WORDS FROM THE Editor
Mohd Firdaus Rizwan, Chief Editor
At any higher institution
such as UNIMAS, grouses
or dissatisfactions among
students are common.
Their expressions of
dissatisfaction are mostly
put on papers. In this
edition of VARSITY
LIFE, the issues
regarding the matric card
and poor Wi-Fi connection
dissatisfied certain groups
of students who refused to
compliance to the given
rule that is imposed by the
administration’s side.
When it comes to assignments, the software called SPSS is often
considered a pain in the neck among the students when their
coursework involve statistical analyses. The latest technology that
hits the market, smartphones however manage to lessen the
student’s burden in their coursework. Nevertheless, the device that
is equipped with useful apps has also bad sides once it is misused.
Feeling a romantic vibe in you? Then, head on to our very own Love
Bridge together with your loved ones as we spice up the topic
between love affection and chasing our ambitions. Meanwhile,
Korean stars that are popular with the K-Pop culture have hit the
Malaysian entertainment market by storm. Such culture has
enormous influence on the youngsters especially UNIMAS students,
be it in fashion, dance and even hairstyles. That’s very ‘astonishing’.
I truly hope that the culture will fade soon. It’s time for us,
Malaysians to be proud of our own multiracial cultures and keep to
the spirit of 1Malaysia. Till then, have a pleasant read!!
Do you think you are the HOTTEST in campus? Now we bring you a glamorous
trend and style that we can see among the students. Girls look very gorgeous whilst guys
act very smart like models when going to class or everywhere around the campus.
4
K - POP
The K-Pop style that
spreads among students is the
most up-to date fashion. They
become obsessed with this K-
Pop phenomenon because it is
considered as trendy and
fashionable. Everyone is
expecting to look good and
attractive.
They emulate the
Korean superstar in their
dressings because they are
crazy of becoming like their
Korean idols such as
BIGBANG, 2PM, Girls
Generation, Super Junior and
a few to mention. Mostly girls
wear either blouse made from
satin fabric or long dresses
and jumpsuits in the campus,
while the guys wear tight
cutting shirts that reveals their
body shape. The most famous
wear in the campus is skinny
jeans with colourful colours
and a quarter skinny jeans. In
addition, they also wear faded
jeans in blue, grey and
greenish colours. Furthermore,
some prefer to stick to either
long or third quarter skirts.
Craze Spreads in UNIMAS!
The most favourite style among guys in the campus is hairstyle. The most popular
style of haircut is none other than PSY, a Korean superstar famous for his horse-riding
dance in “Gangnam Style”. The ladies are no exception. The influence of Korean culture
has inspired young ladies to emulate their Korean idols from head-to-toe. The choices of
bright and soft colours are the favourite among the ladies, not forgetting the polka dot
that is coming back in style.
The K-Pop craze is spreading fast in UNIMAS campus. Now, the trend is more
towards Korean’s style but remember never forget our Malaysian identity.
UNIMAS is a Place for Affection
or Ambition?
Affection sounds interesting right? It is all is about love and
devotion. Of course, everybody wants to be loved by somebody.
Well, how about the aspiration or ambition as a student in a campus?
Affection and ambition have become a trend that has been sprouting
all over the campus. Do you know that UNIMAS has become ‘a
breeding ground’ for young couples here – The Love Bridge? You can
check it out and trust me – ‘Love is in the air’, as sung in the lyric of a
song. The flattery words of the boys can easily captured the hearts of
naive girls. Well, as students, bear in mind that we are here to chase
after our ambitions.
Sacrifices come along the way. In pursuit of
affection, students must put ambition at the
first place. That is why time management is
another important factor – the weight should
be more towards our studies that is our final
goal in achieving our ambition. Affection or
simply love is secondary. If you fail in your
love line, the sun still shines on you. If you
fail to achieve your ambitions, you will face
uncertainties in the future. The clock is
ticking fast. If you are smart, you can grab
both at a time.
By Zaihan & Zarina
Affection and ambition are just like two sides of
the same coin. No doubt, it is equally good if you
know how to divide between your time and
commitment between love and ambition. The
couples tend to be more likely on the love’s track
rather than racing for the ambitions. If two things
can run along together smoothly, it will be fine.
Can we take up the challenge of having two
different tasks done at the same time. Does love
affect or inspire our ambition? A sensible person
could answer this challenge.
