PRESIDENT'S COLUMN<br />

AS you may be aware, over the past months there has been a<br />

degree of unrest between some of our shooters and the <strong>Association</strong><br />

as a whole. If you read my column in the April CTSN you will<br />

have read comments that I made m this regard.<br />

I also Invited comments from those concerned to write to the<br />

CTSN and explain their actions. This has taken place and it was the<br />

intention to publish these letters plus others in this issue of the<br />

CTSN.<br />

Fortunately for <strong>Clay</strong> <strong>Target</strong> Shooting, commonsense has prevailed<br />

on both sides and agreement reached that no purpose<br />

would be served m pursuing thls line of thinking. We thank those<br />

who took the time to write to the CTSN and their decision along<br />

with the <strong>Association</strong> to put the best mterests of the sport before all<br />

else.<br />

ENCOURAGEMENT PLAN<br />

Correspondence from the <strong>Australian</strong> Inshtute of Sport contains<br />

the advice that an amount in excess of $1 6m has been approved<br />

under the <strong>1990</strong> Step Program wlth athletes receiving grants from<br />

$2000 to $100.000 to offset costs of training and overseas competition<br />

Two of our members have been favourably cons~dered by the<br />

Institute wlth grants of $4000 being approved for Ian Hale and<br />

$2000 for John Maxwell<br />

Competitors in the Double Barrel Championship at the <strong>1990</strong>Trap<br />

Nationals were provided with a questionnaire m an attempt to<br />

obtain their opinion on various items concerning the National<br />

Championships. The results of the survey are published below to<br />

inform those who assisted in the gathering of the information of the<br />

survey and to inform others not m Tasmania as to how competitors<br />

responded to the various questions contained in the survey.<br />

The information gathered from the Tasmanian Nationals will<br />

have been discussed by the National Executive Committee during<br />

May and a report on their findings will be printed at an early date.<br />

BREAK RECORD<br />

Wagga Gun Club member Maree Rooke shot what is believed<br />

to be an <strong>Australian</strong> Ladles record at the recent Victorian <strong>Clay</strong><br />

<strong>Target</strong> <strong>Association</strong> State Championships<br />

Shooting at the Melbourne Gun Club, Maree recorded a<br />

20-target break on Saturday plus an additional 12 targets m the<br />

shoot-off On Sunday 15th April Maree broke 100 targets in the<br />

State Skeet Championship plus an additional 8 targets m the shoot-<br />

otl for the State tltle to f~nish with a skeet break totallmq 140 Con-<br />

qratulat~ons Maree on an outslanding effort.<br />

Natlonal Champtonshlps conducted at the Belfast Gun Club In<br />

Chrlstchurch from the 10th to 16th March The smaller than<br />

average number was perhaps because our own Nationals were<br />

only a few days away<br />

Because the NZ Slngle Rise shoot-off ran over until the next<br />

TERRITORY SHOOTING<br />

Thls month I cannot do anything else but to indulge in some real<br />

beaut skitlng on behalf oi our magnificent representatives at the<br />

recent National Trap Championships in Tasmania and I am going<br />

to enjoy every syllable of it all!<br />

Although the Terrrtory team did not do so well in the team event<br />

(poss~bly a case of ' early nattonal nerves' ) Terrttory shooters<br />

came home showered in glory. In fact it was the best combined<br />

result Territory shooters have had in the decade or so of our<br />

iieldinu a ~err~tory team<br />

Greg Chan vron the Nattonal Points Score Chdmpionshlp being<br />

the only shocter In the ileld of 360 that day lo shoot a perfect score<br />

Greq shot ear!v end rust sat back and watched the rest of Australla<br />

try to catch up. ice going Greg.<br />

Yulara C grader (surely not any more?), Paul Warren, shooting<br />

oif 16m. won the National Handicap Championship in a shoot-off<br />

from Tony Bradshaw with a score oi 82/82. That score would be<br />

one to be proud oi in any handicap event Paul, let alone a national<br />

championship. Well done mate!<br />

The Darwin Gun Club team of Greg Chan. Phil Grove. Ken<br />

Selwood. Victor Fertiklis and Doug Chan then went on to win the<br />

<strong>Australian</strong> Club Champlonship after a shoot-off from the defending<br />

