Five of the freshmen <strong>High</strong>lander golfers went to the Westfield <strong>High</strong> School’s Freshman Invitational at<br />

World Houston Golf Course on March 25 th and came home with a 5 th place finish. Leading the way for<br />

the <strong>High</strong>landers was Stewart Park with a score of 89. Also contributing was Garrett Neville (97), Matt<br />

McCormick (98), and Matt Shearon and Robert Leonard (both at 108). Their team total was 392.<br />

Congratulations boys!<br />

The TWH <strong>High</strong>landers went to Raven Nest and Waterwood National Golf Courses on March 27-28 and<br />

came home with the championship trophy and the individual medalist golfer. The <strong>High</strong>lander A Team<br />

was led by medalist winner Ryan Kelley. Ryan shot rounds of 71-72 for a 143 total. Other members of<br />

the championship team were Marcos Martinez, the 3 rd -place medalist, who shot rounds of 72-74 (146),<br />

Ryan Howard (71-80=151), Ryan Eibner (75-77=152), and Philip Colwell (78-74=152). Their<br />

winning total was 586 (289-297). The <strong>High</strong>lander B Team finished in 4 th place, led by Shehzad Hafiz’s<br />

155 (78-77). Other contributors were Ben Glover’s 156 (77-79), Kevin Foley’s 157 (78-79), Chris<br />

Dorosh’s 159 (77-82), and David Miles’ 163 (76-87). The B Team total was 625 (308-317).<br />

Although rain cancelled the first day of competition, the <strong>High</strong>lander Boys were able to compete in the<br />

Bryan Invitational on Friday and Saturday, March 27-28, at Briarcrest Country Club. Leading the way<br />

for the <strong>High</strong>lander A Team was Michael Johnson (86), followed by Michael Warren and Taylor<br />

Miller at 87, Mike Durio (88), and Adam Colwell (91). The A Team finished in 3 rd place with a team<br />

total of 348. The <strong>High</strong>lander B Team finished in 5 th place with a team total of 362. Leading the way for<br />

the B Team was Charlie Raiford (89), followed by Andrew Ertel and Kevin Wang at 90, and Ryan<br />

Srnka (91).<br />

The <strong>High</strong>lander Girls went to Bryan’s Briarcrest Country on Friday and Saturday, March 27-28, to<br />

compete in the Bryan Invitational – although rain cancelled the first day of competition. The <strong>High</strong>lander<br />

A Team came in fourth place, led by Vanessa Adarme’s and Laken Trahan’s scores of 83, followed by<br />

Taylor Kilponen’s 86, Marisa Cones’ 89, and Abbie Dirggers’ 90. Their team total was 341. The B<br />

Team finished in 6 th place with a team total of 368. Morgan Lindsey led the way with a score of 88,<br />

followed by Nicole Budnik (91), Katie Kilponen (93), Colleen Fal (96), and Diana Wohl (98).<br />

HIGHLANDER SOCCER - The JV <strong>High</strong>landers soccer team played College Park Cavaliers at Weldon<br />

Willig stadium on Feb 24. This was a riveting game, with the Cavaliers dominating the first half and<br />

taking an early lead. In the closing seconds of the game, Freshman Santiago Navas, lofted the ball from<br />

the 18 yard line to Junior Manny Singh, unmarked and near the six yard area, who slotted the ball home<br />

to tie the game 1-1. On Feb 27, the JV <strong>High</strong>landers played Oak Ridge romping to a 4-0 victory. The JV<br />

<strong>High</strong>lander’s team then beat Conroe 3-0 on March 6, and ended the season with a 5-0 victory over<br />

Lufkin.<br />

The <strong>High</strong>landers varsity soccer team hosted local rival College Park Cavaliers at Weldon Willig stadium<br />

Feb. 24. With the district lead at stake the home team sought to share the lead, while the visitors aimed<br />

to deny the adversaries, and go ahead further. Halfway through the first session, <strong>High</strong>lander goalkeeper<br />

Keaton Laden stepped back six yards to take a free kick from the center circle. His kick sent the ball<br />

down towards the penalty spot where the ball bounced over the last Cavalier defender, around whom<br />

Sophomore Connor Mowery ran and headed the rising ball diagonally into the top left corner of the goal,<br />

giving the <strong>High</strong>landers a 1-0 victory.<br />

The <strong>High</strong>landers varsity soccer team then played Oak Ridge War Eagles on Feb 27 at Weldon Willig<br />

stadium and won 3-0. All three goals came in the first half, with two goals scored by Senior Diego<br />

Corona, and a solo effort by Junior Thomas Zernell.<br />

The <strong>High</strong>landers varsity soccer team met the Conroe Tigers on March 6. This was an excellent game,<br />

played with energy by both teams, and which ultimately went into extra time. In the second session of
