pump Fed system setup 

System is installed above ground, therefore it is 

also above the water level of the pond. The dirty 

pond water is pumped out of the pond or out of 

the levelled pump chamber and into the filter 

system. The filtered water can then flow back to 

the pond via an inclined pipeline, water course, 

or waterfall. There should be no height difference 

between filter outlet and origin of the water 

course or waterfall, i.e. in a pump fed system 

the water course cannot be higher than the 

outlet of the filter modules. The water must flow 

out by gravity. 

graVIty Fed system setup 

Dirty pond water reaches the first filter module 

via the bottom drain or a liner transition. 

Because the debris is fed into the coarse debris 

separator w/o being pumped, effective removal 

of suspended matter is ensured. The pump is in 

the pump chamber at the end of the system and 

pumps the filtered water back into the pond, 

usually via a waterfall or water course.

there are multiple uses for ultraviolet lights in a pond application. uV’s in the 

water gardening/koi keeping hobby are either used as a clarifier or as a sterilizer. 

the biggest difference is the amount of watts in comparison to the dwell time 

(which is directly related to the flow rate). 

UVs in general are easily broken down by the wattage of the bulb. More specifically 

uVs are based on a micro watt second/cubic centimeter.

usIng uVcs as a clarIFIer 

As a clarifier, UVs can directly damage organisms cell wall and/or DNA structure & allow for easier 

collection. In the case of water gardening, single cell algae’s damaged cell wall allows each 

cell to stick to another. This process allows numerous single cell algae to clump together (flocculate) 

which can then be caught in filter media. UVs can only affect what is directly exposed to the 

light & therefore hold no residual effects “downstream”. what this means is algae such as string 

algae cannot be eradicated from uV treatment alone.

On many brands of UVs you will notice a max flow for clarifier & max flow for sterilizer. Passing

Algae Defense works on a broad spectrum of algae. Apply in spring 

when water temps reach 60ºF +. early applications will reduce amount 

of Algae Defense needed and reduce amount of excess nutrients 

caused by dead algae. Multiple applications may be needed for full 

season of control.

Safe, rapid-acting contact herbicide designed for many species of 

aquatic vegetation. Best w/mature aquatic weeds. Treated weeds 

generally drop below surface in as little as 4-7 days. Areas that are 

heavily infested may require second application in 10-12 weeks. Use 

w/Algae Defense for faster results & algae control.

Leaves thin and wavy and finely serrated at the 

edges. Stems branched. Upper leaves are often 

crispy and appear waxy. Leaves alternately on 

stem. Flowers born on spikes rise above the water 

surface. 

eurasIan watermIlFoIl 

Leaves in whorls of 4 w/ as many as 20 pairs of leaf 

divisions. Reddish flower may be on water’s surface. 

Plants reach lengths of 10’ or more. Exotic plant, 

rapidly becoming an aquatic nuisance in N. America. 

Spreads quickly/grows by fragmentation. 

algae 

Filamentous algae has thread like appearance. Often 

referred to as pond scum or moss. Forms surface 

mats. Growth begins at bottom, rises to surface as 

bubble filled mass. May also form fur-like growths on 

logs and rocks at the bottom. Planktonic algae is visible 

as greenish tinge, suspended in the upper few feet 

of water. Commonly referred to as “pea soup”, may 

actually thicken water during severe blooms. 

cHara 

Leaf-like structures whorled around a hollow stem. 

Dense growth attached, but not rooted to the bottom. 

May “carpet” large areas of the pond’s bottom. Strong 

musky odor when crushed. May have a gritty texture 

due to mineral deposits. Do not confuse with other 

pond weeds. 

HydrIlla/elodea 

These two weeds are very similar. Both leaves are 

whorled in groups. Whorls of leaves are compact 

near growing tips. Spacing between whorls 

increases further down the stem. Hydrilla leaves 

have a serrated edge. 

amerIcan pondweed 

The floating leaves are oval. Submerged leaves 

are not abundant and are blade-like. Fruits are on 

spikes that often stand above the water’s surface 

and are brownish to reddish 3 to 21 inches long 

and 1/8 to 1/4 inches wide. 

duckweed 

Leaves size of pencil eraser. Individually or in 

clusters. Small root hairs may be seen hanging from 

underside. No distinguishable stem. Heavy growth 

will blanket surface. Duckweed isn’t interconnected 

as is filamentous algae. Do not confuse with algae. 

naIad 

Leaves are wider at the base and arranged oppositely 

or in whorls of three on the plant stem. Often 

grows in thick clumps or beds. Good coverage 

and dispersion of chemical is required to achieve 

control. 

coontaIl 

Leaves whorled around the stem and have a serrated 

appearance. Spacing between leaf whorls is 

variable. Consequently, the end of the stem leaves 

and whorls are crowded. Branches are forked 

repeatedly. Do not confuse with Chara.

Forms of payment accepted by Water Landscape Supply are: cash, 

certified check, C.O.D. and credit card. Customers who qualify for Net 

30 Days Credit Accounts must maintain current payment status or all 

discounts will be nullified and future shipments will be shipped C.O.D. 

only. C.O.D. orders include a $10. Water Landscape Supply fee in 

addition to the C.O.D. fee charged by the freight firm. Payment of 

C.O.D. orders must be made by certified check or cashier check.

DAMAGe IN TRANSIT 

Upon receipt of goods, the customer must inspect for damage and 

add the phrase “not for hidden damages” when signing the receipt 

for goods. If damage is discovered, the customer must initiate a 

claim with the shipper. 

ReSToCkING Fee 

A 15% restocking fee will be charged for all salable returned items. 

ReTURN PoLICy 

Returns will only be accepted if identified with a legitimate Return Authorization 

(RA) number prior to returning product. To receive an RA 

number, customers must call a Water Landscape Supply representative 

to explain the nature of the return. The RA number should appear 

clearly on the outside of each package returned. Credit will be 

issued once the merchandise is received, inspected and authorized. 

The customer is responsible for freight costs incurred for the return to 

Water Landscape Supply. 

WARRANTIeD MeRCHANDISe 

Defective items may be returned to Water Landscape Supply without 

a restocking fee during the warranty period of the merchandise. The 

customer is responsible for returning the items to Water Landscape 

Supply and for freight costs. Each item must be accompanied by 

a copy of original retail receipt from the dealer showing the date 

of purchase. Items will be replaced or repaired at the discretion of 

Water Landscape Supply.
