were asked to

Immer wenn ich an die ESF
denke, wird mir klar, auf
was für einer tollen Schule
ich bin. Ich finde es gut,
dass es so viele Aktivitäten
gibt. Auch die Ferien sind
mehr aufgeteilt, das finde
ich besonders gut. In der
Sekundarstufe finde ich die
Freistunden gut. Die vielen
Computer und Chemieräume
finde ich super modern
und gut ausgestattet. Wir
haben einen Kiosk, wo ich
mir essen kaufe. In der Freistunde
gehe ich oft in die
Bibliothek oder in den Computerraum.
Auf dem Außengelände
kann man gut Fußball
oder Fangen spielen.
Mittags gehe ich mit meinen
Freunden in der Kantine
essen und danach gehe ich
raus und spiele ein wenig
dann muss ich in den Unterricht
und verabschiede
mich.
On Wednesday the 14 th of
November at 2:15 in the
afternoon in the Aula, the
Project Blue Exhibition officially
opened. The Exhibition
is a public display of posters,
sculptures and paintings that
can be associated with the
colour blue, symbolising how
the ESF has changed in last
10 years.
The opening was accompanied
by the instrumental
composition “Morning Blue”
by Eva Blaskovic and Claire
Hahn from the S7 German
section. The musicians
played well, filling the hall
with a good atmosphere.
Ater the musical piece, Mr
Friss, our director, held an
inspiring speech. The speech
was followed by a musical
composition called “True
Blue” which was composed
by the S7 music class to
complement the exhibition.
Later on, the Secretary
General of the European
Schools, Mr Kivenen, gave a
speech about our school,
mentioning the excellent
results the school has
achieved over the past 10
years. He told us to “carry
on like this” and to maintain
these high standards. This
speech was followed by another
musical piece called
“Le bleu de la terre” performed
by the music class of
S7 and the pre-primary
French class, directed by
Marie Orth. Having been
sung by the youngest students
and played by the oldest
students of the ESF, it
was a truly symbolic moment.
The exhibition ended with
an entertaining song sung by
the music class of S7. The

thank all the students and
staff who have helped to
make this edition possible In

We want to produce a newspaper
which reflects all the
different languages of the
European School Frankfurt,
but to do that we need contributors
from all sections.
You could write an article,
draw a cartoon, create a quiz
or write a review of a film
you’ve seen – we are open to
all suggestions. You don’t
have to contribute something

blue. Afterwards, the audience
was able to stroll
around to observe the projects
of the exhibition - having
clearly enjoyed the opening
of the "Project Blue" Exhibition.

E S S EN IN DER SCHULKANTINE
Rund 400 Schüler essen nicht in
der Schule oder werfen das Essen
weg, weil sie denken es sei nicht
frisch, nicht sauber zubereitet...
aber das hat jetzt ein Ende. Zwei
Schülerinnen aus der S2 Deutsch
haben sich in der Küche der Kantine
umgesehen und die verschiedenen
Lager besichtigt. Und sie kommen
zu dem Schluß: das Essen der
Schulkantine ist frisch, sauber zubereitet
- und schmeckt.
Music Activities at the ESF
If you like to sing or play an
instrument, you can join a choir
or orchestra at the ESF. There
are choir rehearsals on Thursdays
between 12:05-12:35 (R.
118) and Fridays, 12:50-13:30
(Aula) (s1-s3, two groups),
and an advanced chamber
choir on Wednesdays, 12:05-
12:35 (s4-s7). The orchestra
rehearses on Tuesdays from
16:20 to 17:45 in the Aula.
There are also rock bands of
different levels. For further
information contact Mr Mohr

Every year there’s a Winter
Concert in December and a
Spring Concert (next concert is
on the 18 th April, 7pm) in which
you can listen to all school
ensembles. Besides from that
there are performances on
official occasions, concert trips
to other European Schools and
extra projects like the Musical
‘Little Shop of Horrors’ in November
2009 or ‘Grease’ in
May 2011. The next Musical
will be performed on the 22 nd
and 23 rd May 2013: ‘Oliver!’ by
Lionel Bart.
So if you’re interested in the
ESF music programme, come
to our concerts or join one of

