Learn how to bind your own books for use as artist books,<br />
notebooks, or albums. Through demonstrations <strong>and</strong> h<strong>and</strong>s-on<br />
experience, you will gain a solid underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> how to create<br />
h<strong>and</strong>made books using basic Japanese Stab, Accordion, <strong>and</strong><br />

INTRODUCTION TO PRINTED MATTER [ESMA0141]<br />
<strong>Art</strong>ists have <strong>of</strong>ten realized their works in the form <strong>of</strong> a book or<br />
other printed matter <strong>and</strong> ephemera. Often published in small<br />
editions, they take a wide range <strong>of</strong> forms, including scrolls, foldouts,<br />
concertinas, loose items contained in a box, bound printed<br />
sheets, as well as single broadsheets or cards. Student will engage<br />
in a series <strong>of</strong> short projects that reflect the historical range<br />
<strong>of</strong> both avant-garde <strong>and</strong> popular production <strong>of</strong> edition works <strong>and</strong><br />
explore the image-text formats <strong>of</strong> the artist’s book-as-object,<br />

Unlike many obsolete technologies, letterpress hasn’t vanished.<br />
Letterpress has been seized by artists, <strong>and</strong> has been transformed<br />
into a 21st Century art-making medium. There’s a letterpress<br />
resurrection going on, <strong>and</strong> you can be part <strong>of</strong> it. In this introductory<br />
course, you will learn type setting by h<strong>and</strong>, locking up,<br />

Most <strong>of</strong> us are familiar with pop-up structures as an element <strong>of</strong><br />
children’s books, but they can also be used to create greeting<br />
cards with a sense <strong>of</strong> fun. In this class we will explore the basic<br />
forms <strong>of</strong> the pop-up <strong>and</strong> create a different greeting card design<br />
in each class. From forms that literally do pop up from the page<br />
to those that unfold with delicacy <strong>and</strong> elegance, the structures<br />
will inspire students to create cards that reveal their own personality<br />

INTRODUCTION TO SEWING TECHNIQUES [ESTX0124]<br />
Using industrial equipment <strong>and</strong> h<strong>and</strong> sewing, students learn<br />
basic sewing techniques, consider appropriate uses <strong>of</strong> seams,<br />
pockets, darts, buttons <strong>and</strong> buttonholes, zippers, trims <strong>and</strong><br />
closures in relation to garment production. Through the making<br />
<strong>of</strong> a h<strong>and</strong>bag, pillow or other article <strong>of</strong> choice, students practice<br />
a different method each week <strong>and</strong> may choose to create samples<br />

FROM EXISTING WOOLLENS [ESTX0125]<br />
Up-cycling is an exciting movement that takes existing objects<br />
<strong>and</strong> makes them into new, unique works. In this course you will<br />
explore up-cycling using woollens, such as sweaters, blankets<br />
<strong>and</strong> jackets, to create new, one-<strong>of</strong>-a-kind garments. Students<br />
will learn felting, appliqué, embroidery, embellishment <strong>and</strong> basic<br />
pattern-making techniques. Sewing <strong>and</strong> felting by h<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />
on machine will be studied. Participants are asked to bring four<br />
“previously loved” sweaters to the first class (think Frenchy’s!).<br />

basic bodice patterns on a body form in order to change<br />

Individuals will go beyond basic sewing to explore techniques<br />
used to design <strong>and</strong> manufacture a skirt. Basic skirt styles include<br />
bias-cut, gore, flared, pleated <strong>and</strong> A-line. Pattern development<br />
<strong>and</strong> alterations are considered through demonstrations <strong>of</strong> draping<br />

YOU AND YOUR SEWING MACHINE [ESTX0123]<br />
In this workshop, students will learn how to use the various<br />
functions found on a domestic sewing machine. Zigzag <strong>and</strong><br />
decorative stitching, buttonholes <strong>and</strong> sewing with knits are<br />
demonstrated. Machine maintenance <strong>and</strong> basic repairs are also<br />
addressed. Through the making <strong>of</strong> samples, students will gain a<br />
deeper underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> how to use their sewing machine effectively.<br />
Students bring their domestic machines to the workshop,<br />
scissors, pins <strong>and</strong> scrap fabric for making samples <strong>and</strong> testing<br />

