management of the companies themselves perceive social opinions about them.<br />

Mathew (1993) opines that legitimacy theory arises from the concept of a social<br />

contract being established between companies and society and according to Solomon (2005:1),<br />

Hart and Owen (1992) Deegan and Rankin (1996:50-57), legitimacy theory has been proffered<br />

as an explanation why companies voluntarily disclose SER. Although, the legitimacy theory<br />

(LT) is most referred to, this has focused mainly on the social reporting aspect of <strong>accounting</strong>.<br />

This has however, not focused on <strong>environmental</strong> costs and financial reporting.<br />

2.1.3 Quality of Life theory<br />

Quality of Life (QOL) of CSR is defined by Hass (1999) in Owolabi (2007:58) as:<br />

A multidimensional evaluation of an individual’s current life circumstances in<br />

the context of the culture in which they live and the values they hold. QOL is<br />

primarily a subjective sense of well-being encompassing physical,<br />

psychological, social and spiritual dimensions. In some circumstances, objective<br />

indicators may supplement or, in the case of individuals unable to subjectively<br />

perceive, serve as a proxy assessment of QOL.<br />

According to Dierks (1979:87-107) in Owolabi (2007:60), the theory asserts that unrestrained<br />

industrial production for economic development has not only resulted in increase of social<br />

costs in heavy proportions, but also evident in <strong>environmental</strong> pollution and social ills. The<br />

adverse effect has triggered of society’s negative attitude toward industrialization. Business<br />
