ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT & SPORTING EXCELLENCE TECHNICAL DIRECTOR OF FOOTBALL - ARTHUR PAPAS Quote from Arthur Papas, Technical Director Football Program MSA – the day after hearing the Bill Turner Cup news: (Arthur is currently in India coaching their National U/23 squad) …A little email to congratulate and thank-you all for the role you have played over the course of a few years regarding the Maribyrnong Sports Academy and in particular the Football program, culminating in yesterday's achievement which now sees Maribyrnong Sports Academy crowned the 2012 Bill Turner Cup Champions. When the decision was made to enter this group into the tournament it was based on being the first 'genuine' group that had gone through a thorough Talent ID program which subsequently has been developed for three years through the school. I can still recall those freezing Saturday mornings at Monmia Primary School when we had over 80 primary school student trialling. I'm sure Marty and Rob can remember this as well but from that Academy Program the majority of this group was brought into the school. The level of development that has occurred to further the likes of Jayden Anderson who captained the team this week and Joseph Monek is a credit to the Sports Academy and its staff. Players such as these were our 'L-plates' group back in Year 7, not even able to yet train with the main group because their technical ability was considered behind for this age level. However, we persevered with these boys and others because they showed and continue to show a real desire to learn and with the right environment around them are achieving great things both on and off the field! Yesterday was an achievement that even I thought was possibly still a couple years away. To have won a tournament that comprises the elite of the elite when it comes to Sports Schools across the country, and to be the first ever Victorian school to win the Bill Turner Cup is a remarkable story and a testament to the quality of the program, staff involved both technically and administratively for the program and most importantly the student-athletes we have brought into the program! MARIBYRNONG COLLEGE WINS THE BILL TURNER CUP The Bill Turner Cup is a thirty four year old schools competition specifically for U/15 Boys Football (Soccer) teams and it has become a highly sought after prize with a proud tradition. Originally set up to cater for schools in Northern NSW, the prestigious competition now draws schools from all over Australia. The Cup is named after Bill Turner, a former international Football referee and long serving teacher from Lake Macquarie High School. The competition has traditionally been won by the large sports schools of NSW and Qld including Westfields Sports High Sydney (6 times), John Paul College Brisbane (twice) The Hills Sports High Sydney, Illawarra Sports High and Hunter Sports High (once each). Maribyrnong College entered the competition for the first time this year and made it to the final four teams which were then invited to Newcastle NSW to contest the semi-finals and final. Along the way, we were able to defeat St Albans College Victoria (9-0), Bendigo SE College (6-0), Daramalan College ACT (6-0), Marian College Griffith NSW (6-2) and St John’s Dubbo NSW (2/4 – 2/1). The tournament started with a civic reception where all teams were welcomed to the City of Lake Macquarie at a mayoral function. In the first semi-final at Jack McLaughlan Field (Edgewater NSW), Maribyrnong were able to defeat John Paul College Qld 3-1 with goals to Damian Rastocic (2) and Ardian Vuniqui (1). In the other semifinal, The Hills Sports High were able to defeat traditional rival Westfields Sports High 3-0. This set up the Grand Final showdown between Maribyrnong and The Hills. After a tense start where The Hills missed two early chances, Maribyrnong were able to slot two goals in the last few minutes of the first half to Ardian Vuniqui and James Xydias. Continuing strongly in the second half, goals to Monek and Rastocic put the result beyond doubt with a resounding 4-0 wins. This is only the second time a Victorian team has ever reached a Final of the Bill Turner Cup with Notre Dame College Shepparton losing the 2000 final to Epping Boys. It is certainly the first time the Cup has ventured south of the Murray so Maribyrnong College has claimed a unique part of the event’s history. To top off a great campaign, Damian Rastocic was named Player of the Final and Ardian Vuniqui won Player of the Tournament. Congratulations go to all other players including: Rory Brian, Aaron Caldwell, Joseph Monek, Adem Or, Bryson Ng, Dillan Djohan, Ryan Dragovic, Stelios Tzanoudakis, Edwin Stangherlin, Juan Igic, Jayden Anderson (Capt), Mendi Barjaktarevic, Djordje Aleksic, James Xydias, Tomislav Fadljevic, Isaac Botros. Congratulations also go to Coach Ralph Napoli, Managers Amy Jackson and Marty Cusack. A special mention must also be made of the contribution of Arthur Papas and Aaron Symons (both currently coaching in India) who played a significant role in recruiting and developing the boys. Many parents flew up for the final and were able to join Nick Scott (Principal), Rob Carroll (Sport Director) and Nino Napoli (Department of Education) who flew to Newcastle to support the team.