INTRODUCTORY THROWING [ESCE0112]<br />
Using stoneware clay, this course introduces the fundamentals<br />
<strong>of</strong> wheel-thrown pottery. Through weekly demonstrations,<br />
students will learn the essentials <strong>of</strong> centering, throwing <strong>and</strong><br />
trimming. Using the elementary form <strong>of</strong> the cylinder, students<br />
will learn how to throw <strong>and</strong> trim bowls, cups <strong>and</strong> vases as well<br />
as larger cylindrical forms. Students will also be introduced to<br />
h<strong>and</strong>le making <strong>and</strong> various forms <strong>of</strong> surface decoration using<br />

NEW! INTRODUCTION TO MI’KMAW BASKETRY [ESTX0131]<br />
Students will learn the basic fundamentals <strong>of</strong> Ash Basket Weaving.<br />
They will learn the traditional method <strong>and</strong> techniques <strong>of</strong><br />
preparing the wood <strong>and</strong> plants in an ecological <strong>and</strong> economical<br />
manner. Learning the traditional twists, curls <strong>and</strong> bends in Traditional<br />
Mi’kmaq Basketry, all the while encouraged to explore the<br />
materials <strong>and</strong> their versatility in creating personal <strong>and</strong> unique<br />
works <strong>of</strong> art. Be prepared for a material fee <strong>of</strong> $100 for two<br />
bundles <strong>of</strong> ash splints (black, white). The instructor will provide a<br />
bundle <strong>of</strong> sweet grass, for braiding <strong>and</strong> weaving, to each student.<br />

This introductory course deals with still life, the nude figure,<br />
the environment, <strong>and</strong> different approaches to drawing through<br />

through studio work, discussion <strong>and</strong> slides. Critiques <strong>of</strong> each<br />
student’s work are central to the learning process. This course<br />

This course focuses on improving the overall quality <strong>of</strong> portfolios<br />
required for application to first-year credit visual arts study.<br />
Topics are based on NSCAD <strong>and</strong> other national art school requirements<br />
<strong>and</strong> include critiquing <strong>and</strong> selecting work, producing images<br />

CREATIVE COMICS FOR AGES 9-11 [ESYP 0116]<br />
With such a rich <strong>and</strong> unique history, it’s no wonder that comic<br />

<strong>Course</strong> Materials<br />
Most Extended Studies courses require that students<br />
purchase supplies. A list <strong>of</strong> required <strong>and</strong> recommended<br />
items for your first class is outlined in course descriptions;<br />
instructors will outline additional supplies during<br />
the first class. The NSCAD <strong>Art</strong> Supply Store is located<br />
in the lower level <strong>of</strong> Granville Mall at 1874 Hollis Street;<br />
open Monday through Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm, the<br />
store can be reached by phone at 902 494.8176.<br />
Facilities Access <strong>and</strong> Use<br />
Access to NSCAD facilities <strong>and</strong> academic support<br />
areas is based on specific course requirements. Please<br />
contact Extended Studies to find out what facilities are<br />
available for a given class before you register. Students<br />
are expected to attend all sessions <strong>and</strong> participate<br />
in class in order to maintain their access privileges.<br />
Students have access to the facilities <strong>and</strong> academic<br />
support areas used by their class starting with the first<br />
class session <strong>and</strong> ending on the last day <strong>of</strong> class.<br />
NSCAD University Library<br />
With a collection <strong>of</strong> over 50,000 books <strong>and</strong> periodicals<br />
in the visual <strong>and</strong> media arts, craft, fashion, <strong>and</strong> design,<br />
the NSCAD University Library is the only Library in<br />
Atlantic Canada specializing in the fine arts <strong>and</strong> design<br />
fields. The Library also incorporates a number <strong>of</strong> special<br />
collections for exhibition catalogues, artists’ books,<br />
printed matter, <strong>and</strong> rare books in specialized subject<br />
fields. A major feature <strong>of</strong> the Library is the Visual<br />
Resources Collection which has over 140,000 slides, as<br />
well as 16mm films, DVDs, videos, CDs <strong>and</strong> audio tapes.<br />
Digital images are currently available through a number<br />
<strong>of</strong> licensed image databases. Students registered in<br />
Extended Studies courses who wish to borrow material<br />
from the library may obtain an <strong>of</strong>f-campus borrower’s<br />
cards free <strong>of</strong> charge through the Libraries <strong>Nova</strong> <strong>Scotia</strong><br />
initiative. Alternatively, patrons who present a public<br />
library card <strong>and</strong> one piece <strong>of</strong> photo ID from any public<br />
library system within <strong>Nova</strong> <strong>Scotia</strong> will gain borrowing<br />

