Report Cards: On November 19th, your child will bring home his/her first
quarter report card. The report card is used as a tool to share with students
and parents the progress, accomplishments, strengths and areas of weakness
that have occurred during the first nine weeks of school. When reviewing your
child’s report card, remember the following:
• Don’t be surprised. Talk to your child about his/her progress and areas
that may need improvement.
• Talk to your child. Stay calm and discuss each subject individually. Ask
them what they can do to improve next quarter.
• Focus on the future. Report cards reflect what has already happened.
The past can’t be changed.
• Develop a plan. Sit down with your child and discuss what your child can
do to improve his/her grades. Consider asking the teacher for input.

Attendance Information: Our school wide attendance for October was
96.4%. Yippee… our students and staff will celebrate this accomplishment by
participating in Pajama Day on Friday, November 16, 2012. As part of our
school improvement plan, we are also providing monthly celebrations for
students with perfect attendance. For the month of October, we celebrated
with 35-3 rd Graders, 49-4 th Graders and 48-5 th graders.
Cold Weather Guidelines: It is difficult to set guidelines that fit every
circumstance and condition with regards to outside activities during cold
weather. Principals are advised to use their discretion and good judgment as
to whether or not students will go outside, as well as the duration of the
outside activity. Principals may opt for a shorter recess period in cold
temperatures or specify a temperature of above 20 degrees as the cut off
point for going out. Elementary students should not go outdoors for recess or
physical education whenever the temperature falls below 20 degrees, including
the wind chill factor. Please note the guidelines for Thurmont Elementary
School: If the temperature outside is between 20-32 degrees each team will
make a decision regarding outdoor recess. If the temperature is above 32
degrees students will be expected to go outdoors, so please make sure your
child has appropriate winter attire during the winter months.
Picture Retakes: Picture retakes will be held on Tuesday, November 20th. If
your child was absent on the original picture day, an order form was sent home
with your child. If your package was defective in some way and you desire a
retake of the original package, please return the entire package with your
child noting your concern and reason for retake on the envelope. If you have
any questions regarding picture packages please call Larry Allen 1-800-447-
1728.
