ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
The authors of this compilation have drawn heavily on the experience and time of many
colleagues. Our contribution has bccn the collation and limited interpretation of information derived
from the publications, reports and files of the many workers who were directly or indirectly connected
with biological control projects in Canada. We exprcss our sincere gratitude to all who have compiled
unpublished data, contributed to the planning of the project, or reviewed the presentation for
accuracy of detail and expression. It is not possible to mention all who participated but a partial
listing of major contributors follows.
In Part I, special thanks must go to the following officers of the Entomology Research Institute
for Biological Control: Mr. G. Wishart for information on the European corn borer, root maggots,
pea weevil and carrot rust fly; Mr. R. \V. Smith for information on the European wheat stem sawfly
and grasshoppers; and Dr. C. Loan for information on the alfalfa weevil and sweet clover weevil.
In Part II, officers of the Forest Insect Survey were most helpful in supplying much of the
recovery data for Appendix II and information on the past and current status of forest insect outbreaks.
Particularly noteworthy were the contributions from the Atlantic Provinces by Dr. R. S.
Forbes, from Ontario by Dr. W. L. Sippell, and from British Columbia by Dr. G. T. Silver, as
biological control projects have been concentrated in these regions. Information and advice on
specific projects was supplied as follows: Dr. R. E. Balch and Mr. R. C. Clark, Fredericton, N.B.,
on the balsam woolly aphid; Mr. D. G. Embree, Truro, N.S., on the winter moth; Dr. J. Juillet,
Belleville, Ont., on the European pine shoot moth; Mr. K. Griffiths, Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., on the
European pine sawfly; Mrs. T. Finlayson, Belleville, Ont., on the European spruce sawfly, and
several members of the Winnipeg Forest Entomology Laboratory on the larch sawfly. The Plant
Protection Division of the Department of Agriculture kindly provided access to their reports and
records on the brown-tail moth, the European pine shoot moth, and the introduced pine sawfly.
Officers of the Entomology Research Institute, Ottawa, provided guidance on insect nomenclature
and assisted in the extraction of pertinent information from the Canadian National Collection of
Insects.
The actual compilation of the manuscript required much careful and painstaking work. Mr. A. R.
Graham, of the Belleville Institute, and Mr. P. A. Jones, previously of the Forest Entomology and
Pathology Branch, were responsible for the appendices and for the review and extraction of much
information from the literature and other sources consulted. They deserve special commendation
for their efforts. Many officers reviewed the manuscript and provided valuable comment, but special
thanks must go to Dr. B. P. Beirne, Director of the Entomology Research Institute for Biological
Control, and to Dr. M. L. Prebble, Director of the Forest Entomology and Pathology Branch, for
their continued interest in the project and for their most thorough and helpful reviews of the manuscript.
The Bio-Graphic Unit of the Research Branch, Department of Agriculture, prepared the
illustrations from data compiled by Mr. Jones and Mr. Graham.
To all those mentioned and to the many others who contributed, the authors extend their sincere
thanks.
xi
J. H. McLEOD, B. M. McGUGAN, H. C. COPPEL.
