The refinery cannot exist without its employees A refinery is an extremely complex unit where people with a very wide range of specialities work together. Total Raffinaderij Antwerpen is a highly dynamic enterprise that employs some 1,000 specialised employees. Its company culture focuses on people: the talent of our employees and the coordinated way in which they collaborate are of essential significance. Education By investing in training and education, the refinery is constantly investing in its employees. In addition to the technical training that is vital to the realization of the desired competencies within the various functions, considerable attention is also paid to training in the areas of safety, the environment, quality management, information technology and languages. Via the ACTA project, Total Raffinaderij Antwerpen also contributes to the sustainable development of people. Each year a number of young people participate in 20-week theoretical training courses as process operators at ACTA. During the remaining 32 weeks of that year, these people receive support from experienced employees within our refinery as they learn to translate this theory into practice. They thus increase their chances of employment within the Antwerp industrial zone.

Refinery: Four particular steps 1. Distillation Crude oil is a mixture of hydrocarbons, ranging from the lightest (gas and LPG) to the heaviest (fuel oil). In order to separate this mixture, it must first be heated up to 360°C. In the distillation columns, the different fractions are then separated according to their boiling points. 2. Conversion The products that we distil from crude oil must be further upgraded in order to meet the requirements of the market. The conversion units alter the chemical structure of the hydrocarbon molecules, with the result that their charac- teristics and qualities are improved.
