SBS, <strong>in</strong>tensity dependent refractive <strong>in</strong>dex. Characterization of materials for fibres, fibre perform<br />

preparation, fibre draw<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

MODULE 2<br />

Optical and mechanical characterization of fibres Optical cable design- design objectives and<br />

cable structures, fibre splic<strong>in</strong>g. fibre end preparation, s<strong>in</strong>gle and array splices, measurement of<br />

splic<strong>in</strong>g efficiency, Optical fibre connectors, connector alignments, optical sources for<br />

communication. LED. <strong>in</strong>jection lasers, modulation.<br />

MODULE 3<br />

Photo-detectors, Photo-detector noise, signal to noise ratio, Optical receiver operation, error<br />

sources, receiver configuration„ Digital receiver performance calculations, Pre-amplifier types,<br />

high impedance and trans-impedance amplifiers, analog receivers.<br />

MODULE 4<br />

Digital transmission systems, Po<strong>in</strong>t to po<strong>in</strong>t l<strong>in</strong>ks, system considerations, l<strong>in</strong>k power budget, rise<br />

time budget, L<strong>in</strong>e cod<strong>in</strong>g, Coherent systems, heterodyne and homodyne detection. WDM concepts<br />

and components, operational pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of WDM, Optical amplifiers, Erbium doped fiber<br />
