International Organization for Migration
IOM is committed to the principle that humane and orderly
migration benefits migrants and society. As the leading
international organization dealing with migration and related
issues, IOM acts with its partners in the international community
to assist in meeting the growing operational challenges of
migration management, advance understanding of migration
issues, encourage social and economic development through
migration, and uphold the human dignity and well-being of
migrants.
Pursuant to Art. 1.1(e) of the IOM Constitution, the purposes
and functions of the organization are to provide a forum for states
as well as international and other organizations for the exchange
of views and experiences, and the promotion of cooperation and
coordination of efforts on international migration issues,
including studies on such issues in order to develop practical
solutions.
The International Dialogue on Migration was launched at the
IOM Council in November 2001 to provide a forum for IOM’s
105 Member States and Observer States and organizations to
identify and discuss key issues and challenges in the field of
international migration, with a view to enhancing understanding
of and cooperation in migration. This seminar was one of the
international workshops held within the framework of the
International Dialogue on Migration.
