Purification is necessary in order to prevent contamination of the catalysts and/or to remove environmentally toxic substances at the source. For example, the surplus sulphur must be removed from gasoline and diesel. 4. Blending The final step in refining consists of blending the various components obtained through distillation, conversion and purification into a market ready product (such as kerosene, diesel, gasoline, heating oil, bitumen, etc.). Depending on the country of destination and the season, the product is made in various qualities.

When it is useful for the protection of the community, the environment or our installations, we lend our expertise to the establishment of laws, regulations and standards. • we strive to limit all risks of personal accidents or illness, damage to the environment or our installations, and quality decreases. We use certified dynamic management systems - ISRS for safety, ISO 14001 for the environment, ISO 9001 for quality and ISPS for security - to systematically evaluate our activities in terms of possible risks and to adjust them when necessary, in view of continuous improvement. • we will take care to always dispose of appropriate operational safety systems that are regularly tested. Furthermore, in view of safety and environmental risks we will analyse our installations systematically using the best available techniques. • though preventing accidents is our primary objective, we are nonetheless constantly prepared to intervene quickly and expertly in emergency situations. For this purpose we maintain an emergency plan that is constantly upgraded pursuant to an annually established drill programme. • we take all due care when acquiring and training new employees so that we can work together with only motivated and expert personnel. We strive to convince everyone that they play a vital role in guaranteeing their own safety, that of their colleagues and of the installations. This is an important element in our annual evaluations. • we demand that our contractors and suppliers apply similar safety, health, quality and environmental management systems during the activities they execute for us. • in our contacts with external parties and during recruitment, we will act in a moral way according to the guidelines of the group. Naturally these rules also apply when supporting local initiatives. • we strive to manage the effect of our activities on the environment: o by further improving our energy efficiency and thus decreasing our relative contribution to greenhouse emissions. To this end we have established a long-term energy improvement plan, and we monitor and optimise our energy consumption on a daily basis. o by monitoring the standards of our operating permits on a daily basis with regard to the air, the soil, the water and noise, making adjustments as necessary. o by selectively collecting our waste as much as possible, in order to improve re-use and recycling.