hat sie herumgeführt und ihnen Fragen
beantwortet. Zum Beispiel, ob sie mit
ihrer Mannschaft zufrieden sei? Sie
sagte ja, sie wäre sehr zufrieden mit
ihren Mitarbeitern. Die Mannschaft ist
sehr freundlich und die Leute dort haben
viel Spaß beim Arbeiten. Trotzdem
ist es viel Arbeit und man braucht viel
Konzentration. Auf Hygiene wird sehr
geachtet, die Leute tragen Handschuhe
und Kochmützen.
Weggeschmissen wird so wenig wie
möglich. Am Ende des Tages bleibt
öfter was am Kiosk übrig und dann wird
sogar manchmal etwas verschenkt. Die
Mitarbeiter bekommen auch etwas zu
essen. Wenn etwas weggeschmissen
wird, gibt es die Biotonne, die Plastiktonne
und die Restmülltonne.
Das Essen ist sehr frisch, wie man
auf dem Bild sieht. Der Salat wird gewaschen
und frisch geschnitten, die Sachen,
die man in der Auslage sieht wer-

Beim Jubiläumskonzert zum
zehnjährigen Bestehen der
Europäischen Schule stehen
am 28. November über 100
Schüler und Schülerinnen
auf der Bühne. Die Aula ist
überfüllt. Alle sind aufgeregt.
Es herrscht eine besondere
Atmosphäre in der Schule.
Im Orchester spielen
50-60 Schüler der Klassenstufen
S1 bis S7. Die
Geige ist das meistgespielte
Instrument, gefolgt von Querflöte
und Saxophon. Im Orchester
spielen auch vier
Lehrer mit. Geprobt wird
immer Dienstags von 16.30
bis 17.45 Uhr. „Ich versuche
Lieder zu finden, die alle
mögen und für alle spielbar
sind.“ meint Clemens Mohr.
„Orchester macht Spass,
weil es ein wirkliches Miteinander
ist“, sagt Claire Meier-Scherling.
„Es ist viel
schöner mit anderen Geige
zu spielen als alleine. Man
den in einer Kühlkammer kalt gehalten
und dann im Ofen warm
gemacht. Das Obst ist auch sehr
frisch. Aber es wird nicht alles bei
Apetito bestellt, wie z.B. die Schnitzel,
das Obst, der Salat, die Getränke
und manch andere Sachen.
Die Wünsche von Kindern werden
aufgenommen, anschließend wird
mit dem Chef gesprochen und
manchmal wird die Küche entsprechend
angepasst. Sachen die keinem
schmecken kommen dann
nicht so oft.
Das Besteck, Teller, Gläser, die
Tabletts usw. werden in einer großen
Maschine gewaschen.

Im Chor singen
40 bis 50 Schüler, wobei
die weiblichen Stimmen
deutlich mehr sind. Auch
hier wirken Lehrer mit. Es
wird zu unterschiedlichen
Zeiten geprobt: Mittwochs
und Donnerstags in der 5.
Stunde sowie freitags in
der 6. Stunde. Die Mitglieder
von Chor und Orchester
kommen insbesondere
aus der deutschen, englischen
und französischen
Sprachsektion der Schule.
Chor und Orchester
treten zwei Mal im Jahr
auf; aber auch zu besonderen
Anlässen, wie z.B.
zu den Zehnjahresfeiern
der ESF oder zu den Abiturfeierlichkeiten
sind sie
hören. In diesem Schuljahr
gab es am 28. November
ein großes Jubiläumskonzert:
10 Jahre
Europäische Schule Frankfurt.
Es standen Musicalausschnitte
der letzten
zehn Jahre und Stücke
ISSUE 1
zum Projekt „Blau“ auf dem
Programm. Am Ende eins
Konzerts sammeln Schüler
Spenden. Die finanzielle
Unterstüzung dient vor allem
dem Ankauf von Instrumenten
und technischem Zubehör,
wie z.B. Kabeln oder
Scheinwerfern für die Auftritte.
Besondere Highlights
sind die mehrtägigen
Orchesterfahrten! Es geht
einmal im Jahr in die Landesmusikakademie
des
Landes Hessen nach Schlitz.
Dort werden meistens die
Konzerte vorbereitet. Chor
oder Orchester besuchen
aber auch andere Europäische
Schulen, z.B. in Brüssel.