champions Echuca Gun Club. They competed against 60 other<br />

clubs. The championship 1s decided over 250 targets after which it<br />

was found that they had tied on points with the Echuca team. An<br />

extra 25 targets had to be shot and Darwin took the title by one<br />

point. This effort has placed the club on the map as a shooting<br />

centre and should raise interest in the annual shoot already well-<br />

known around the country. What more can I say?<br />

Further congratulations are in order for Greg Chan and Ken<br />

Selwood who have been selected for the <strong>Australian</strong> McIntosh<br />

team. For those of you who may not be aware, the Mclntosh trophy<br />

1s . hot hetween ..~ all -~~ Commonwealth countries and is one of the<br />

~ ~~~<br />

prestlglous events on our national calendar. It would be a cause<br />

for celebrat~ons to get one Terrttortan Into the team let alone two.<br />

Fantastic, fellows!<br />

Ken Selwood came third in A Grade with 52/54 in the Single<br />

Barrel and Greg Chan was unlucky when he dropped his 70th<br />

target in the shoot-off of the Double Barrel Champlonship.<br />

The performance of our shooters was slmply magniftcent, really<br />

placing theTerrltory on the natlonal shootlng map. Take a bow you<br />

blokes!<br />

CONGRATULATIONS<br />

The wins by Kevin Perkins (Perk) of the Overall Trap High Gun<br />

and the Single Barrel Championship at the National Ghampionships<br />

in Tasmania were a great thrill for many and may I say very<br />

popular wins also.<br />

Over the years I have seen many great shooters and sportsmen<br />

win the overall high gun but for me this was a win truly deserved<br />

by a person who just loves shooting at all levels, whether il be trap.<br />

skeet or ISU trench.<br />

Kevin has run second on three occasions at National Championships<br />

over the years in the Double Barrel, Single Barrel and<br />

Double Rise, he has al:o been a member of the skeet team that<br />

toured USA and the trap team that toured Britain.<br />

I have known Kevln far some 20 years. He helped me, as he has<br />

helped many others, when I first started shooting at the lllawarra<br />

Gun Club on their old grounds. He has been a hard working<br />

committeeman at lllawarra for many years at both the old club and<br />

the present club.<br />

TO Kevn and h~s greatest supporter Juay may I congratulate<br />

you both on behelf of all the shooters for your efforts and your conlr~bution<br />

