturday May 19th (day-trip) TIME : Arriving in St. Augustine at 10:00 am. TRANSPORTATION: We would like to charter a bus, dependent on the level of participation. We will begin with a tour of the St. Photios Greek Orthodox Shrine and the neighborhood. The afternoon can be used to tour the Old City , the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument and the Oldest Wooden School House. Information will be provided for those interested in a trolley tour ($10 per person) This trip is open to all parishioners. They have Andoni Henderer, who recently entered the 5th level. Angeliki Macdonald has just progressed into the 3rd level. Markella Vlahos and Gina Demas are both nearing the end of 2nd level book. They are all excellent students and have been progressing quickly. Along with reading, writing, and grammar, Kyria Tina also covers culture, religion, and geography of Greece.'
