STATEMENT
Thank you for the honor of asking me to run as LAUC-LA Chair-Elect. Librarians now, as in the
past, are in a state of constant change and transition. Transformation is a constant regarding our roles
as information professionals and instructors. It is my intent to represent my peers in a positive light,
yet present their problems, changing roles, and any concerns they may have to the LAUC board.
Since I have served LAUC in various capacities, I believe I would be able to make a difference by
serving LAUC in this capacity and I look forward to the opportunity.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
The current economic challenges in California provide an opportunity for change within LAUC-LA
and the UCLA Libraries. If elected, I would serve the LAUC-LA membership by proactively
fulfilling LAUC-LA’s primary objectives as stated in Sections 1 and 2 of our Bylaws–that of
advising the Office of the Chancellor and the Library Administration on “the operations and
policies of the UCLA libraries”, and “the planning, evaluation, and implementation of programs,
services, or technological changes for the improvement of services and collections in the UCLA
libraries.”
We can no longer wait to be consulted post facto on important matters. Too much is now at
stake; as an official unit of the university LAUC-LA has both an obligation and aresponsibility to
actively advise the Office of the Chancellor and the Library Administra-tion when decisions are
being made that fundamentally determine the role of the library and librarians on our campus.
As Chair of LAUC-LA, I would again refer to the duties outlined in our Bylaws and solicit and
promote the ideas, abilities and skills of librarians to advance the effective use of our collections
and library services. It would be a great honor to have the opportunity to serve LAUC-LA
members in this capacity.

CANDIDATE STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:
I am deeply honored to have been asked by the LAUC-LA Nominating Committee to run for CAPA
Chair; ―just being nominated‖ does indeed represent one of the highest forms of recognition one’s LAUC-
LA colleagues can bestow. From the start of my UCLA career nearly 12 years ago, I have been privileged

to participate in both LAUC-LA and Statewide LAUC in a wide range of elective and appointed
positions. I am especially honored to have served as Chair of LAUC-LA, and to have represented our
division for two separate terms on the Statewide Research and Professional Development Committee.
Having served in the not-too-distant past as one of the last LAUC-LA Peer Review Coordinators, I
believe I can bring a depth of knowledge, experience, and enthusiastic commitment to the office of CAPA
Chair that will enable and inspire me, in the profoundly quotable words of inaugural CAPA Chair and
current LAUC-LA Chair Keri Botello, ―to do my utmost to preserve the integrity, fairness, and
confidentiality‖ of the peer review process that shapes and guides our service to the UCLA community

My entire professional career as a librarian thus far has unfolded while holding my current
position at the American Indian Studies Center Library. Over a period of years I have chosen to
volunteer to serve the needs of LAUC-LA in particular ways that seem suited to my abilities. From time
to time I have been fortunate to be selected to serve the membership, which has included a full term as a
member of CAPA. I think I possess a reasonable understanding of the ways the peer review process

actually works, the workings of CAPA, and the responsibilities I am willing to accept. If I am selected

As a newer librarian, UCLA and LAUC-LA have created opportunities for me to meet and work with

concerns about professional responsibilities, work-life balance, and recognition for our

I would be greatly honored to have the opportunity to represent LAUC-LA as its Representative at
Large. As Representative, my goal would be to foster and improve communication between UCLA and
the greater UC Library community. I believe that together we can make a difference in the many issues
that face UC Librarians in these uncertain times, but the key to our success will be the ongoing healthy

STATEMENT:
I think that my interests reflect those of many librarians at UCLA: of special concern are professional
development funding and the peer review process. For such an active group of librarians living in one of
the most expensive metropolitan areas of North America, professional funding needs are keenly felt.
Also, I welcome the opportunity to be actively involved in the group responsible for our peer review and
our many other professional concerns.