mania. Stuart holds the positlon of the State's Coaching Director.<br />

He has forwarded the following article which proves most inter-<br />

esting. I<br />

DO YOU VALUE YOUR HEARING?<br />

The ear 1s made up of three sections: The outer, the middle and<br />

thelnner.<br />

The outer ear is the part that 1s seen, and it opens into the ear<br />

canal. The eardrum separates the ear canal from the middle ear..<br />

There are three small bones - the hammer, anvil and stirrup<br />

located in the m~ddle ear. These bones transfer sound. The inner<br />

ear conlatns [he bdia?ce nerve end.ngs in the seml.c~rcular canals<br />

and [he heartng nerve enolnqs in !he cochlea which lead to the<br />

bra!r!<br />

Sound vibrations or waves enter the outer ear and strike the eardrum,<br />

causing it to vibrate. The vibrations are then transferred<br />

from the eardrum along the hearing bones to the cochlea, which is<br />

filled wlth fluid. The vibrations cause the liquid to move and stimulate<br />

the tiny nerve endings. The endlngs are attached to make up<br />

the hearlng nerve. The vibrations then become nerve impulses<br />

and go dtrectly to the bratn, where the impulses are interpreted as<br />

sound. The brain can then distinguish the kind of sound - a phone<br />

ringing, machinery in a factory, a gunshot.<br />

If a nolse is too loud. it will begin to kill the nerve endings in the<br />

inner ear. If a person experiences prolonged exposure to loud<br />

noise without hearing protection more nerve endings will be<br />

destroyed, resulttng in hearing loss and ringing.<br />

Sound 1s measured in two ways:<br />

1. dec~beis (dB) and<br />

2. pitch - frequency of sound vibrations per second.<br />

The decibel scale runs from 0 dB, the falntest sound a human ear<br />

can detect, to over 180 dB, which 1s the intensity of sound of a<br />

rocket launch. Most heartng experts agree that continual<br />

exposure to notses of 85 dB or more, wtthout the use ofhearing pro-<br />

tection can be damagtng.<br />

With shooters, because of a head shadow effect, one receives<br />

more noise exposure than the other. Ttierefore the left ear 1s<br />

usually worse for right handed shooters and vice versa for a left<br />

handed shooter.<br />

For personal safety and health, protect your ears from repeated<br />

or continuous exposure to any sound above 80 decibels.<br />

There are only two baslc Types of hearln~ protection ear muffs<br />

and ear plugs Both have advanrages and d.sadvantages Muffs<br />

lend toget In the way of head gear and sometlmescause ~roblems<br />

when mounting the~gun as they contact the comb of the stock.<br />

Plugs are more compact, more comfortable and do not interfere<br />

with head gear or gun stocks.<br />

Hearing loss is insidious, and begins at the higher frequencies<br />

where it may not be noticed at first. But as years go on, it shows up<br />

more and more. This means that a shooter, who has the ability to<br />

hear someone loud and clear talking one to one at age thirty may<br />

well be'into the progressive deterioration which means that at age<br />

forty he may have trouble sorting out what's bemg said in a<br />

crowded room, and at age fifty will need a hearlng aid.<br />

We have all seen older members of gun clubs who are plalnly<br />

suffertng from hearrng loss<br />

Welcome home to our State Trap team representatives, from all<br />

reports a very enjoyable Nationals. Congratulations to Tim Catling<br />

on maklng the <strong>Australian</strong> team.<br />

Closer to home things have been on the move. At the AGM in<br />

Bunbury. State Coaching Director Murray Alexander and State<br />

MALLALA GUN CLUB<br />

Mallala Gun Club's team once again have done their club proud<br />

by winning the E. Demichene & P. D'Allessandro team shield. The<br />

event was conducted in conjunction with the 25T Autumn DB<br />

Championship hosted by International Gun Club. Mallala's team<br />

members - B. Greenshields, K. Polst, B. Johnson. R. Smith and T.<br />

O'Connor scored 121/125. Mallala's reserve team member J. Ellis<br />

shot a 25/25 in this event as well - Mallala members took out the<br />

event inever/ grade -0A & A: Ron Smith, AA: B. Johnson, B: John<br />

Ellis and C: Helen Johnson. Not a bad effort for a country gun club<br />

visiting their city cousins.<br />

We dl1 thought that 11 doesn't happen that onen for a visiting club<br />

to take out the overall and every grade trophy in a double barrel<br />

champ~onsh.p event - a good effort.<br />

Mallala club members also braved the cold and windy condi-<br />

tions at Monarto's Anniversaq shoot over the weekend of April<br />

21/22. All members shot well and had a great time. especially the<br />

moup that walked to dinner at a Chinese restaurant on the Satur-<br />

day night and staggered back to the motel much later. How could<br />

they have gotten that happy on coke? It is a question only Bernie<br />

Greenshields can answer. One of Mallala's lady shooters was<br />

fa~rly sheepish on Sunday morning - it was noticed that she was<br />

wearing her roll-neck skivvy as high as possible, can the coke<br />

attacker ~ -~ -~ answer -- for ~~- that. The team a little under the weather came<br />