A U SFLU G ZUR FRANKFURTER
BÖRSE LEANDRA NAGLER, S5F R
Am 29. November hatten wir,
die Eco-Schüler der S5, gemeinsam
mit Herr Oettli die
Gelegenheit, die Frankfurter
Börse zu besichtigen. Wir
trafen uns zunächst an der
Frankfurter Sparkasse. Sie
hat eine Abteilung für Öffentlichkeitsarbeit,
und der Mitarbeiter
der Sparkasse lieferte
uns eine gelungene Einführung
in das Thema Börse,
Aktien, Renditen und Dividenden.
Auch ein Frühstück
wurde uns serviert, und nach
dieser Stärkung sind wir zur
Wertpapierbörse am Börsenplatz
gelaufen. Dort hatten
wir zuerst einen kurzen Vortrag
über die Geschichte der
Börse. Das Jahr 1585 gilt als
Geburtsstunde des Handels
mit Wertpapieren am Main.
Damals hatten Frankfurter
Kaufleute zum ersten Mal
einheitliche Wechselkurse
festgelegt. Heute ist die
Frankfurter Börse neben
Tokio und London eine der
wichtigsten Börsen der
Welt .
Von der Besucher-
Plattform aus durften wir
schließlich die Börse sehen.
Man sah die Händler vor
vielen großen Monitoren
sitzen. Einige von ihnen
schauten fern, schliefen oder
lasen Zeitung. Ich hatte mir
das Tagesgeschäft viel hektischer
vorgestellt. Wir konnten
von der Plattform aus
auch die Fernseh-Teams
sehen, die sich auf die
nächsten Nachrichten vorbereiteten.
Ich fand diesen Ausflug
sehr interessant. Was mir
am meisten gefallen hat, war
die Börse so zu sehen, wie
man sie im Fernsehen auch
immer sehen kann.
T HE F I N N S A N D THE PR O J E C T BLUE
This is a summary of the
Finnish posters, which we
contributed to the ESF Anniversary
Project, The Project
Blue.
We worked on four different
themes during our L1
lessons. All the Finnish students
wanted to participate
in this project and there are
students having L1 Finnish
on four levels: S1, S2, S4
and S5.
The task of the student in
S1, Mikael Stahl (EN) was to
write a book review based on
Mr. Harri Istvan Mäki`s novel
“The secret of the Finnish
flag”. Mikael studied the
structure and the characters
of this story. Mr Mäki was
already a familiar person to
Mikael, because he visited
our school last year as our
author guest. Mr. Mäki organized
a workshop in order to
teach us how we could become
better writers.
Niko Lehtinen, S2/DE,
took part to Mikael`s project
by searching information
concerning the real (true)
history of the Finnish flag,
which is also called the “blue
-cross-flag”. Niko wanted to
show, how the historical
background of Finland can
be seen in the process of
creating a symbol for the
newborn nation.
Henri Lehtonen, S4/DE,
showed interest in the largest
lakes and the longest
rivers in Finland. His poster
tells us that there are about
190 000 lakes in Finland,
the lake Saimaa being the
largest one. On the map of
Finland, there are indeed a
lot of “blue areas”.
Daniel Isacsson, S4/EN,
wanted to work on something
delicious! This is why
his choice was the famous
Finnish chocolate, “Fazerin
Sininen”, “The Fazer`s Blue”.
The history of this company
as well as the story, how
Fazer found the recipe to
produce the “taste of Finland”,
they both describe the
remarkable political issues
which led to the independence
of Finland.
Inka Kärnä, S5/EN, Saana
Kärnä, S5/EN and Marko
Karila, S5/DE, concentrated
on six Finnish poets: Saima
Harmaja, Edith Södergran,
Heli Laaksonen, Heidi Liehu,
Eino Leino and Johan Ludwig
Runeberg. These literal geniuses
have written “blue
thoughts”, which have given
hope, happiness and joy for
millions of Finnish readers.
In addition to the exhibition
of the posters, we wanted
to show the audience
some famous Finnish design
in blue. We would like to
take this opportunity to
thank all parents who generously
borrowed personal
items to be shown in one of
the vitrines beside the main
entrance.
We hope that this summary
would help you to understand
the main ideas of
our contribution to the
“Project Blue” by offering
you a touch of some blue
elements in our home country!

"Point of View" is the students'

It’s that time of the
year again: the S5 classes
are in a frenzy. Why? Let me
answer that for you. They are
stressing out because of the
exams. For one whole week
they have nothing but exams.
"For us, the S5, this
is the first time ever we’re
going to sit in the aula to
write our exams. We will be
sitting in our assigned seats,
pen and pencil ready and it
will be completely silent while
we try to make sense of what
is on the desk in front of us.
"The way I see it,
they’re just bigger and more
important B-Tests, but knowing
that in just one week I’ll
be sitting in the aula trying to
pour my heart and soul into
my English exam is just a
little bit scary.
"Our past few weekends
have been filled with
nothing but studying. It is
tiring and I know, just like all
the other S5 students, that
I’ll be incredibly happy and
relieved when it’s all over.
"You should know
that it took a lot of work to
get there, but when you are
reading this, our exams will
be over and done with. Soon,
it will be time to sit back and
relax."