Anna Leonowen Gallery<br />
Named after NSCAD’s Victorian founder—feisty heroine<br />
<strong>of</strong> film <strong>and</strong> theatre productions <strong>of</strong> The King <strong>and</strong> I—the<br />
Anna Leonowens Gallery is the public exhibition space<br />
<strong>and</strong> resource centre on campus. Three public galleries<br />
are devoted to the exhibition <strong>of</strong> contemporary studio<br />
<strong>and</strong> media art, craft <strong>and</strong> design, <strong>and</strong> curatorial projects<br />
generated exclusively within the university community.<br />
Weekly exhibitions primarily feature student work, with<br />
occasional shows by faculty members, visiting artists<br />
<strong>and</strong> curators, <strong>and</strong> two-week graduate thesis projects.<br />
The gallery, located at 1891 Granville Street, mounts 125<br />
exhibitions per year on average, consistently attracting<br />
more than 20,000 visitors annually.<br />
Port Loggia Gallery<br />
In conjunction with the Anna Leonowens Gallery<br />
programming, we are pleased to announce the activation<br />
<strong>of</strong> Port Loggia Gallery, a dynamic new exhibition<br />
space located at NSCAD University’s Port Campus. The<br />
Port Loggia aims to maintain an engaging program <strong>of</strong><br />
student, staff <strong>and</strong> alumni led projects that can be viewed<br />
by visitors passing through the Halifax SeaPort. Vaulted<br />
ceilings, diffuse natural light, <strong>and</strong> a high-pr<strong>of</strong>ile location<br />
make The Port Loggia Gallery an ideal presentation<br />

Seeds Gallery<br />
Located at 1099 Marginal Road, Seeds Gallery is a yearround<br />
shop for student <strong>and</strong> alumni work. Our goal is to<br />
provide a commercial venue for students <strong>and</strong> alumni,<br />
to promote a diverse range <strong>of</strong> artistic practices, <strong>and</strong> to<br />
enhance the Halifax art community.<br />

INFORMATION + POLICIES<br />
Registration for all School <strong>of</strong> Extended Studies courses <strong>and</strong><br />
programs for the Summer <strong>2011</strong> semester begins April 4,<br />
<strong>2011</strong>. For your Registration options, see inside front cover.<br />
Admission to individual courses is on a first-come, firstserved<br />
basis. Early registration is strongly recommended<br />
as class sizes are limited to ensure a quality educational<br />
experience.<br />

