MU ALPHA THETA - The next Mu Alpha Theta meeting will be held on April 8 at 5:15 in the LGI. Officer elections will be held and senior scholarship applications will be available. Students who haven't earned their rummage sale points and wish to letter and remain a member may turn in their monetary donation equivalent to room 335. The relay contest will be held on April 15--students may sign up with their math teacher by April 8 or at the meeting. WINTER GUARD NEWS - Congratulations to the TWHS Winter Guard on a great season! The Winter Guard finished their season placing 4th at their state championships this past weekend out of 40 groups. The winter guard also placed 3rd in two national regionals this year. Congratulations to seniors Kelly Ayers, Danny Durio, Samantha Hopkins, Hannah Hurt, and Lindsay Royall on a great 8 seasons! POWERLIFTING UPDATE - Three Highlander Powerlifters competed in the THSPA State Championships held in Abilene on Saturday, March 28. Zach Hohman became the 2 nd lifter in school history to medal at the state meet, placing 2 nd in the 165 lb class. He broke the state record (previously 600 lbs) with a 630 lb squat. He also broke school records in the bench (355 lbs), dead lift (485 lbs) and total weight (1470 lbs). Colin Renton became the first two-time state qualifier in school history. He broke school records in the dead lift (590 lbs) and total weight (1500 lbs) in the 220 lbs class. Colin placed 10 th at the meet. Matt Lee became the first sophomore in school history to qualify for the state meet. He broke a school record with a 300 lb squat and placed 15 th at the meet in the 114 lb class. The team competed in at the Region IV Championships on March 7 held at Mayde Creek High School. As a team, The Woodlands set school records with 6 lifters, 13 points and 3 state qualifiers. Zach Hohman began the day by breaking a 6-year-old regional record in the 165 lb class with a 605 lb squat. He followed that with school records in the bench (335 lbs) and total weight (1390 lbs) to claim the regional championship. Zach becomes only the second lifter in school history to win a regional title and earned an invitation to the State Championships in Abilene on March 28. Matt Lee qualified for the state meet by placing second in the 114 lb class. He set school records in the squat (295 lbs), dead lift (330 lbs) and total weight (775 lbs). Colin Renton becomes the school’s first two-time state qualifier by reaching the automatic qualifying total of 1450 lbs (a school record) in the 220 lb class. He placed 5 th at the regional meet. Ryan Sweat set new school records in the 123 lb class with a 290 lb squat and a 765 lb total. He placed 9 th at the meet. Freshman Caffery Penn became the third freshman in school history to compete in a regional meet. He placed 7 th in the 114 lbs class. Brad Roberge qualified for regionals in the 242 lb class and placed 6 th at the meet. Entering the regional meet, 9 Highlander lifters finished the regular season ranked in the top 20 in the region: Matt Lee (114 lb, 4 th ), Caffery Penn (114 lb, 8 th ), Ryan Sweat (123 lb, 10 th ), Scott Lenhart (132 lb, 17 th ), Nathan Gillmore (132 lb, 20 th ), Zach Hohman (165 lb, 2 nd ), Colin Renton (220 lb, 3 rd ), Brad Roberge (242 lb, 6 th ), and Adam Sibal (SHW, 13 th ). On February 28, the powerlifting team competed in Navasota. Caffery Penn placed 3 rd in the 114 lb class. Ryan Sweat placed 5 th in the 123 lb class. Adam Sibal placed 4 th in the super heavyweight division. GOLF - The Highlander boys went to the College Park JV Invitational on March 23 at River Plantation and came home with second, third, and fourth places, including second-place medalist honors for Alex Myers. The Highlander A Team came in second place, led by Alex Myers score of 72 and secondmedalist honors. Also contributing were Taylor Caldwell’s 77, Chris Reina’s 79, Ricky Causey’s 80, and Zach Bridges’ 80. Their team total was 308. The C Team came in third place, led by Kyle Southard’s and Derek Meehan’s scores of 73. Cameron Carruthers’ contributed a 78, and Joey Kissinger added an 85. The C Team total was 309, one shot beyond the A Team. The Highlander B Team finished in fourth place. Nick Irpino led the way with a 77, followed by Robert Talbot’s and Patrick Hollinger’s 79s, Billy Furay’s 82, and Nitin Adoni’s 83. The B Team total was 317. Congratulations boys!