third in each of ~onarto's ~Geld shoo~. Just watch out next year -<br />

we will return for the fun of it.<br />

FAR WEST GUN CLUB<br />

The annual two-dav shoot of the Far West Gun Club was conducted<br />

on Aortl14 a& 15 last. The attendance was the ooorest that<br />

about until Sunday to complete the program as listed<br />

However, what was lacking in number was made up for in<br />

quality and with climate conditions betng as near perfect for<br />

shoot~ng as one could desire and wtth the flies givlng everyone<br />

their continual anention a very real carnival ahnosphere prevailed<br />

with lots of friendly waving being a feature. Boy, those flies were<br />

persistent. They were sprayed, swatted, shooed, cursed.<br />

munched, crunched and swallowed but nobody and nothing<br />

depleted their enthusiasm nor their numbers. Of couise nobody<br />

really believed Paul Beale when he complained they were using<br />

his sighting rib for a slippery dip - our flies are all business and<br />

no funny business.<br />

All oroblems aside. evervone breasted the taw to contest ~~ the ~<br />

SOT lilial Trap wlth some &cellent scores recorded, generally<br />

speaking. I am sure Jess Averis wolld do better at baUtrap if he<br />

didn t keep repeating his trench lessons during !he shoot.<br />

When the last ball had been trapred an up and coming Local<br />

shwter in Steve Chapman led the way vrith a 48/50 lor B grade &<br />

OA followed by Trevor Heard scoring 46/50. C grade honours<br />

went to Paul Beale with 47/50,<br />

Aner an excellent lunch served by the ladies tn the kttchen the<br />

SOT Handlcap was contested.<br />

When the bulldust had settled another'local shooter Alan Suter<br />

had out his name on Iirst with a nice 53/55 after a short shoot-off<br />

brandt) Butson with 43/50.<br />

After putting the feet under the table once again it was back to<br />

the tracks for the final leg. When the 50T plus the shoot-offs were<br />

conductedjohn Holder showed the way in~grade with a score of<br />

49/55. Steve Chapman was m the money again for first in B grade<br />

52/55. C grade shooter George Burnett on 41/50 twk his grade<br />

honours.<br />

The Kym Parker Memorial High Gun Cup went to the man with<br />

Monein oiled barrels in Paul Beale with a score for the weekend of<br />

198/205, a top effort Paul.<br />

Local High Gun was taken out by Alan Suter who had to shoot-off<br />

with Trevor Heard for the honour as both were one target behind<br />

Paul on 191/205. Alan recorded 209/227 and Trevor 208/227.<br />

So there you have it folks. If you were there you enjoyed it and<br />

Our next major shoot is our Crayfish Carnival on July 28th-29th<br />

featuring 25Pr Commonwealth Double Rise Championship and 40<br />

State Mixed <strong>Target</strong> Championship and Crayfish<br />

The City of Geraldton hosted the <strong>1990</strong> Mid-West Games. with<br />

approximately 3000 competitors from 18 shires in 41 nominated<br />

sports taking part. Competitors came from all parts of the Mid-<br />

West Region, ranging from the Wiiuna Shire in the north to the<br />

The Games are run along similar lines to the Olympic and<br />

Commonwealth Games with the shnes, in effect representing the<br />

various countries. Competitors then compete for gold, silver and<br />

bronze medals m !nd!vidual and team events depending upon the<br />

sport involved.<br />

The Geraldton Gun Club hosted a six-event <strong>Clay</strong> <strong>Target</strong> programme<br />

over two days with shooters coming from the Northampton,<br />

Muliewa. Greenough and Geraldton Shires.<br />

Saturday April 21.51 saw 18 shooters competing in the two events<br />

scheduled<br />

The first event was SO <strong>Target</strong> Skeet with B. Chandler shooting<br />