through Extended Studies, refer to page 11.<br />
Unless otherwise indicated, students <strong>of</strong> Extended Studies<br />
courses must be at least 16 years old by the course start<br />
date.<br />
Fees<br />
The tuition fees apply to the tuition portion <strong>of</strong> your fee <strong>and</strong><br />
in some cases may include materials supplied to students,<br />
studio assistance, <strong>and</strong> models. Fees are payable at the time<br />
<strong>of</strong> registration. Post-dated cheques are not accepted. NSF<br />
cheques must be replaced with a certified cheque or cash; a<br />
charge <strong>of</strong> $15 will be levied for each NSF cheque.<br />
Discounts<br />
A discount <strong>of</strong> 20% is available to all seniors aged 60 or older<br />
at the time <strong>of</strong> registration, with identification.<br />
Registration Deadlines<br />
The registration deadline for all individual courses is seven<br />
calendar days prior to the first day <strong>of</strong> class, unless otherwise<br />
noted. This date affects withdrawals, course transfers, <strong>and</strong><br />
course cancellations. Students may register after this date<br />
for courses that have sufficient enrollment <strong>and</strong> seats available.<br />
Wait Lists<br />
Please ask to be placed on the wait list if your course is full.<br />
If space becomes available, we will contact those on the wait<br />
list in the order they were placed on the list.<br />
Cancellations<br />
If there is not sufficient registration in a course seven calendar<br />
days prior to the course start date, the course will be<br />
cancelled. Should a course be cancelled due to insufficient<br />
enrollment or other reasons, a full refund will be issued or<br />
you may transfer to another course (paying any additional<br />
fees at the time <strong>of</strong> transfer).<br />
Weather/Emergency Closing<br />
In the event that Extended Studies courses must be canceled<br />
due to inclement weather, we will make every effort to<br />
notify current students via the eMail address provided upon<br />
registration. Students can also find this information at www.<br />
nscad.ca or by calling 902 494.8185.<br />
Transfers<br />
Students may transfer from one course to another by phone,<br />
fax, or mail. A transfer <strong>of</strong> fees, minus an administrative<br />
charge <strong>of</strong> $25, will be issued if the request for transfer is<br />
received no less than seven calendar days prior to the course<br />
start date <strong>of</strong> the course the student is leaving. Students must<br />
pay any additional fees at the time <strong>of</strong> transfer. No refunds or<br />
transfers <strong>of</strong> fees will be granted after the registration deadline<br />
<strong>of</strong> the original course has passed.<br />
Withdrawals<br />
Students may withdraw from a course by phone, fax, or mail.<br />
A refund <strong>of</strong> fees, minus an administrative charge <strong>of</strong> $25 per<br />
course, will be issued if notification <strong>of</strong> withdrawal is received<br />
no less than seven calendar days prior to the course start<br />
date. No refund will be given for withdrawal after the seven<br />
calendar-days deadline. Exceptions are made on compassionate<br />
grounds. In such cases a written request for refund,<br />
accompanied by appropriate documentation (e.g. medical),<br />
must be submitted prior to the end <strong>of</strong> the course or workshop.<br />
Under no circumstances will refunds be granted for<br />
requests received after the end <strong>of</strong> a course or workshop.<br />
Certificate <strong>of</strong> Achievement Procedures<br />
When you have completed the full requirements for a certificate<br />
program, you may make application for your Certificate<br />
<strong>of</strong> Achievement by contacting the Extended Studies <strong>of</strong>fice.<br />
T2202 Education Amount Certificates<br />
T2202 Education Amount Certificates can be issued to<br />
students registered in eligible courses each calendar year.<br />
Requests are normally received up to mid to late February for<br />
the previous taxation year. Students in qualifying courses<br />
are notified by email / phone / mail well in advance <strong>of</strong> this<br />
deadline. If you have not received information regarding a<br />
request please contact us directly. Requests received after<br />
the February deadline are processed every Friday. Please<br />
note: Not all Extended Studies course <strong>of</strong>ferings qualify for<br />
the Education Amount Certificate. <strong>Course</strong>s that have met<br />
for a minimum <strong>of</strong> 3 hours per week for more than 3 weeks<br />
<strong>and</strong> that cost more than $100 before taxes are eligible<br />
(adult courses only). Updated course <strong>of</strong>ferings should note<br />
whether they are eligible courses at the time <strong>of</strong> registration.<br />
Registration Confirmation<br />
Your registration confirmation/receipt lists any supplies required<br />
for your course(s). This information, including room,<br />
days, <strong>and</strong> times <strong>of</strong> your course, will be sent to you upon<br />
receipt <strong>of</strong> your registration form <strong>and</strong> processed payment.<br />
