Persistent challenges<br />
A turbulent year has just <strong>com</strong>e to a close, with a new year lying ahead of us. The most important<br />
question for the <strong>European</strong> <strong>coatings</strong> industry: Is the worst already behind us, or will the<br />
challenges be<strong>com</strong>e even harder?<br />
As part of our annual review and forecast, we asked a market expert to give his assessment of<br />
the paint industry’s future. “Coating manufacturers have to re-think their long-term positioning,”<br />
Dr. Tobias Lewe of A.T. Kearney, re<strong>com</strong>mends (page 11).<br />
We also wanted to know how the <strong>coatings</strong> manufacturers have coped with a very difficult<br />
year and what expectations they have for 2010. The overall perception is that in the end there<br />
might be even more challenges to be surmounted. Read our annual survey from page 14.<br />
On the technical side, the future of wood <strong>coatings</strong> is in the focus of this issue. According to<br />
Dr. Claudia Philipp, environmental legislation and economic constraints will strongly influence<br />
research and development priorities (page 18).<br />
