Total Raffinaderij Antwerpen
Total Raffinaderij Antwerpen is the largest, most complex refinery in the Total
group, and the second largest refinery in Europe. Thanks to our location in
the port of Antwerp, we can export products by sea-going vessels, barges
and pipelines.
Total Raffinaderij Antwerpen is an important link in the integrated petro-
chemical complex of Total, which refines crude oil into plastic.
Mammoth tankers unload the crude oil at Rotterdam in the MET terminal.
This crude oil, with both high and low sulphur content, is pumped to Antwerp
through the RAPL pipeline and is processed in the refinery and turned into high-quality products such as petrols, diesel
and kerosenes for the European and American market, and into base products such as naphtha, butane and aromatics
for the petrochemical industry. These base products are transformed by Fina Antwerp Olefins in steam crackers into light
components such as ethylene, butadiene and propylene. At Total Petrochemicals Antwerpen the ethylene is polymerized into
polyethylene. The propylene is sent via a pipeline to Total Petrochemicals Feluy, where it is polymerized into polypropylene.

Our products are mainly exported via pipeline and inland

The focus: safety, health, the environment
and quality
Safety and health
We strive to prevent all accidents. This begins with well-
designed installations, proper maintenance, optimal
operation and inspection by well-trained employees.
Since 1968, the refinery has utilized the International Safety
Rating System (ISRS) as its safety management and
measurement system. This has resulted in a noticeable
improvement in our safety results.
Total injury frequency
Periodic internal and external audits measure the concrete
experience of safety and enable the refinery to make
even more improvements. We utilize extensive safety and
health procedures. Each year, a large percentage of the
total investment budget goes into projects for upgrading
the general safety level. In the construction of new units,
we pay maximum attention to ergonomics and means of
collective protection.
Total Raffinaderij Antwerpen has its own fire brigade
that is available around the clock for intervention. The
brigade has its own practice site and an extensive range
of vehicles.
The environment
Environmental care is one of the main priorities at Total
Raffinaderij Antwerpen, for which we have developed a
preventive policy. Clean water and air emission, limiting
and sorting waste, avoiding soil contamination, excessive
noise and odours - these are all environmental aspects
regarding which Total Raffinaderij Antwerpen has an
influence and a commitment to take positive action.
In the context of sustainable development, the refinery
wishes to manage the influence of its activities on the
environment by decreasing its contribution to the green-
house emissions. To this end we have prepared a long-
range energy improvement plan for optimizing our use of
energy. In addition the refinery has a cogeneration unit
that decreases our consumption of energy.
Energy intensity index
Our air, soil, water and noise standards are monitored
daily. As far as possible we collect our waste selectively
to increase its re-use and recycling.

throughout our entire production process. Continuous analysis
makes it possible for us to intervene quickly in response to any

exist without its
employees
A refinery is an extremely complex unit where people
with a very wide range of specialities work together. Total
Raffinaderij Antwerpen is a highly dynamic enterprise that
employs some 1,000 specialised employees. Its company
culture focuses on people: the talent of our employees
and the coordinated way in which they collaborate are of
essential significance.
Education
By investing in training and education, the refinery is
constantly investing in its employees.
In addition to the technical training that is vital to the
realization of the desired competencies within the various
functions, considerable attention is also paid to training in
the areas of safety, the environment, quality management,
information technology and languages.
Via the ACTA project, Total Raffinaderij Antwerpen also
contributes to the sustainable development of people.
Each year a number of young people participate in 20-week
theoretical training courses as process operators at ACTA.
During the remaining 32 weeks of that year, these people
receive support from experienced employees within our
refinery as they learn to translate this theory into practice.
They thus increase their chances of employment within the
Antwerp industrial zone.

The position of Total
Total is the fourth leading integrated oil group listed in the

Refinery:
Four particular steps
1. Distillation
Crude oil is a mixture of hydrocarbons, ranging from the
lightest (gas and LPG) to the heaviest (fuel oil). In order to
separate this mixture, it must first be heated up to 360°C.
In the distillation columns, the different fractions are then
separated according to their boiling points.
2. Conversion
The products that we distil from crude oil must be further
upgraded in order to meet the requirements of the market.
The conversion units alter the chemical structure of the
hydrocarbon molecules, with the result that their charac-
teristics and qualities are improved.

3. Purification
After separation, the products must be purified. Purification is
necessary in order to prevent contamination of the catalysts
and/or to remove environmentally toxic substances at the
source. For example, the surplus sulphur must be removed
from gasoline and diesel.
4. Blending
The final step in refining consists of blending the various
components obtained through distillation, conversion and
purification into a market ready product (such as kerosene,
diesel, gasoline, heating oil, bitumen, etc.). Depending on
the country of destination and the season, the product is
made in various qualities.

within the framework of sustainable development and in accordance within the guidelines of the group,
always operate in a safe, ecological, health-conscious and customer oriented manner. For this reason:
• we always comply with all applicable laws and regulations. When it is useful for the protection of
the community, the environment or our installations, we lend our expertise to the establishment
of laws, regulations and standards.
• we strive to limit all risks of personal accidents or illness, damage to the environment or our
installations, and quality decreases. We use certified dynamic management systems - ISRS
for safety, ISO 14001 for the environment, ISO 9001 for quality and ISPS for security - to
systematically evaluate our activities in terms of possible risks and to adjust them when
necessary, in view of continuous improvement.
• we will take care to always dispose of appropriate operational safety systems that are regularly
tested. Furthermore, in view of safety and environmental risks we will analyse our installations
systematically using the best available techniques.
• though preventing accidents is our primary objective, we are nonetheless constantly prepared to
intervene quickly and expertly in emergency situations. For this purpose we maintain an emergency
plan that is constantly upgraded pursuant to an annually established drill programme.
• we take all due care when acquiring and training new employees so that we can work together
with only motivated and expert personnel. We strive to convince everyone that they play a vital
role in guaranteeing their own safety, that of their colleagues and of the installations. This is an
important element in our annual evaluations.
• we demand that our contractors and suppliers apply similar safety, health, quality and
environmental management systems during the activities they execute for us.
• in our contacts with external parties and during recruitment, we will act in a moral way according
to the guidelines of the group. Naturally these rules also apply when supporting local initiatives.
• we strive to manage the effect of our activities on the environment:
o by further improving our energy efficiency and thus decreasing our relative contribution
to greenhouse emissions. To this end we have established a long-term energy
improvement plan, and we monitor and optimise our energy consumption on a daily
basis.

air, the soil, the water and noise, making adjustments as necessary.
