NIH Seminar by Edwin Becker
On May 24, 2005, Edwin Becker, Ph.D., Scientist
Emeritus of the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestion,
and Kidney Diseases, presented a seminar entitled
“Spins, Magnets and Chemicals: The Evolution of Nuclear
Magnetic Resonance and MRI” at the National
Institutes of Health (NIH) Natcher Conference Center.
This seminar accompanied a new exhibit from the NIH
Stetten Museum of a Varian A-60 NMR spectrophotometer,
an instrument which provided a crucial early
step in NMR research at the NIH. The exhibit explains
how the NMR functions by tracing the energy that
nuclei release when they flip within a magnetic field,
each atom producing an identifiable spectral distribution.
The exhibit also explores the development of two
offshoots of NMR, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging),
and the study of large proteins in addition to small
molecules. The exhibit is located in the lobby outside
the cafeteria of the Natcher Building.
This presentation was sponsored by the NIH Biomedical
Research History Interest Group (BRHIG). For
