Summer
Food
Program
Recognized
By Kathy Street, Fremont School
Correspondent
Earlier this month, Connie Halblom
with Fremont School, received
a letter of congratulations from the
State of Iowa, Department of Education.
Fremont School is considered
a very successful participant in the
Summer Food Service Program.
This program that Fremont
School is able to offer is a result of
a Food and Nutrition program that
the government offers to the school
(it began as a five year program, of
which we just completed our third
summer). In addition, the school applied
for and received a Team Nutrition
Mini-Grant to work with in cooperation
with this for the summer
of 2010.
Over the summer, Connie and
Sharon Miller spent much time
working to provide a wonderful
community service for Fremont.
Between healthy lunches, nutrition
lessons from visiting experts, and
exercise programs brought to students
via Jamie McQuivey (local
mother, nutrition and fitness educator),
students were enlightened on
the care of their bodies. The summer
library program was also available
throughout the weeks, where
children could go from books, computers,
crafts and internet sessions
via the ICN (Iowa Communications
Network). Both bodies and minds
were worked while children were on
their summer break.
In the letter from the Department
of Education, coordinator Carrie
Scheidel writes, “After reviewing
your Team Nutrition mini-grant report
and newspaper clippings it is
obvious that great things are happening
in Fremont Community School
District! Your partnerships with
Hy-Vee and Wapello County Extension
showcase the commitment you
have to provide not only nutritious
meals to the children of Fremont
during the summer, but engaging
nutrition education activities. The
key to a successful Summer Food
Service Program is to be resourceful
and innovative and [you] have
demonstrated both through wellness
programming that was offered this
past summer. We have shared your
success story with USDA to highlight
the efforts of your district. I am
excited to hear you plan to continue
these outstanding partnerships in the
summers to come! I wish you and
your staff the best of luck as you
continue to strive towards a growing
and impactful summer food service
program!”
Skeletal
Remains
Mahaska Co.
Farm Field
Identified
On October 2, 2010, at 6:55 p.m.,
the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office
received a call from a farmer stating
that he had located skeletal remains
in a field near Fremont, Iowa. Deputies
arrived and located what appeared
to be human remains.
The remains have been identified
by the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s
Office as Jacob Allen Reeves
of Fremont, Iowa. Final autopsy
results are still pending. However,
due to the area and the nature of circumstances
where the remains were
found, investigators do not suspect
foul play.
Jacob Reeves was reported missing
to the Mahaska County Sheriff’s
Office in Oskaloosa on October 18,
2008.
This case remains under investigation
by the Mahaska County Sheriff’s
Office with assistance from the
Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation
Tales of the Ancient Sportsman
By Burdell Hensley
What a fabulous week. Yes, I know I am supposed to
slow down a little, but there were so many good things to
be a part of. But I did only go at half speed and it took a
little longer to cover the ground.
Saturday afternoon I left with 40 folks from the
Parkersburg bank and went to Kansas City. Three of
the former Aplington-Parkersburg players were to play
at Arrowhead Stadium Sunday and we were there. We
stayed in Independence Saturday night and then went
over to the Stadium at 9:00 am for tailgating before the
noon game.
We had contracted with Hy Vee for the tailgating
and they provided the tent the food and the works. What
a neat time. I did get plenty of exercise, but I had to walk
slowly. The bus had to park just inside the gate up by the
baseball stadium and the tailgating was at the far south
end of the property beyond the football stadium.
I did get enough to eat, but I had to pass up some
pretty good stuff. After lunch, I decided to go explore
the stadium. The gate we had to enter was at the far west
side. More exercise. Then it was time to climb.
First it was the circular ramps as far as they would
go. Then it was steps and more steps. Our seats were up
where the pigeons live. I’m on blood thinner and I was
afraid I might develop a nose bleed. Once I got up there
my exploring was done and it was time to sit. Actually
it was a neat view from up there with all the color and
pageantry.
The game was a good one for the Parkersburg boys
and they all did well. Casey Wiegmann was the center
for the Chiefs while Brad Meester was the center for
Jacksonville and Aaron Kampman was a defensive end
for the Jaguars. Kampman really had a good game and
probably was the leading tackler.