M O D E L UNITED NATIONS 2012

If I had been asked
what a Model United Nations
conference was this time last
year, I would have struggled to
come up with a halfway decent
answer. Today, after having
attended one, I could not only
explain what MUN is, but also
describe its procedures and
etiquette in detail.
Model United Nations
is a simulation of the United
Nations in which students
role-play various representatives
of the UN member states and
debate current issues. Every
year a group of around fifteen
S6 students from ESF represents
two countries at the Model
United Nations of Munich. This
year’s MUNoM took place from
Tuesday 13 th to Friday 16 th
November with ESF representing
India and Japan.
Although the actual
event takes place in mid-
November, preparation begins
months in advance, starting with
the application process at the
end of S5. Don’t let that put you
off - it’s not as daunting as it
may sound! Applying means
writing 150 words about why
you want to participate.
In S6, the real preparation
commences. The chosen
students – the ‘delegates’ – first
decide which country (in our
case either India or Japan) they
would like to represent and
which committee they would
On Tuesday the 20 th November,
we, the S2 English Religion
class held a bake sale in
the hopes that we could raise
enough money to buy a goat
for children in need. It turned
out that we raised 328.83€ -
more than we had ever imagined.
We thought that a cow, donkeys,
goats and chickens
would be a good gift for the
people in need. All of
these animals will provide
fertilizer for crops and will
like to be a part of. From this
point onwards, they attend a
weekly crash course in which
they learn everything from the
formatting and vocabulary rules
for draft resolutions, to the specific
phrases that must be used
during the debates.
On Monday 12 th
November, after school, the
delegates got the train from the
Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof to
Munich with Frau Drumm and
Mr Shellard. The next day we
were in the European Patent
Office, feeling very important
wearing our business attire in a
very important conference
room, listening to very important
people give speeches.
After lunch we ‘lobbied’ (wrote
resolutions) with other delegates
from our respective committees,
and were presented with a newspaper
composed by the
MUNoM press team. Wednesday
consisted of morning
‘lobbying’ and post-lunch debating
at the European School
of Munich. The power grid
decided to have a lazy day on
Thursday, which made us wait
twenty minutes for our train

help to supplement the family
income.
A mother of six, Maureen
Khomba in Malawi, explains
the difference a gift of a cow
has made to her family, “I sell
up to 16 litres of milk a day
and earn up to 12,000 Kwacha
(approx €35) in a month. I
believe that my children have
the prospect of a bright future
because I manage to send
them to school with the money
that I earn from selling
milk.”

the delegates from other
schools, we arrived very late
and had to do a forfeit. Being
the serious organisation it is,
MUNoM requires the delegates
who are late to do a forfeit in
the form of a song or a dance.
Needless to say, PSY’s
‘Gangnam Style’ was a popular
punishment. On Friday we returned
to the European Patent
Office for one final debate. At
lunch we discovered paparazzi
photos of the previous day’s
Gangnam Style forfeit in the
newspaper! Sadly we didn’t get
to stay until the end because we
had a four-hour train journey
back to Frankfurt ahead of us. It
was sad to say goodbye to
MUNoM and our newly-found
friends.
A word of advice to
anyone wishing to participate in
the future is to prepare early and
prepare well. That way you can
ensure that you’ll be able to
defend your country’s view
even when you don’t personally
agree with it. Attending MUN is
a very rewarding and enjoyable
experience and I would highly
recommend it because I believe
that there’s something for everyone
whether you’re interested
in nuclear weapons or endangered
animals.
Therefore we would like to
thank all the people who donated
cakes and money, as well as
all the students and teachers
who supported us.

Christmas. Christmas! Christmas?
Christmas is that one
time of the year when, quintessentially,
everyone gathers
cosily around the fireplace,
drinking some type of hot
drink, sharing stories from their
past Decembers and most
commonly, extending their
arms to hand over carefully
(and in some cases, hastily)
selected gifts. Its a mixed concoction
of family, friends, gifts,
good food, decorations, crisp
and snowy weather and most
importantly, love.
A lot of people, when asked,
will say that their favourite
aspect about Christmas is the
atmosphere. And it’s no wonder!
The mouth-watering
scents wafting through the air
as you meander past lusciously
decorated stores selling products
bursting with festivity, the
jolly tunes you hear as you
stroll through a beautifully
embellished street. Those
things along with walking
across a whitely blanketed city
with your family and friends,
exchanging gifts at the perfectly
timed moment. All of these
things gather together to cre-
spy and containing hidden references
to older films for classic
Bond fans to spot. A good balance
between action scenes and
plot twists, combined with an
elaboration of the characters'
backgrounds results in a fastpaced,
thrilling and extremely
witty cinematographic masterpiece.
Skyfall is the highest-grossing
Bond film of all time, reaching
ate that unbeatable Christmas
ambience we’ve all grown to
love so much.
But for many, this is not
what they associate with the
word “Christmas”. Most people
in our modern-day Western

