D2.1 Trade Directories Enquiry Desk LA21
The Library’s collection of historic trade directories covers predominantly Blackpool and the Fylde.
This includes towns and rural settlements as far inland as Garstang, but not Preston or Lancaster. The
area of coverage is similar to that of the Census (see items C3.1841/1, /2 and /3 for typical lists of
towns and villages covered). Some of the early directories, where indicated in the list below, cover the
whole of pre-1974 Lancashire, that is to say including Manchester and Liverpool.
Care should be exercised in the use of these directories as the layout can be confusing. For example, in
some of the early directories Blackpool is listed under Poulton; settlements such as Bispham and Marton
are sometimes listed under Blackpool and sometimes have their own section separate from Blackpool.
Examine the contents page of each directory carefully, and where the settlement you require is not
mentioned check under the nearest larger town; for example the entries for Elswick appear in the Great
Eccleston section of many directories and there are numerous further examples of this process.
Researchers will find the Barrett directories issued from 1885 particularly helpful, as these include a full
listing by address as well as a listing of trades.
NB STREET NAME CHANGES
Many Blackpool street names have changed as the town has grown. For lists of changes, ask at the