The Chiefs won 42-20 and poor War Paint, the pony
that gallops across the field after a score, got quite a
workout.
Thursday I drove to Bolivar, MO for a Hensley
family gathering. Cousin Dale was back from Arizona
and I had not seen him for some time. The group met at
Smith’s restaurant in Collins for supper and it was a fun
time. C. A. Smith, the owner of the restaurant is diabetic
also and he features sugar free pies. He had chocolate
and coconut cream this time and that was a hard choice.
I went with the chocolate and it sure was good.
There was plenty of sports excitement in the Bolivar
area this weekend. The Weaubleau-Collins Lady Tigers
were in the final four of the state softball tourney and
the Bolivar Liberators are 8-0 in football. Robbie Hoegh,
former Lynnville-Sully standout, is the basketball coach
for the Liberators.
Early in the week found me at volleyball matches.
Bill’s Barber Shop
. . .
We can’t all be handsome
But we can look neat!
Our People Make T he Difference
Dave Gentry
Chris Gentry
Monday night I took in the Montezuma win over North
Mahaska, Tuesday I was at Pella Christian for the PC
win over Albia and Wednesday I was at Twin Cedars to
see the Sabers top Moravia.
The coming week looks interesting as well as I will
be covering volleyball Monday, Tuesday and Thursday
and football playoffs on Wednesday. I was at Pella
Christian Friday night and the Eagles claimed the district
title with a 54-7 thrashing of Clarke. With PCM upsetting
Bondurant-Farrar, the district standings ended in a
three way tie. By the point system, the Eagles were the
champion.
I must congratulate North Mahaska and Eddyville-
Blakesburg for picking up their first wins in the final
game. North Mahaska beat New London 28-7 and the
Rockets upset West Burlington Notre Dame 32-16 to
knock the Falcons out of the playoff picture and let Albia
in.
The World Series is set with the Texas Rangers
facing the San Francisco Giants. That series is sure to
generate about as much interest as watching a pendulum
swing. Ratings will probably hit an all time low on this
one and I really don’t care who wins. It would do us all
a favor if it went in four games.
What a bummer of a Hawkeye game. It appears that
the massive Wisconsin offensive line won the battle in
the trenches. When Tyler Sash gets 13 tackles that means
the defensive line got whipped. When your strong safety
leads the team in tackles you have a problem.
What a stunner by the Cyclones in Texas. The
messed with Texas and got away with it. Let’s just write
in Paul Rhoads for governor and forget all the political
garbage.
Let’s take a look at our yesterdays.
75 years ago: Oct. 28, 1935- Iowa Wesleyan blanks
Penn 20-0 at homecoming. Charles Weatherwax did a
bang up job in the line for Penn while Grant Rhiner and
Howdy Williams looked good in the backfield. Oct. 31-
New Sharon and Pella tie 13-13. Buck Berry ran for both
New Sharon TD’s while Mennin ran for one Pella score
and passed to Dillon for another.
50 years ago: Oct. 29, 1960- Hedrick blasted Eddyville
46-0 to cap an unbeaten season. Bill Arendt ran
for three TD’s for the Foxes while Ron Vande Pol and
Larry Keifer scored twice.
25 years ago: Oct. 31, 1985- The Lynnville-Sully
Hawks crush Pekin 30-0 in playoff action. Kirby Scull
led the Hawks with 190 yards and a TD. Nov. 2- North
Mahaska falls short in a 20-12 loss to Semco. Mark
Smith scored for NM and Eric Hudson passed to Matt
Readshaw for another TD.
Have a great week and remember to cherish all your
happy moments; they make a good cushion for old age.
Hello students, parents, and fellow
• Treasurer-Tory Johnson-799-8748
As a board our goal is to keep
Little League in Fremont for generations
to come.
We are blessed with two great ball
fields. However, they require continuous
maintenance which of course
takes money.
Our major projects for the 2011
season are re-rocking both infields,
re-roofing all four dugouts, and new
cooking equipment for both concession
stands. Our hope is that we can
accomplish these projects through
donations and fundraising.
