SOLUTIONS

1. Introduction
Products that are printed using
Laser, Copier, Inkjet and Dot-Matrix
technologies can generally be divided
into two categories: A4 sheet fed
products and continuous fed products
(i.e. Electronic Data Processing). This
technical brochure will give you an
overview of our two product ranges,
plus general recommendations on
the usage of our products to optimise
results.
A4 format printing has experienced
tremendous growth over the last
few years, thanks in the main to
the growth in personal computers
and the installation of the various
allied printers that are very much a
part of life at work and at home. The
growth of colour inkjet printing is a
direct result of lower costs, increased
printer speeds and increased print
resolution. The comparative increase
in colour printers and the decline of
monochrome printers is due to higher
consumer expectations and a demand
for higher, professional quality print.
The demand for the processing and
application of variable data using
continuous printing techniques is still
high, particularly within the business
segment for tracking purposes. While
dot matrix technology is declining,
there is growth in the high-speed laser
printing. This requires products that
6. General recommendations for product handling
7. Specifi c technical product information
can be converted and printed reliably
at high speeds, taking into account
the critical fanfolding and refanfolding
processes.
Of course, the consumer’s expectation
of converting and print quality can
only be met by using consumables
that are compatible with the relevant
print technologies and with products
that continue to keep abreast with
the continuous development of these
printers.
Fasson is a key player in these
market segments, offering the widest
possible range and state of the art
products - thanks to intensive product
development, a well-equipped
applications laboratory, unique
patented technologies, and excellent
service platforms on our standard and
speciality products.
The ranges encompass both paper and
fi lmic facestocks. All products have
been developed to refl ect optimal print
resolution, ink and toner anchorage,
aesthetics and strength for processing.
The paper range contains uncoated
papers, suitable for basic printing,
through to high quality coated papers
which deliver the highest possible
print resolution for optimum print
performance. The fi lm range contains
a range of top coated fi lms with a
variety of fi nishes specifi cally designed
for either laser or inkjet printing.
All products are designed with
adhesives that offer the optimal
balance of tack and adhesion with low
adhesive bleed. Both permanent and
removable adhesives are available.
Our products are developed with
backing liners that ensure excellent
layfl at characteristics and good
product consistency, for optimal
conversion and problem-free
processing in modern printers.

2. The printing processes
Inkjet printing with Fasson
self-adhesive roll labelstock.
Self-adhesive materials for inkjet
printing are increasing in demand,
and are currently exhibiting a doubledigit
growth rate – a direct result of
the success of the A4 ‘desktop’ inkjet
printers. These printers dominate
the small offi ce market due to the
simplicity of operation and the
relatively low printer costs.
The inkjet printing process.
Inkjet printing delivers droplets of ink
from a nozzle directly onto a receiver.
Two types are available: continuous
inkjet (mainly used for direct
marketing) and drop-on-demand
(where a label is generally required).
Drop-on-demand printing can be
achieved by two different processes
- thermal inkjet and piezo inkjet.
Thermal inkjet is today’s most
common technology, used in 90% of
Printers installed in Western Europe
Monochrome Laser
Colour Inkjet
Monochrome Inkjet
Desktop Colour Laser
Colour Laser Copier/Printer
desktop inkjet printers because of
the relatively low printhead cost. This
process forms a bubble of ink, heated
through electrical pulses.
Piezo inkjet is challenging this
technology with the advantage of
greater dot control in terms of both
sizes and speed due to the technique
of dot formation.
The printhead is fi tted with a piezo
crystal, which deforms with electrical
impulse and creates and displaces
the bubble of ink. Due to the accuracy
of dot formation with this process, it
is possible to create photo images of
1200x1200 DPI - though printhead
costs are higher. Both processes
require a specially formulated top
coating to optimise colour print
receptivity, and for bar code printing.
Laser and copier printing
with Fasson self-adhesive roll
labelstock. Driven by the increased
sales of desktop printers for both the
home and the offi ce environments,
the laser copier market is one of
the fastest-growing segment in the
variable information printing market.
The technology’s ability to produce
high resolution and durable images
at high print speeds has also created
growth in industrial markets.
Typical applications include address
labels, pallet labels, pharmaceutical
labels and component labels in the
electrical and automotive industries.
The laser and copier printing
process. The electrophotographic
(toner transfer) processes include
laser copiers and photo copiers (LED),
which operate by similar principles: an
image is scanned by a light beam or
high-speed fl ash and refl ected onto a
photoconductor drum, which creates
a charge.
Laser printers differ from photocopiers
in that the image is sent digitally to
the photoconductor drum. In both,
however, toner particles are attracted
to the drum and then transferred and
fi xed onto the paper or fi lm receiver
using heat and pressure.
These are generally sheet-fed
printing processes, which are very
easy to use, but place high demands
on the labelstock to ensure clean
and effi cient feed through the
printers, which can have winding
transportation paths.

