1841 CENSUS (HO107)
The searchability of Census records has improved considerably in recent times. The main access to
English and Welsh Censuses is now available online free of charge to library members at the
Central Library via the “Ancestry” and “findmypast” websites. These are searchable by surname
and cover the whole of England, Wales and Scotland for the 1841, and the whole of England and
Wales for the 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911 Censuses.
For researchers who prefer not to use online sources, the Central Library holds microform and
some printed copies of all the Fylde area censuses between 1841 and 1901 inclusive. These cover all
the towns and villages from the Fylde coast up to approximately the line of the present-day M6
Motorway, including Garstang but excluding Preston and Lancaster. Surname indexes have been
produced for most of these records up to 1891, and these indexes are listed in this section.
For the 1881 Census the Library holds the fully indexed edition for the whole of Great Britain,
arranged by county. For more detail see the entry for that Census.
Please ask to speak to the Local History Librarian if you require advice about accessing census
records.
The Central Library has the S. & N. 1841 Census for Lancashire and Yorkshire on CDRoms, but
please note that these are not searchable by surname. For surname searchable versions use
Ancestry or findmypast.
SURNAME INDEXES
The L.F.H.H.S. has published a list of the surname index fiches it has produced for the Censuses
between 1841-1871 and 1891. They are mostly for post-1974 Lancashire. For each Census the list
gives the piece number, the number of fiches and the towns and villages covered.