We have four grants we will be
applying for. If received, our goal
is to have new concession and restroom
facilities constructed. These
are fairly aggressive plans, but as a
board we are committed to making
these facilities a reality! So, let the
fund raisers and grant writing begin!
Our first fundraiser! Fremont
Outside Iowa
The Sportsman’s Vote
I will be perfectly honest with you; I am (unapologetically) a very political
person. I was raised to fully know what and who I am voting for and that
voting in itself is our DUTY as Americans. I have left politics out of this
weekly column, as the passion we all have for Iowa’s outdoors, which binds
us together, is stronger than our political ties. I have no intention to sway
your vote in any party direction, rather present an issue that needs your attention
during the general election on November 2nd.
Iowa’s Sustainable Funding is an issue that WILL directly affect all of us.
The positive ramifications from this investment will only further the quality
and opportunities of our outdoor pursuits. This bill will provide benefits
such as sustainable agriculture and soils, cleaner water, positive economic
impacts, and increased wildlife management strategies. As outdoorsmen and
women, regardless of political affiliation, we need to support this bill.
Iowa needs approximately $150 million annually in addition to what us
currently allocated. Before you let that number scare you, keep in mind that
regarding a statewide amount that really isn’t very much. With much concern
on increased spending in Washington, how can we justify this? And, where
will that kind of money come from? Iowa currently has a 6% sales tax. If
Sustainable Funding is passed, that $150 million will come from a percentage
of the next penny sales tax increase, which usually comes around every
couple years. When that specifically happens is up to the state legislature,
but rest assured, it will be soon. When it comes to preserving our outdoor
heritage and promoting opportunities for our youth, no amount is too much.
Rather than specifically raising taxes for this figure, Iowans have the
chance to vote on creating a trust fund, which will protect these allocated
funds exclusively for supporting our natural resources. Iowa’s outdoors are
second to none, but they cost money to maintain. Speaking from a personal
standpoint, I have no problem doing everything I can to monetarily support
those who make my outdoor opportunities possible. Why not continue to
improve our already excellent natural resources.
Once passed these funds will be distributed among seven logical avenues,
of which are structured independently, yet complement each other’s
purpose: LR (Lake Restoration), REAP (Resource Enhancement And Protection
program), WP (Watershed Protection), LCPP (Local Conservation
Partnership Program), Trails and Natural Resources (Iowa Department of
Natural Resources), Agricultural and Land Stewardship (Iowa Department
of Agriculture and Land Stewardship).
For this to become reality, Sustainable Funding had to pass the two General
Assemblies before Iowans get the opportunity to vote it through. The
time has come for US to take part in enhancing the future of Iowa’s next
generation of anglers and hunters. It is up to the residents of Iowa to pass
along the quality ethics and outdoor heritage, but it doesn’t stop there. As
sportsmen and women, we have a powerful voice that needs to be heard, not
only in regards to our personal affiliation, but also to the future of Iowa’s
Natural Resources.
While I have my convictions, I want to urge you to fully educate yourself
on who and what you are voting for, and then make the decision that best
suits your future; every single vote counts. A lot of big changes are coming
this November on both the state and national levels, and I firmly believe we
can have an impact!
I will be present at the polls on November 2nd fulfilling my obligation
as an Iowa resident and an American citizen. I hope you will to. Vote for
Sustainable Funding, your children will thank you for it!
Keokuk County Hospice
Celebrates 25th Anniversary
In celebration of Keokuk County Hospice’s 25 th Anniversary of service
to the community, a reception is planned for Mon., Nov. 8 from 3 to 6 p.m.
at the Copper Lantern in downtown Sigourney. The public is encouraged to
attend.
As with many vital community services, Keokuk County Hospice started
after a community member recognized a true need for hospice services in
the area. Margaret Siskow of Sigourney went through volunteer training
for Mahaska County Hospice in 1983 because she believed in the hospice
philosophy. But she wanted hospice services available to her own friends and
neighbors.
“How could I continue providing the compassionate care offered through
hospice for other communities when there was a need right here in my own
community?” Siskow asked.