3. General information about
our products
The Fasson facestocks. Our
facestocks have been developed to
give optimal conversion and printer
performance. Some products are
multifunctional and can be used in all
print technologies, whilst others are
specifi cally designed for laser copier
or inkjet use. For more information,
please see Chapter 4, ‘Fasson Product
Ranges’.
Where high quality print resolution is
required for photorealistic prints, we
have developed specifi c top coated
papers and polyester fi lms to give
short drying time, and to ensure that
consumers’ expectations are met, not
only from the print perspective, but
also from the handling point of view.
The range of laser printable polyester
fi lms all utilise heat stabilised polyester
fi lms to reduce heat shrinkage and
subsequent post-printer curl. This is
normally negligible when printing die
cut or butt cut labels on A4 sheets.
Our EDP facestocks are made up
generally of uncoated papers that
give a good laser and dot matrix print.
Some papers like the ZigZag and the
Data 75 have been developed to give
good pre-printing with conventional
print technologies such as UV Flexo.
These products will also take a basic
Thermal Transfer print.
All our papers are made out of
environmental friendly ECF or TCF pulp.
The Fasson release liners.
Release liners are key in the
performance of self-adhesive
products. Our products are available
with release liners of various types
and basic weights, each designed for
specifi c applications.
For A4 fed products, the quality of the
release liner greatly contributes to the
layfl at of the product, and infl uences
its conversion and printing properties.
Generally, the lower weight liners
(45 and 55 grams) offer the correct
fl exibility to run on a wide set of A4
printers without problems. Here, long
grain conversion is recommended for
universal end-use.
Where small offi ce printers are used
with an s-curved path, short grain
conversion can be considered for use
from the paper cassette. Using the
manual feeder on a printer is less
critical, and is generally recommended
by the printer manufacturers.
For specifi c industrial uses in A4
fed products, the higher weight
liners such as AT 70 or HF 80 are
recommended. The higher rigidity
offers advantages in cases where the
sheets are perforated, and/or the
facepaper is diecut into many small
labels.
Specifi cally for the use on fi lmic
materials in laser printers, the HF 100
release liner offers optimal layfl at
performance.
For continuous fed EDP products,
layfl at is less critical, but high
strength and stiffness are required
for fanfolding. In general, glassine
liners are used for lower printing
speed applications, whilst 70 or 80
gram kraft liners are used for optimal
stability on high-speed laser printing.
For both A4 and continuous products,
our release levels have been
optimised for high-speed conversion,
ensuring prevention of label lift in
the printers, while enabling ease of
removal by the end user.

The Fasson adhesives. The
adhesive plays a key role in the quality
of A4 products. Firstly, the adhesive
should provide suffi cient tack to
adhere to a wide variety of substrates
(so called adhesion). In addition, the
adhesive should adhere over a wide
temperature range. Along with good
adhesion, it is extremely important
to have the right internal strength (so
called cohesion) to ensure low oozing
of the adhesive in a slit roll, as well
as good resistance of the adhesive
to fl ow in the hot fusion processes in
a laser or copier printer. All Fasson
adhesives have been formulated to
give the right balance of all these
properties.
For A4 products where bleeding
and printer pollution are extremely
important, we offer S2012HT and
S2012HTC. S2012HT is a good general
purpose adhesive. However, if a
higher adhesion level is required,
S2012HTC can be used (for this
adhesive, we recommend stripping
the products).
Where a removable adhesive is
required, there is the additional
requirement of excellent anchorage
to the facestock and long term
removability, again to a wide range
of substrates. We achieve this by
using patented technology to ensure
that, with the LR2 adhesive, even
the demands imposed by the most
diffi cult applications can be met.
The LR2 based products are however
not recommended for use on curved,
uneven and cylindrical substrates.
For use on recycled cardboard, we
would propose to do preliminary
application testing fi rst.
For EDP products, adhesive bleed
is not normally as critical as for A4
fed products. Here, we offer the
well-established S2000N adhesive,
which is used in our Industrial Paper
and Thermal ranges. The adhesive
holds an optimal balance between
conversion speed, bleeding and
adhesion.