Five of the freshmen Highlander golfers went to the Westfield High School’s Freshman Invitational at World Houston Golf Course on March 25 th and came home with a 5 th place finish. Leading the way for the Highlanders was Stewart Park with a score of 89. Also contributing was Garrett Neville (97), Matt McCormick (98), and Matt Shearon and Robert Leonard (both at 108). Their team total was 392. Congratulations boys! The TWH Highlanders went to Raven Nest and Waterwood National Golf Courses on March 27-28 and came home with the championship trophy and the individual medalist golfer. The Highlander A Team was led by medalist winner Ryan Kelley. Ryan shot rounds of 71-72 for a 143 total. Other members of the championship team were Marcos Martinez, the 3 rd -place medalist, who shot rounds of 72-74 (146), Ryan Howard (71-80=151), Ryan Eibner (75-77=152), and Philip Colwell (78-74=152). Their winning total was 586 (289-297). The Highlander B Team finished in 4 th place, led by Shehzad Hafiz’s 155 (78-77). Other contributors were Ben Glover’s 156 (77-79), Kevin Foley’s 157 (78-79), Chris Dorosh’s 159 (77-82), and David Miles’ 163 (76-87). The B Team total was 625 (308-317). Although rain cancelled the first day of competition, the Highlander Boys were able to compete in the Bryan Invitational on Friday and Saturday, March 27-28, at Briarcrest Country Club. Leading the way for the Highlander A Team was Michael Johnson (86), followed by Michael Warren and Taylor Miller at 87, Mike Durio (88), and Adam Colwell (91). The A Team finished in 3 rd place with a team total of 348. The Highlander B Team finished in 5 th place with a team total of 362. Leading the way for the B Team was Charlie Raiford (89), followed by Andrew Ertel and Kevin Wang at 90, and Ryan Srnka (91). The Highlander Girls went to Bryan’s Briarcrest Country on Friday and Saturday, March 27-28, to compete in the Bryan Invitational – although rain cancelled the first day of competition. The Highlander A Team came in fourth place, led by Vanessa Adarme’s and Laken Trahan’s scores of 83, followed by Taylor Kilponen’s 86, Marisa Cones’ 89, and Abbie Dirggers’ 90. Their team total was 341. The B Team finished in 6 th place with a team total of 368. Morgan Lindsey led the way with a score of 88, followed by Nicole Budnik (91), Katie Kilponen (93), Colleen Fal (96), and Diana Wohl (98). HIGHLANDER SOCCER - The JV Highlanders soccer team played College Park Cavaliers at Weldon Willig stadium on Feb 24. This was a riveting game, with the Cavaliers dominating the first half and taking an early lead. In the closing seconds of the game, Freshman Santiago Navas, lofted the ball from the 18 yard line to Junior Manny Singh, unmarked and near the six yard area, who slotted the ball home to tie the game 1-1. On Feb 27, the JV Highlanders played Oak Ridge romping to a 4-0 victory. The JV Highlander’s team then beat Conroe 3-0 on March 6, and ended the season with a 5-0 victory over Lufkin. The Highlanders varsity soccer team hosted local rival College Park Cavaliers at Weldon Willig stadium Feb. 24. With the district lead at stake the home team sought to share the lead, while the visitors aimed to deny the adversaries, and go ahead further. Halfway through the first session, Highlander goalkeeper Keaton Laden stepped back six yards to take a free kick from the center circle. His kick sent the ball down towards the penalty spot where the ball bounced over the last Cavalier defender, around whom Sophomore Connor Mowery ran and headed the rising ball diagonally into the top left corner of the goal, giving the Highlanders a 1-0 victory. The Highlanders varsity soccer team then played Oak Ridge War Eagles on Feb 27 at Weldon Willig stadium and won 3-0. All three goals came in the first half, with two goals scored by Senior Diego Corona, and a solo effort by Junior Thomas Zernell. The Highlanders varsity soccer team met the Conroe Tigers on March 6. This was an excellent game, played with energy by both teams, and which ultimately went into extra time. In the second session of