Spearheading publicity and public meetings to get the community behind
starting their own hospice service, Margaret was unstoppable. She gathered
her friends and supporters of the project, helped form a steering committee
and in 1985, saw the dream of hospice services in the area become a reality.
Keokuk County Hospice was formed.
“We had a lot of community help and even had donated office space,”
Siskow explained. “This was truly a community effort and numerous people
came out to volunteer and support Keokuk County Hospice. In fact, they still
do.
“A lot has changed since we first opened, but community involvement is
still very high, which allows us to continue offering hospice services to our
friends and neighbors,” said Siskow.
Keokuk County Hospice merged with Mahaska Health Partnership in
1995. According to MHP Home Health and Hospice Services Director Kim
Lambert, RN, a major benefit of the merger for Keokuk County was becoming
Medicare certified and being able to provide more care and beneficial services
than they were able to offer as a volunteer hospice organization.
“Both hospice services are vital to the communities they serve,” Lambert
said. “As government regulations change, we find great strength in our
partnership and have even been able to increase the services we provide by
being part of the Mahaska Health Partnership family.”
2010 Emergency Conversation
Program (ECP) Assistance Available
Producers who have experienced extreme damage to their land caused by
heavy rains and flooding during the summer of 2010 can apply for assistance
to repair damages at the Keokuk County FSA Office. The application period
ends on December 14, 2010.
Producers must come into the office to
complete an application before starting the
repair work. A FSA employee must also conduct
an on-site field inspection before work
can be initiated. At the time of application,
producers will be required to accurately designate
the damaged conservation structures or
land on a map and to accurately estimate the
cost of repair. Cost to repair damages must
exceed $1000.00 per producer to be eligible
for ECP and the damage must be of such
magnitude that it would be too costly for the
producer to rehabilitate without Federal assistance.
FSA County Committee will determine
land eligibility based on the on-site inspections.
For land to be eligible, the damage
caused by natural disaster must create new
conservation problems that, if untreated,
would impair the productivity of the land due
to erosion, etc. Conservation problems existing
before this summer are not eligible for
ECP assistance as the purpose of ECP is only
to bring the land back to pre-disaster conditions
not to make things bigger and better.
Funds are available to repair terrace
breaks, intakes, outlets, clean out drainage
ditches, repair waterways, repair ponds and
dams, incorporating sand and silt into the soil
and removing debris from fields that were
flooded. Producers are required to complete
the repair work within 6 months of the application
approval date and must submit bills
timely to receive cost share payments.
Please call the office at (641) 622-2800 to
make an appointment to complete application
process.
COMMENTS:
Great win for the Rockets tonight. We started out slow on the scoreboard,
but we seemed to have done that most of the season. Coming from
behind isn’t unusual for us. We don’t give up and keep moving forward no
matter what. We utilized some of those free balls to get back the momentum.
We stayed aggressive with our serving and strong on the quick attack. The
intensity was a lot better than it has been and everyone played with a positive
attitude. Good job to everyone and we look forward to the upcoming match
next Tuesday at Pella Christian.
Fremont 5th and 6th Grade
Admonished to THINK FIRST!
A wonderful lesson was once again brought to Fremont’s young people
on October 20. Every other year the school welcomes a presentation from
ThinkFirst Iowa regarding traumatic –injury prevention.
This free community-service program is sponsored by Iowa Health System
and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau. Topics covered include vehicle
safety (wearing seatbelts and driving chemically-free), wearing helmets,
checking water depth when swimming and diving and avoiding violence.
The goal of this program is to protect the brains and spinal cords of youngsters
as they lead their active lives. They emphasize, “thinking first” in the
hopes that they will save even one life with their presentations.
During the program, the students learned how to protect their vital organs
by making safe choices and listened to a guest speaker who has personally
faced a traumatic injury. They also watched a video with teens and young
adults telling their stories, which included poor decisions that led to injuries.
Getting a feel for what it is like to be wheel-chair dependent at age 18, and
how memory, mobility and speech are affected by a brain-injury will hopefully
cause children to slow down and think before they act.
