Parson to Person
I never cease to be amazed at the number of modern day self- appointed “experts,” who continue to come up with all
kinds of explanations or outright denials of The Resurrection of Jesus Christ. We have those who claim that Jesus
had not really been dead in the first place – He had simply “swooned,” and later “woke up!” There are those who
have said that His Crucifixion had been faked – that He was only acting and that, in fact, the Romans soldiers in
charge of His execution had only pretended to nail Him to the Cross. Some say the whole thing was just made up!
There are those who say that He apparently did die, but that His Resurrection was faked, by the Disciples, who stole
His dead body and hid it somewhere else. There are those who say that, although Jesus died on The Cross and was
entombed, what happened later was just a series of hallucinations on the part of the two Marys and the Disciples
who claimed that He was raised from the dead. In explaining the more than five hundred witnesses that testified as
to having seen Him alive – these modern day “scholars” claim that this was a case of mass hysteria due to the trauma
of having learned of His death, and so on and so on. What it all boils down to is simply this, if people don’t want
to believe something – they won’t! The scriptures underscore the teaching that “the just shall live by faith.” When
people demanded “proof” in the time of Christ, He warned them that even if a man were to die and come back from
the dead – people would not believe him. And so, it has happened just as He predicted! He died on the Cross to pay
for our sins and bring us back to God, then He rose from the dead to show that He has authority over sin and death
and thence, the power to forgive sin. People want God to show them the way – He has done just that and they reject
it by trying to explain it away. If you reject His Word and the Truth about His Son, Jesus Christ, you will come to
regret it. I warn you – don’t disbelieve this great wonder that He accomplished. Is was not a difficult thing for Him
to do – but it was a huge thing that He did for us! He died, shedding His blood for the forgiveness of our sins, and
then rose again to seal the deal! Isn’t it amazing that people, who are now living, some two thousand years later,
would have the arrogance and audacity to claim that they know more about an event than the people who were there
and saw it for themselves? The Just shall live by faith, and Jesus said, “Blessed are those who do not see and yet
believe anyway!” Why not be one of those “Blessed” people?
Governor Culver Signs
‘Ed Thomas Bill’
Governor Chet Culver today signed Senate File 2352, mental health notification
legislation known as the “Ed Thomas Bill,” into law during a ceremony
at the Iowa Hall of Pride. Governor Culver paid special tribute to Ed
Thomas, the Aplington-Parkersburg High School football coach who was
killed last year. Members of the Thomas family stood with the Governor at
the ceremony.
“By any measure, Coach Thomas was a remarkable man,” Governor Culver
said. “Words can’t truly explain the impact he had on his community and
the people he loved. I was privileged to witness Coach Thomas’s leadership
during the aftermath of the 2008 tornado that devastated Parkersburg. I’m
proud to do my small part to honor Coach Thomas by signing this bill.”
Under the new law, if law enforcement personnel have taken a person into
custody and they believe that the person may injure themselves or others,
the officer will have the resources to require a formal evaluation by mental
health professionals, and possible hospitalization consistent with current law.
Additionally, if there is a warrant pending or plans for an arrest, a Magistrate
can order that law enforcement be notified when the evaluation is complete
and the person is released from the hospital.
“This is common-sense legislation that will help prevent tragedy and get
people the help they need, “Governor Culver said. “It will save lives.”
Building Permit Requirements
The Mayor and City Council would like to remind the citizens of the
building permit requirements:
1. All citizens are required to obtain a permit before erecting a building
or other structure within the City. This includes: homes, garages, fences,
decks, patios and small sheds, regardless of whether it is a permanent
structure or not. An application may be obtained from City Hall or by
going to www.newsharoniowa.com .
2. The application should be filled out and given to the clerk so that it may
be included on the agenda for a regular council meeting. Regular council
meetings are held on the 1st Monday and 3rd Wednesday of each month.
There is a $10 filing fee per application.
3. After the application is approved, a public hearing will be scheduled,
typically for the next regular council meeting.
4. After the public hearing is held, the application may be approved and
construction may begin.
5. This entire process can take approximately 30 days. Please plan
accordingly. If construction begins prior to final approval, a $100 fine
per day will be assessed against the applicant.
By: Cass Moore
What Cheer Weather Spotter
Severe Weather Awareness Weeks
are an opportunity to increase
awareness of and response to severe
weather hazards. Most states also
conduct a tornado drill during their
awareness week. Please mark your
calendar and plan to participate in
the drill for your local area, as this
is an opportunity to test your communication
methods as if it were a
real situation. This is also the time
to know all of the different kinds of
severe weather watches, warnings
and advisories and to also know
your place of shelter. Iowa’s Severe
Weather Awareness week is April
5-9, 2010 and the statewide tornado
drill will be held Wednesday, April
7 at 10am.
An expression of both hope
and judgment
Surely he has born our in-firmities and carried our dis-eases; yet, we accounted
him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted.
But he was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities.
Upon him, was the punishment that made us whole, and by his bruises, we
are healed.
All we, like sheep, have gone astray; we have all turned to our own way,
and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth. Like
a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that is before its shearers
is silent, so he did not open his mouth.
By a perversion of justice, he was taken away. Who could have imagined
his fu-ture? For he was cut off from the land of the living, stricken for the
transgression of my people.