SO/SO which gave him the gold medal m A Grade, D. Hilsz won<br />

gold in B Grade with 48 and G. Cammock winning gold in C Grade<br />

with 45/50.<br />

The second event was a 50 <strong>Target</strong> Skeet Teams event, with competitors<br />

nominating their &man team. This was won by B. Chandler<br />

47/50, D. Hilsz 47/50 and S. Horo 44/50 with a combined score of<br />

138/150 which gave them all a gold medal. The silver was won by<br />

the team consisting of D. Wellington, R. Burton and G. Cammock<br />

with a combined score of 126/150 and the bronze went to G. Kelly,<br />

E. Daw and P. Stuart with 120/150 after a shoot-oif with L. Watson,<br />

G. Wulff and F. Bombara.<br />

Sunday April 22nd saw 27 shooters competing in the four events<br />

of a case of ammo went to ticket No. 66 owned by Mrs Thelma<br />

Meadows of Brisbane and another good worker for her club. Congratulations<br />

The Brisbane/Gymp~e Australia Day Police Charity Shoot<br />

resulted in $400 going to Leukaemia Foundation and $400 to Brain<br />

Damage Foundation. Thanks once again to the police who<br />

travelled and gave their time to work for charity.<br />

Our Timber City One-Day Shoot had an attendance of 42<br />

shooters from all over the State with Victorian Bill Bright of<br />

Numurkah competing also. High Guns on the day went to R.<br />

Rehbem (A Grade). B. Stoilberg (B Grade) and B. Bnght (C Grade).<br />

The third event was 25 <strong>Target</strong> Single Barrel with gold in A Grade<br />

going to B. Boschetti with 20/25. gold in B Grade to G. Kelly with<br />

21/25 and gold in C Grade to G. Cammock 23/25.<br />

Rod Felt earned another metre as well as the AA High Gun<br />

honours of the day. G. Dixon look A Grade High Gun, A. Wood<br />

featuring in every event took the B Grade and J. Wilson C Grade<br />

honours.<br />

The Skeet Hiah Gun sash was won bv B. Chandler with 97/100<br />

The Trap High Gun sash was won by G. Kelly 125/145 after a<br />

to win the Overall in the "Cooloola Classic" DB event, the malor on<br />

Passed away February <strong>1990</strong>. Mick was a highly regarded<br />

member of the Geelong Club for 27 years. He was a tireless<br />

worker m the development of the Clubrooms and trap machinery,<br />

Past Treasurer. President and Committee member. Mick<br />

achieved State Team selection at Skeet and was always in the forefront<br />

in Skeet and Tower at Club and District level.<br />

Vince Oliveri improved all day - gaining a bronze in the fourth,<br />

a silver in the fifth, a gold in the last event after a shoot-off with G.<br />

Cammock<br />

We shooters will miss Mick's cheerful countenance and willingness<br />

<strong>Jun</strong>ee hosted the Zone Carnival and Team Ellmination on 29th<br />

