From Figure 5.9, Figure 5.10 and Figure 5.11, we observe that Abaqus results for a<br />

<strong>be</strong>am meshed with 8 elements through the thickness produced the <strong>be</strong>st match with theoretical<br />

results. A minimum of 8 elements through the thickness would thus <strong>be</strong> used for all further<br />

modeling work.<br />

5.3 Crack modeling <strong>be</strong>nchmark tests<br />

A 254 mm × 25.4 mm IM7/SC780 composite coupon was modeled <strong>using</strong> three<br />

dimensional eight node linear brick elements (C3D8R). The stacking sequence for the<br />

composite coupon was [016]T. The damaged composite coupon was modeled with a crack in<br />

the middle four plies extending through the width. The material properties used in this model<br />

are listed in Table 5.7 and were determined by performing experimental material<br />

characterization tests.<br />