They made his grave with the wicked and his tomb with the rich, although
he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. Yet, it was the
will of the Lord to crush him with pain.
(When you make his life an offering for sin, he shall see his offspring, and
shall prolong his days.)
Through him, the will of the Lord shall prosper. Out of his anguish, he shall
see light; he shall find satisfaction through his knowledge.
“The righteous one, my servant, shall make many righteous, and he shall
bear their iniquities. Therefore, I will allot him a portion with the great, and
he shall divide the spoil with the strong; be-cause he poured out himself to
death, and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many,
and made intercession for the transgressors.” Isaiah 53:4-12
By Sue Hicks
The book of Isaiah is one of judgment and hope. It looks forward to a time
when every thing will be put right, including our hearts: “Why, O Lord, do
you make us stray from our ways and harden our heart, so that we do not fear
you?” moans the prophet in the 17th verse of chapter 63.
Yes, Isaiah considered their state God’s doing. But he also saw that the
Lord was the only one who could pro-vide a remedy that would be both temporal
and spiritual. Men can change the temporal. Only God can change the
spiritual. Isaiah prophesies much about both these as-pects, and they come
together in one word: salvation.
We often think of salva-tion as purely spiritual, but it was not so to the
Hebrew mind. In the dictionary por-tion of my concordance, sal-vation in
Hebrew is described as deliverance, health, help and welfare.
The root, yasha, to save, means to be open, wide or free, being brought into
a safe, broad place, where there is freedom from all our har-assing enemies.
And, just as we are told in the new testa-ment, salvation in Hebrew is pronounced,
Yesh-oo-aw, the Hebrew way to say, Jesus. Which brings us back to
Isaiah’s “suffering servant,” the title often given to the passage above.
This servant, whose very name means salvation, pours out himself to death
so that we may be saved, so that we may be brought into that place that is
open, wide and free.
The servant does this be-cause it ultimately will cause “the will of the Lord
to pros-per.” That is, to bring us back in line with God’s original intention
when he created each of us individually and all life, collectively. It is his will
that we live as open, wide and free as Adam and Eve in the garden.
Think on today, as we near the commemoration of that day in which the
Lord’s suffering servant was bruised so that we might be healed, what he has
borne for us. And not in a general sense. Think on what he has borne for you.
It is, like the book of Isaiah, an expression of both hope and judgment.
Hope that you may be brought into that place of sal-vation; judgment of
God’s and our enemies: those sins that subvert his perfect will.
Gov. Culver Proclaims April As
Safe Digging Month In Iowa
Iowa One Call and Common Ground Iowa remind local residents to call 811
before all digging projects
Iowa Governor Chet Culver recently issued a proclamation announcing
his support for National Safe Digging Month in April. The proclamation reminds
Iowa homeowners to call 811 before starting any outdoor digging
projects.
April marks the start of spring digging season, so Iowa One Call, Common
Ground Iowa (CGI) and Governor Culver are encouraging homeowners to
call 811 before they dig to prevent injuries and property damage. Failure to
call before digging results in Americans unintentionally hitting underground
utility lines more than 200,000 times annually, which can lead to injury, penalties,
repair costs, and inconvenient outages.
When calling 811, homeowners and excavators are connected to Iowa One
Call, which notifies the appropriate utility companies of the intent to dig.
Professional locators are sent to the requested digging site to mark the locations
of underground lines with flags or spray paint. Once lines have been
marked, digging can begin around marked lines.
“We strongly encourage all individuals and companies in Iowa to comply
with state law, by calling 811 before beginning any projects that will entail
digging,” said Ben Booth, Public Relations/Communications Manager at
Iowa One Call. “By having underground lines marked, casual diggers and
professionals alike can significantly reduce the risk of striking utilities, thus
ultimately avoiding injury and inconvenient outages.”
Striking a single line can cause injury, repair costs, fines and inconvenient
outages. Every digging project, no matter how large or small, necessitates
the free call to 811. Installing a mailbox, putting in a fence, building a deck
and laying a patio are all examples of digging projects that need a call to 811
before starting.
The CGI is a regional partnership of the CGA (Common Ground Alliance).
Interested stakeholders from across the State (including utility operators,
excavators, Iowa One Call and several others), formed this association
to promote “damage prevention through education” utilizing the CGA’s
“Best Practices.”
Visit www.iowaonecall.com, www.call811.com or www.commongroundiowa.com
for more information about 811, educational events/materials,
CGA Best Practices and the call-beforeyou-dig process.
Weekly Trout Stocking
Begins April 1
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources will begin its weekly trout
stocking on April 1. A stocking schedule is available online at www.iowadnr.gov/fish/news/stockrep/trout.html
One of the most essential items in order to get started, other than a fishing
license and trout privilege, is the Iowa Trout Guide. The guide is free and
contains useful information about trout fishing and the trout program as well
as a colored map that shows how to get to each stream. Trout Guides can be
picked up from any of the hatcheries in Manchester, Elkader, or Decorah.
Anglers can also call the stocking information line at 563-927-5736. Additional
information can be obtained by calling the Northeast District Office
at 563-927-5736.
Anglers will need to purchase a trout fee in order to fish for or possess
trout, in addition to having a current fishing license. The daily limit for trout
is five and possession limit is 10.