April and some 8C-plus shooters attended. Should have some<br />

are urged to start making accommodation arrangements. Motels<br />

ill1 fast in Tamworth due to massive sporting activit~es over this<br />

weekend. Those wishing to camp are more than welcome by the<br />

Club -who have first class iacilities.<br />

<strong>1990</strong> NATIONAL TRAP CHAMPIONSHIPS<br />

After an absence of some IS years the Trap Nationals returned<br />

to the Tasmanian Gun Club at Evandale and wh~le not as well<br />

anended so far as mainland shooters were concerned they<br />

certainly gained support irom the reg~slered shooters in Tas<br />

mania. Commencing under difficulties with the absence of State<br />

Secretary. Kaye Woods due to illness, the Nat~onals were very<br />

well conducted by TCTA offic~als. W~th a hard working and<br />

efficient Office Manager in Molly Bryan, their fears of maybe not<br />

having the experience to conduct a Nat~onal Champ~onships were<br />

quickly dispelled and to their credit the happenings that take<br />

place beh~nd the scenes were attended to with the utmost<br />

efi~ciency. One oithe more pleas~ng aspects whsh highlighted the<br />

Tasmanian commitment was the appearance of Kaye durmg the<br />

Nationals "lust alter some time in hospital, just to make sure that<br />

everything was going okay" - 11 was.<br />

The opening ceremony which involved all State Shoulder to<br />

Shoulder teams was most impressive with all teams marching to<br />

take uo their oosition under their resoective State flaos to the<br />

acccmpanimei~of a Scotttsh picer 'opening the ~ismanlan<br />

Nat~onals !he State Premier. The Hon M~chael F~eld commented<br />

on the pr~de lhat Tasmanla does lake in hosttng maloc s~or11r.g<br />

events, none more than our own clay target championships. Under<br />

the guidance of National Executive member and State Coaching<br />

Director Stuart Browning, the Prem~er fired the openlng shot of the<br />

championships and while not successiul in breaking the target the<br />

Premier was obv~ously enloytng the break from the rigours of<br />

parliamentary duties.<br />

Having drawn for positions the first competlt~on event the State<br />

Teams match was underway. With the strong teams from Victoria<br />

and South Australia the most fancied. It was, however the host<br />

State Tasmania who took the honours and what better way for the<br />

championships to commence than a win for the home State who as<br />

well as winning, won well wlth only the one target dropped for the<br />

event. Cameras came from everywhere to record the winning<br />

team whose members included the well known and very experienced<br />

Sperry Marshall to the junior member of the team Royden<br />

41st GRAND AUSTRALIA HANDICAP<br />

The flrst national t~tle of the championships is the handicap which<br />

traditionally produces some surprise results. With a field of 313<br />

including shooters from New Zealand, Singapore and America the<br />

title event was full of interest right through to the last shot fired<br />

which produced a new national champion, this time from the<br />

Northern Territory club at Ayers Rock with John Warren a very<br />

proud and excited winner with his score of 86/86 from the 16m<br />

mark. To win John had to outstay some good shots and finally did<br />

this when well known Victorian Tony Bradshaw missed his 86th<br />

target from 20 metres. Another very pleased winner was Wonthaggi's<br />

Lyn Gray whose score of 55/56 from the 14-metre mark<br />

won the ladies section. NSW junlor Jason Gilkes also showed his<br />

liklng for hand~cap shooting, taking out the junior section irom 16<br />

metres with a very well shot 55/56, A popular win in the veterans to<br />

19-metre shooter Kevin Aylett from Devonport, Tasmania who is a<br />

strong supporter of the nationals wherever they are held.<br />

38th DOUBLE BARREL CHAMPIONSHIP<br />

Sponsored in its entirety by Winchester a total of 326 took the<br />

field to shoot for the double barrel title. The traditional blue ribbon<br />

event for clay target shooters was shot in conjunction with the<br />

ladies and junior double barrel championships and like the<br />

handicap was well contested.<br />

Some very good performances were recorded in the open<br />

double barrel with the shooters contmuing into the two hundreds<br />

before a winner was able to be declared. Noorat junior Glen<br />

Hayden pushed the beld all the way and while outlasting both<br />

Robert Viney (151) and Colin Burt (211) was not able to stave off<br />

Geelong's Steve Haberman whose unbeaten 219/219 won for him<br />

With a field of 25 all anxious to record a national title victory the<br />

competition was keen and strong. Victorian ladies Pauline Clarke<br />

and Fave Burton produced some excellent shootina as did our<br />

international visitor, Judy Wegner from USA. A verfdetermined<br />

Faye Burton was not going to let this one pass and scoring 58/58<br />

took the ladiestltle from Pauline Clarke 51/58 withludy Wegner in<br />

overall third place with a score of 52/53. The ladies event while not<br />

strong in numbers was strong in quality with the scores an indica-<br />

tion of the ladies' ability.<br />

CHAMPIONSHIP<br />

The quality of those competing stood out in the junior event with<br />