5. Fasson applications
laboratory
Avery Dennison Roll Materials Europe
has an extensive R&D department
working in close co-operation with
both its counterpart in North America
and the corporate Avery Research
Center, continually striving to bring
innovations and improvements into
the market. An exciting and key
facilitator in this process is our recently
refurbished applications Laboratory.
Here, we have a collection of the
latest inkjet, laser and copier printers
in the market, from the major OEMs.
Working with Hewlett-Packard, Canon,
Epson, Lexmark, Brother and Kyocera
printers, we can fully evaluate each
new or existing product for its
performance across a wide set of
printers using a standard test protocol.
The standard test protocol contains a
number of print related tests, as well
as runnability tests on every printer.
Typical print quality tests are
resolution, feathering, toner
anchorage, print density, colour-tocolour
bleed, dry time, light fastness,
smear fastness, strike / show through,
cockle, blocking and water fastness.
Concerning runnability on printers, we
typically look for jamming, misfeeds,
multiple feeds, skewing, registration,
label lift, bent corners, wrinkles and
drum pollution.
Besides printer testing, specifi c testing
can be done on CD-ROMs and DVDs.
Here too, we have a standard test
protocol in which we test the
suitability of materials for CD-ROM
labelling, specifi cally concerning
data-loss.

The most obvious requirements are
for good layfl at and low adhesive
bleed. We believe that with our
careful choice of raw materials (i.e.
facestocks, liner, and adhesives) allied
to our manufacturing capabilities,
we can provide materials which
give trouble-free conversion to the
converter and problem-free printing
for the end user.
However, there are certain
recommendations we would like to
pass on to ensure that this is indeed
the case.
Layfl at. There are three main aspects
to layfl at: moisture curl, hang, and
core memory.
If moisture curl is seen on an A4
sheet, it appears as curl in the cross
direction (assuming the paper has
been converted long grain). This is
minimised during our process by
ensuring that the moisture content
of the paper face and liner are in
equilibrium with each other. Our
internal QA checks ensure that
moisture curl on Fasson products is
minimized.
6. General recommendations for product handling
Especially for A4 product conversion, the proper
handling of products is one of the most critical issues in
pressure sensitive labelling.
To avoid moisture curl, we strongly
recommend that material is kept in its
original wrappings until it is needed
for conversion and stored within
the range 40 - 60 % RH, and at a
temperature between 18 - 23°C. This
is particularly relevant when handling/
converting fi lmic facestocks.
“Hang” appears on an A4 sheet
as curl in the machine direction
(again, assuming the paper has
been converted long grain). This
is minimised again in our process
by ensuring that both the face and
liner are laminated together at the
same rate, and that there has been
no tension introduced into the
laminate as a result. Our internal QA
checks ensure that “hang” on Fasson
products is minimized.
It is possible, particularly with coated
and more rigid products, that a certain
degree of “core memory” is evident
near the core. This can be reduced
using de-curl bars, or using thick
walled cores.
Adhesive Bleed. Adhesive bleed/
edge ooze can have a negative effect
on printer performance, especially
laser and copier printers, due to the
temperatures involved during the
printing process. Commonly it causes
printer jams, or contamination of the
printer drum. The range of Fasson
adhesives has been specifi cally
designed to have low edge ooze,
and work well with most common A4
conversion methods. That said, we
would still recommend edge stripping,
or at the very least edge slitting during
conversion. If net width conversion
is preferred, we would strongly
recommend running a test trial fi rst.
