6.2.2 <strong>Religious</strong> Life as Communion<br />

Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> participants construct <strong>the</strong> ideal <strong>of</strong> religious life as a relationship with one<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r. <strong>Religious</strong> life is constructed as a communal life <strong>of</strong> shar<strong>in</strong>g with o<strong>the</strong>rs, expressed <strong>in</strong><br />

terms such as love, care, joy, support, forgiveness, prayers and service. It was presented as a<br />

shared space <strong>of</strong> mutual support where sisters, through care and love, help each o<strong>the</strong>r to feel at<br />

home. This communion is enacted especially through community prayers, which are<br />

described as a source <strong>of</strong> unity. This communion was also described as be<strong>in</strong>g expressed <strong>in</strong><br />

ways <strong>of</strong> help<strong>in</strong>g each o<strong>the</strong>r with everyday chores such as laundry, cook<strong>in</strong>g and iron<strong>in</strong>g. For<br />

<strong>in</strong>stance, one participant from <strong>the</strong> diocesan congregation enunciates:<br />

You know <strong>the</strong>re was someth<strong>in</strong>g – someth<strong>in</strong>g we called “itu flower” that‟s a<br />

way <strong>of</strong> >practical charity< which we really embark on … <strong>the</strong>re was <strong>the</strong><br />

fetch<strong>in</strong>g water … wash<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> cloths, you know sweep<strong>in</strong>g corners …<br />

This participant enumerates <strong>the</strong> different services <strong>the</strong>y render to each o<strong>the</strong>r. The ideal<br />

communion is also expressed <strong>in</strong> tak<strong>in</strong>g time to f<strong>in</strong>d out how each o<strong>the</strong>r is far<strong>in</strong>g, particularly<br />

after each day‘s busy life at apostolate, and socialis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> even<strong>in</strong>g after <strong>the</strong> day‘s work.<br />

They share stories and relax to enjoy each o<strong>the</strong>r‘s company. Some participants described how<br />

<strong>the</strong> shared stories have helped <strong>the</strong>m to get to know one ano<strong>the</strong>r more deeply. One participant<br />

drew on <strong>the</strong> ideal expressed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> scriptures <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> so-called ―servant song‖, to picture what<br />

<strong>the</strong> ideal is; ―say<strong>in</strong>g we are here to help one ano<strong>the</strong>r; we are here to walk with one ano<strong>the</strong>r –<br />

we are here to bear one ano<strong>the</strong>r‘s load.‖ Generally, <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs show a consistency <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

participants‘ understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> religious life as communion. One participant expla<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong><br />

ideal <strong>of</strong> communion by employ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> idea <strong>of</strong> religious life as similar to early Christian life:<br />

… religious life was-is dated back to <strong>the</strong> community <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> early Christians,<br />

we share th<strong>in</strong>gs toge<strong>the</strong>r; pray toge<strong>the</strong>r; break bread toge<strong>the</strong>r … this<br />

break<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> bread toge<strong>the</strong>r and shar<strong>in</strong>g toge<strong>the</strong>r is not just a magic …<br />

people are = <strong>the</strong>y are people who made it possible and <strong>the</strong>-e … you see I<br />
