materials including pamphlets and DVD materials, and a specific algorithm of 

patient follow-up and sleep apnea treatment compliance monitoring to be 

implemented by respiratory therapy in a team type of an approach

In this leadership role, I have orchestrated the following: 

Complete revision of lab protocols and procedures 

Navigated the sleep lab/center through a significant expansion phase involving an 

increase in sleep lab beds from 4 to 8 and a complete change in location at the 

hospital main campus, and an additional lab site 

Led an effort to reduce sleep study interpretation turnaround time (from 3 months 

to less than 1-2 weeks) and enhanced the overall quality of the data acquisition 

and scoring of the sleep studies 

Led the lab through successful dual American Academy of Sleep Medicine 

accreditation of two sites from the 2010

Elucidation of the Risk of Sleep Apnea in Atrial Fibrillation 

Relationships of sleep disordered breathing (SDB) and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) 

will be investigated to fill in the following existing gaps: clarify the extent to which the 

length of respiratory events, apnea subtype (obstructive versus central), and hypoxia 

serve as triggers of AF; examine effects of SDB-related autonomic modulation in AF 

provocation; identify the extent to which cardiac morphology and pathways of 

inflammation modulate the SDB-AF relationship. This information, collected in a group 

of individuals with AF who are at high risk for complications including stroke, heart 

failure and death, is key for developing new strategies to reduce the morbidity and 

mortality of these conditions.

Title: Phase II Trial of Sleep Apnea Treatment to Reduce Cardiovascular Morbidity 

9/30/09-8/31/11 

The study aims to evaluate the utility of a novel application of nocturnal supplemental 

oxygen in treating patients at high risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) events with 

sleep apnea. This will identify which pathophysiological pathways may be improved by 

blunting the physiological stress of intermittent hypoxemia compared to improving 

airway patency. The study will lay the ground work for a definitive Phase 3 study that 

will address the role of sleep apnea interventions in CVD risk reduction.

breathing; 2.) alcohol use and nocturnal cardiac arrhythmias; and 3.) the 

association of synergistic effects of alcohol use and sleep-disordered breathing with 

nocturnal cardiac arrhythmias compared to either exposure alone.