Glen Hayden from Noorat in Victoria shooting the possible to<br />

emerge a clear winner overall. Not far behind were Danny Di<br />

Conza 49/50 from Melbourne and Jay Cruse from St Helens 50/52<br />

their ability in the years ahead.<br />

36th SINGLE BARREL CHAMPIONSHIPS<br />

Sponsored by Winchester and with conditions throughout the<br />

championships better than what may have been expected the<br />

single barrel produced some good shooting. Tasmanian shooters<br />

while not ~ ~ dominant in the event score-wise certainlv took the<br />

honours so far 3s numbers are concerted w~ih no less than 83<br />

Cressy shooter Grahani Blaskett whose score of 51/52 look ihlrd<br />

place in AA Grade First n AA and obv~ously benefiting by the<br />

recent competition in the New Zealand Nationals was another well<br />

known shooter from Katannins Gun Club. Tim Catllng who on the<br />

day could not hold off the challenge from the multi-disciplined<br />

Kevin Perkins from Illawarra who recording an unbeaten 69/69<br />

was an emotional and extremely popular winner of the single<br />

barrel title with Jason Werner of Melbourne Gun Club and John<br />

Miatt from Tasmanian Gun Club taking the respective junior and<br />

Competing for the Winchester Trophy and the IBIS Traps Per-<br />

petual Trophy the ladies single barrel was keenly contested.<br />

A win for New Zealand in the event with well known and much<br />

travelled Zelda Maclure from Waitemata taking the ladies title<br />

with a score of46/50. A good battle took place for overall second<br />

and third with Marilvn Dwiaht from Corowa scorina 41/52 to take<br />

second place overail from one of the herd workin; off~ce ladies<br />

Nanette McCallum Like the double barrel this event whlle in its<br />

infancy so far as years go will prove to te a very popular tltle and<br />

one of the ones to win<br />

Generally referred to as the points championship, this title event<br />

being the third of the Macklntosh quallfylng events is always full of<br />

interest With sponsorsh~p from Winchester the points can be the<br />

make or break event so far as making the Mackintosh team is concerned<br />

Producing some of the best of the shooting so far NT<br />

MACKINTOSH INTERNATIONAL<br />

TEAMS MATCH<br />

Cartridges for all three Mackintosh teams were made available<br />

by Winchester for those who wished to use them. A little dis-<br />

appointing lo see one or two of those competing m the team<br />

accepting the offer from Winchester and not using the shells in<br />

competition. Let's hope that this doesn't happen agaln for a while.<br />

As there is no obligation to use the shells that are generously made<br />

available there should be a moral obligation if they are taken for<br />

that purpose.<br />

For the first time in the history of the competition all cartridges<br />

were 2891 and Winchester provided additional shells for those<br />

who not having used the 28gr shells wanted a round of practlce<br />

prior to their events.<br />

The ladies and juniors whlch are not shot on the afternoon follow-<br />

ing the points event were led by Faye Burton 249/250 and Glen<br />

Hayden 237/250 as the highest qualifiers into the teams. The<br />

strength of shooters in Victoria so far as ladies and juniors are con-<br />

cerned was noticeable with a total of six out often shooters coming<br />

from that State.<br />

The open team was led by highest qualifier Ross Walsh from<br />

Broken Hill 248/250 with Faye Burton qualifying for the open and<br />

ladles team with 242/250. State representation in the open team.<br />

Wlth scores for the Macklntosh not publicly declared until the<br />

completion of the English match in July, High Guns were won by<br />

The well contes~ed club learns malch which t.as been domin-<br />

aled in recent years by the Echuco Club produced a new viinner<br />

in <strong>1990</strong> and anoiher success for the N'S The five-nlan Darwin learn<br />

recorded a score of 782/825 to take the match from Echuca<br />

766/825 With Tasrnanlan club Cressy finishing in third place with<br />

a score of 712/750 Spokesman for the Darwm Club was the new<br />

member to the National Executive. Phil Grove who was very<br />

year of competit~on this event has been won by many good<br />

shooters over its years of existence. Proving that versatility is the<br />

key, the polnts champion from 1989, Graham Blaskett added<br />

another National Title to his credit with a very well put together<br />

198/200. With a magnificent trophy provided by Olympic <strong>Target</strong>s,<br />

competition was more than keen however the name of the title says<br />

it all as this event really sorts shooters out. At the close of shooting<br />

Lyn Curtis from Bairnsdale with a very creditable 197/200 had to<br />

be satisfied with first in AA behind overall Graham Blaskett who<br />

was adding to Tasmania's success on their home ground. At the<br />

risk of repeattng oneself, Glen Hayden was too strong for the<br />

luniors with a score of 117/125 with another win to the popular and<br />

well known Malcolm Fuller 105/125 in the veteran sections and<br />

Judy Wegner. USA, 135/150 in the ladies section of the championship.<br />

many fancied one of the Viclorians to take out thls the last of the<br />

National Titles for <strong>1990</strong> One of the Vlctorlans dld and 11 was Jon<br />

