BOWLING - Girls Varsity Bowling has finished a truly successful year with our team placing 27th in the state overall and our individual bowler, Charlena Melnyk, placing in the top 16. This is quite an accomplishment as five of our bowlers were complete novices in October and had to be taught how to approach the line and release the ball properly! Maureen Surkein, Adriana Trevino, Hillary Englehardt, Madeline Smith, Hannah Skinner, and Charlena Melnyk are true champions for their determination to never quit no matter what the odds are. A big debt of gratitude is also owed to Mrs. Jan Melnyk for all of her hard work and effort coaching and teaching these young ladies. We are proud of all of you! JROTC -The Air Force JROTC Drill Team competed in the Nationals Drill Meet (Western Division), this past weekend. With 20 teams in attendance, the Unarmed Team placed 5th in Inspection and the Armed Team placed 4th in Regulation Drill. Cadet Colonel Andrew Hanna placed first in the Armed Knockout category. This meet brings together the highest level of competitive teams from the Western part of the United States, and our team represented us very well at this meet! Congratulations! PTA STAFF APPRECIATION NEWS - Special thanks for the door prize donated by Rosanne Dolton and family during our February luncheon! Also, thanks to Karen Terry and her family for donating King Cakes. Check out our website at www.OPERATIONGRADUATIONonline.com HEALTH NEWS FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE: Part Two Body Piercing – A Guide for Teens Resources: Center for Young Women’s Health (Children’s Hospital Boston, March 2009), Michele Van Vranken, MD (Nemours Foundation, November 2008),Timothy Roberts, MD (Pediatrician at University of Rochester Medical Center, April 2006) Review of Potential Risks with Body Piercing Bacterial infection (where you had the piercing) Abscesses or boils (collections of pus that can form under your skin at the site of the piercing) Chronic Infection Excessive (a lot of), uncontrollable or prolonged bleeding Allergic reactions (especially to certain kinds of jewelry) Damage to nerves (for example, you may lose feeling at the area that gets pierced) Keloids (thick scarring at the piercing site) Dental damage (swelling and infection of tongue, chipped and broken teeth, choking on loose jewelry) Hepatitis B and C Tetanus Did you know that...? You CAN get and/or spread a serious infection including HIV, if the piercing equipment hasn't been sterilized properly. Infections caused by bacteria getting into the puncture of the piercing may also happen later, even after the piercing has healed. If the studio uses a piercing "gun" to do body piercing, LEAVE!! Piercing guns cannot be sterilized and should NOT be used for body piercing. What should you look for in a piercing salon? When you go into a salon, look around. Is the place clean? The shop should be kept clean and sanitary. The lighting should be good so the piercers can see well while working. Do they wash their hands and use sterile gloves and instruments? All the instruments should either be brand new and disposable (meant to be thrown away after one use) or be sterilized in pouches. If the piercer uses disposable needles, you should see him/her open sealed packages of the needles! The piercers should throw away the needles in a biohazard container after using them. What kind of jewelry should be used? Implant grade stainless steel jewelry is generally reasonably priced and safe to use for new piercings. Both 316L and 316LVM types of stainless steel meet the standards for "implant grade" that has been approved by the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM), an organization that is not related to the government but sets high standards for all kinds of materials that are manufactured in the U.S. The European organization that is similar to the ASTM is called the "ISO." Implant grade stainless steel is least likely to produce a foreign body reaction or infection in the skin. Other choices for new piercings are metals such as gold (AT LEAST 18 karat), titanium, or niobium. All of these cost more than implant grade stainless steel but are safe.
