JOHN HANNAM Continued from page 23... Benny was in his element. He instantly said yes to my interview request and was surrounded by a table full of local lovelies. When I approached the Southampton Echo a few days later to ask if they were interested in a feature on Benny Hill, they jumped at my offer. He would not do an interview for them. It seemed uncanny that two of Britain’s most successful comedy stars, Benny Hill and Frankie Howerd, should die over the same Easter weekend in 1992. I have been a lifelong admirer of Matt Monro and feel so privileged to have been considered a friend of his. I still see his family and have had his widow, son and daughter on my radio show. Matt was a British singer to rival and surpass many of his American contemporaries. The very last time I saw him was at the Savoy Holiday Centre, at Yarmouth, for a special charity show for the R.N.L.I. Just a month or two later his illness was made public. That was the night I almost pushed a mindless and arrogant yuppie into the urinals, after a rude comment about Matt. I still regret not doing it. I took a picture of Matt, in his dressing room, which never came out, and recorded an interview with him, which I have never been able to find. Quite remarkable. I met a couple of my idols in unexpected places. The legendary Bobby Moore came for a public appearance at Buywise, Newport, and proved such a perfect ambassador for British sport and nothing was too much trouble. I wonder what he would make of all these foreign mercenaries who now play in our domestic game. The other was the chilling Donald Pleasence, who was filming at Niton Undercliff. I’d seen Halloween a couple of nights before but, thankfully, Donald proved gentler in real life. Arthur Lowe was an acting genius who discovered real nationwide fame late in his acting career. I still love the Dad’s Army series. When I knocked on his dressing room door, for our arranged interview, he shouted:” Come in – I’m washing my hair. I won’t be a couple of minutes.” That was 25 years ago. Now I know what he meant. Having morning coffee with Larry Grayson in the Cliff Tops Hotel in Shanklin was a unique experience. Poor Larry was virtually marooned in the hotel. Whenever he went out he was mobbed by his ageless fans. One day he almost had to be smuggled out of Regent Street. In the late 50s Arthur Worsley was the best ventriloquist in the world, with his dummy Charlie Brown, and he even appeared with Elvis Presley on the famed Ed Sullivan Show. Once, for a story in the now defunct IW Weekly Post, I was made up in drag. Arthur was completely fooled and was heard to say:” I’m sure I’ve met that woman somewhere before.” He'd been to tea at our house a few days earlier. Eventually he was told the truth – and loved it. I often think of so many great moments with stars that are no longer with us. These include Russ Conway, George Best, Dave Allen, Carl Wayne, Reginald Marsh, Michael Sheard, Leslie Crowther, Sir John Mills, Frankie Vaughan, Ted Rogers, Ian Bannen and Ray Moore. One lady who became an Island star was Military Road farmer Sylvia Jones. I talked her in to coming on to my radio show and the phone lines were jammed. The audience response was similar to when Cliff Richard appeared on the show. She even rang me to ask if I would mind if she went on to Radio 4. What a character! Every time I drive along the Military Road I think of Sylvia Jones and her wonderful Island accent, amazing stories and her old brown smock tied up with string. 24 Island Life - www.islandlifemagazine.net
