<strong>REACH</strong> Guidance <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>European</strong> <strong>Steel</strong> <strong>Industry</strong><br />

RIPs: <strong>REACH</strong> Implementation Programmes are technical <strong>guidance</strong> documents which aim to provide<br />

<strong>the</strong> necessary tools/in<strong>for</strong>mation to ensure that <strong>the</strong> obligations and requirements of <strong>REACH</strong> are<br />

effectively administered.<br />

SDS: Safety Data Sheets are one of <strong>the</strong> primary tools in hazard communication. They provide <strong>the</strong> user<br />

with <strong>the</strong> in<strong>for</strong>mation needed to carry out a suitable risk assessment <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir application.<br />

SIEFs: Substance In<strong>for</strong>mation Exchange Fora, as outlined in Article 29 of <strong>the</strong> official text, allow groups<br />

of producers, importers and users of substances to join toge<strong>the</strong>r and register a substance between<br />

<strong>the</strong>m in a consortium.<br />

SVHC: Substances of very high concern are:<br />

- carcinogens (category 1 and 2)<br />

- mutagens (category 1 and 2)<br />

- substances which are toxic to reproduction (category 1 and 2)<br />

- persistent, bio-accumulative and toxic substances (PBTs),<br />

- very persistent and very bio-accumulative substances (vPvBs)<br />

- substances identified from scientific evidence as causing equivalent concern to those mentioned<br />

above, <strong>for</strong> example substances which disturb <strong>the</strong> hormone system (endocrine disruptors)<br />

Technical Dossier: Contains in<strong>for</strong>mation on <strong>the</strong> properties, uses and on <strong>the</strong> classification of a<br />

substance as well as <strong>guidance</strong> on its safe use.<br />

vPvB: Substances of very high concern that are very persistent (very difficult to break down), very bioaccumulative<br />

(very liable to accumulate in our bodies or in animals' bodies). Those substances are<br />

subject to authorisation.<br />
