The land of the echo, lavender and goat-nail shells<br />

The only pensinsula of Lake Balaton attracts<br />

roughly a million visitors throughout the year due<br />

to its beautiful location, geological formations,<br />

historic monuments and flora and fauna.<br />

The Benedictine Abbey, which also hosts<br />

concerts in the summer and exhibitions and other<br />

cultural events from autumn to spring, celebrated<br />

its 950th anniversary in 2005. The museum of<br />

the abbey welcomes visitors with temporary<br />

exhibitions.<br />

Among its attractions you can find the monks’<br />

houses carved into the side of the old fortress, the<br />

cells, the chapel and refectory carved into the rock<br />

by Greek Orthodox hermits between the 11th<br />

and 14th centuries.<br />

The most beautiful 20th century stations of the<br />

cross were built by public donations within a few<br />

years starting in 1926. The Romanesque crypt with<br />

three domes commissioned by King András I in<br />

1055 (at the same time as the founding of the<br />

monastery) is the only preserved royal burial<br />

chamber in Hungary. The king who died in 1060 is<br />

buried here. A copy of the foundation deed of the<br />

abbey, which is also the oldest document in<br />

Hungarian, can also be found here. Several legends<br />

are linked to Tihany.<br />

The oldest Balaton Guide from 1848 claimed<br />

the tourists to Balatonfüred took an excursion to<br />

Tihany to listen to the echo as the wall of the<br />

church on the Echo Hill would clearly repeat a<br />

quickly uttered 15-syllable sentence.<br />

The Tihany Echo remarked by various poets<br />

has gradually become weaker since the 1860s<br />

although on clear evenings with no wind it would<br />

still repeat our words.<br />