S T Y L I S H? DEFINITELY, BUT
E A C H IN THEIR OW N WAY
What is remarkable about
the ESF fashion trend is that
each individual student approaches
fashion in a different
way. When we all rush
through the school corridors
during the five minute break,
it is clear that not all students
are "fashion victims"
who walk around in the most
expensive clothes, proudly
carrying a handbag with a

Nicoline from S5. She has a
unique, “different” style.
When I asked her how she
would describe it, she simply
answered “colourful and
happy”. She enjoys going for
the serious blazer look and
contrasting it by adding coloured
trousers to her outfit,
and finishes her look by
wearing a daring accessory
like her bow tie. She told me
that people are shocked and
ask her about the bowtie
when she wears it, and added
proudly that she enjoys
these reactions because “it
gets people out of their conventional
thinking”. Nicoline
loves stepping out of the
normal fashion comfort zone.
Furthermore, she explained
how her style reflects her
feelings. She is a girl who is
always happy and excited,
and tries to express this by
using her clothes. As a matter
of fact, her style fits her
joyful and carefree personali-
ty perfectly.
Nicoline is a great example
of someone who has her own
opinion and interpretation of
fashion. She does not spend
a lot of money on expensive
brands to impress people.
She is far from what could be
considered a "fashion victim".
On the contrary, she
creates her own fashion. She
does not feel the need to
impress anyone, and therefore,
wears exactly what she
likes.

Plusieurs classes de l’ESF ont rencontré
Marie-Aude Murail dans la
bibliothèque de l’école le mercredi 14
novembre 2012 de 13h40 à 15h10.
Le but de la rencontre était de poser
des questions à l’auteure à propos des
livres que nous avions étudiés, comme
par exemple : Le tueur à la cravate
, Simple , Mystère , La peur
de ma vie, etc.
Biographie : Marie-Aude Murail
est née le 6 mai 1954 au
Havre. Avec un père poète et
une mère journaliste, Marie-
Aude Murail est issue d'une
famille de littéraires, son frère
et sa soeur cadette sont également
écrivains. Par jalousie
envers sa sœur qui a publié un
livre avant elle, elle va se mettre
à écrire. Ses premiers romans
sont surtout destinés à des
femmes. Puis elle commence à
écrire pour les jeunes de 7 à 16
ans à partir de 1986. En vingt
années d'écriture, elle a publié
plus de soixante-dix livres. Ses
romans empruntent énormément
la forme du dialogue. Son
but est de séduire ses lecteurs
grâce à de l'émotion et de
l'amour.
La rencontre : Marie-Aude
Murail est une personne très
dynamique, touchante et amusante.
C’est une femme qui ne
tient pas en place, qui parle
avec ses mains et avec tout son
corps comme au théâtre !
Elle nous a beaucoup parlé de
sa vie personnelle pour nous
expliquer les situations ou les
personnages de ses romans. Je
me suis vite rendue compte que
derrière les pitreries qui nous
faisaient beaucoup rire, se cachait
une femme sensible et
émouvante qui m’a parfois fait
venir les larmes aux yeux. Par
exemple, lorsqu’elle nous a
raconté la douleur d’avoir perdu
sa maman ou de n’avoir pas
su dire « je t’aime » à son père.
Ou lorsqu’elle nous a raconté
cet épisode traumatisant dans
l’enfance de son mari qui lui a
inspiré l’histoire du Tueur à la
cravate.
J’ai aimé sa façon de me regarder
droit dans les yeux quand
elle nous parlait ou de me toucher
l’épaule pour me prendre à
témoin de ce qu’elle disait. Elle
m’a même pris mon stylo pour
nous montrer comment un
jour elle avait écrit sur son
poignet les initiales de son
auteur préféré : Charles Dickens.
Elle nous mettait à l’aise
en utilisant un langage très
familier, et nous donnait plein
de conseils et d’encouragements
pour notre future vie
d’adulte.
Je garde précieusement sa dédicace
: « Pour Léa, merci d’avoir
été si présente. »
J’ai adoré la rencontrer et espère
avoir l’occasion de rencontrer
d’autres auteurs aussi
fascinants qu’elle.