Whittakers from Echuca who prove3 to be loo good on the day for<br />

all cameras recording a score of 62/70 to win for h~mself the<br />

National Double R~se Championship. Another of the Nationals hard<br />

workers, shoot marshal John Murphy figured in the results with his<br />

score of 61/70 proving to be too much for the rest of the field of AA<br />

shooters. V~ctory again to Judy Wegner, ladies 39/40, Glen<br />

Hayden 41/50 and Kevin Aylett 43/60 who all had enjoyed good<br />

results in their competitions.<br />

10th COMARK DEAWILLE DOUBLES<br />

For the 10th successive year the Deauvllle Doubles was spon-<br />

sored by Commercial Marketing Co. of Sydney, courtesy of Mr<br />

Geoif Rabbidoe. This event while not a National Title is alwavs<br />

well supp-ir.ed with keen compet1r.on The Bur~ess sol ~obarand<br />

Tasmania were amongst those most fancied in :his event however<br />

they could do no beuer than IIntsh in Third place with the11 com.<br />

bined score of 30/31 which is good shooting at any time. Trevor<br />

and Jan Heard from Ceduna in South Australia 20/21 pushed the<br />

winners from Victoria, Faye and Ken Burton all the way and<br />

although not winning were very pleased with their second placing.<br />

The benefit of a lot of shooting throughout the week certainly held<br />

Faye Burton in good stead and this was a popular victory for both<br />

Faye and Ken who are strong s~pporters of shooting at all times.<br />

Their combined score of 21/21 won the day for them in this<br />

popular family event which after 10 years on the program had<br />

established its own tradition due no doubt to the assistance<br />

received from the sponsors of the event, Commercial Marketing.<br />

GLENN CUP<br />

Contested m New Zealand this year with Australia the defending<br />

champion. At the close of compet~tion Australia and New Zealand<br />

were locked together on 118/120. Under the terms of the competition<br />

the trophy returned to Australia to be competed for next in<br />

1991 at the ACTA National Trap Championships at Whiteman<br />

Park, Perth.<br />

by Winchester Dlvls~on of Oltn Australia In addition to the magnificent<br />

Beretta. Kevln was presented w~th the Ron Porter Remembrance<br />

Trophy by Mrs Mur~el Porter, wlfe of the late Ron Porter, a<br />

past President of the ACTA. Muriel 1s a great supporter of the<br />

ACTA and always travels to present the trophy on behalf of the<br />

delighted w~th his veterans vlctory over the three Nat~onal titles.<br />

His score of 250/275 showed that there is still plenty of good performances<br />

yet to come and as a Tasmanian what better result than<br />

a high gun wln in your own State. Kevin received the Rutherglen<br />

Although there appears to be a lot of wasted space at present,<br />

when the partitions are rearranged for more funct~onal use, that<br />

should create a good display area for trophies and the honour<br />

board.<br />

We thank Alan and the girls for their time and explanation of the<br />

sale, the purchase and function of the office, and recommend that<br />

any shooters, when in Melbourne find an hour and have a look at<br />

the ACTA office. We were suitably impressed.<br />

However, 1 hope that an eye-catching sign has been ordered for<br />

outside to tell all that it is the home of the ACTA (I forgot to ask that<br />

The Esperance Bay Gun Club conducted its 28th successful<br />

Easter Carnival on the weekend and 60 shooters came from as far<br />

as Koolan Island to compete for $7000 worth of trophies. As usual<br />

the Goldfields clubs were in strong attendance. Esperance has<br />

become known for its hosoitalitv over the vears and this vear was<br />

no exception with good shooting, good meals and good entertain-<br />

ment after the shoot.<br />