“Love or ambition”
By Nur Amira Ashikin & Intan Mariana
‘Inconvenient’ is the expression
louded by the students regarding the matric
card system. Plenty of unreasonable excuses
are given just to avoid the use of matric card.
This disatisfaction is becoming a dissent
among UNIMAS’s students. Matric card is
an identification card that has to be worn by
every student in UNIMAS as a part of
discipline and security.
This card is very important to every
student in order to access of the facilities in the
university such as in the library (CAIS). But
somehow, because of the attitude of some
students, they tend to overlook the important
role of this matric card.
Most students feel awkward when wearing their matric cards
around their neck. They find wearing it is uncomfortable and too rigid.
Wearing a suspended matric card around their neck seems to be
burdensome. The prevailing mentality among the UNIMAS students is that
the card should be worn only when needed (but not at all times). No matter
what measures are imposed on the students to comply wearing the rule of
matric card all the times in the campus, it appears ineffective.
The students show high compliance wearing the
tag when entering CAIS and lecture halls. Apart
from that, the students neglect wearing the tag. To
the students, they can simply memorise their
matric card number. This attitude becomes a trend
among the students. There seemed to be no
effective solution to this problem.
Be open-minded!
WEAR YOUR MATRIC CARD and that is just a
simple thing to do as a truly
UNIMAS-ian!
A touch that
An article by Mohd Firdaus Rizwan & Vaanmathi Nageswaran
Hey, do you miss your loved ones especially those
who are distance apart? Writing a letter, that was so 30
years ago! Luckily, a new technology provides a welcome
relief for us to connect with just one touch on the screen
and that gadget is a SMARTPHONE.
Having a smart phone provides ‘life’ to the
students. Besides connecting us with friends, smart phone is
a necessity as it acts as part-and-parcel of campus life. It’s
considered trendy to have a smartphone and affordable
moreover with the government’s RM200 rebates on the
smartphones.
With smartphone, you can access the Internet
connection via Wi-Fi at anytime, any place. In fact, Wi-Fi
service in UNIMAS is free and you can enjoy net-surfing in
the campus without a hitch. With an Internet connection,
the students have virtually most of the informations they
read at their fingertips, ranging from the current issues and
news all over the world. You can even read your lecture
notes from MORPHEUS instantly without the need of a
laptop and that’s the wonder of having smartphones.
Smartphones are also a heaven to Facebook and Twitter
aficionados, whereby the students can socialise with
people having the same interest as them. The impact of
this medium is simply amazing.
10
CONNECTS
On the contrary, the ‘overdose’ of smartphones
among students will lead to their negligence in their
studies. With more than 1000 apps such as games and
chats that can be installed, you will simply be obsessed. In
fact, cranking up a loud volume on the smartphones may
affect brain and memory power of the user.
The technology is here, knocking on our doors
and that refers to smartphones too. Smartphone is
considered a bridge that brings wonders to the UNIMAS
students with just a touch of a finger.
It’s a big headache as quoted from the final year students when facing
with ‘Statistical Product and Service Solutions’ or simply known as SPSS. It’s a
frequent problem faced by the students doing the Final Year Project (FYP). Don’t
you think that SPSS can be annoying, especially to the final year students who is
doing their FYP? Well, you are not alone in facing this kind of problem. Some may
agree that it is easier to use SPSS compared to other software. But to others who
does not even understand the benefits of SPSS may feel miserable. Nevertheless, the
usages of SPSS are unavoidable as it provides important data for the final year
students’ projects. Is there any alternative to SPSS? The answer is ‘NO’ for the
students who are doing in quantitative methods. There’s must be the reasons this
kind of situation happened. There are no specific classes to learn this thing. The
managements (refers to the University) did not apply this subject into the
curriculum. Then, mostly, this subject only really applies during students doing their
Final Year Project. And then FYP normally did during the final year of studies.
14
So, we can considered it as late because the final year students are force to
do the two big things, learning SPSS in short time and struggling to finish
their FYP. Actually, to solve this problem, some solutions are required to
address this crucial problem that must be collected earlier. First, SPSS
must be introduced to the first year students so that they get to learn and
know about SPSS. In fact, the subject Statistics taught in all faculties in
UNIMAS requires the usage of SPSS. Nevertheless, the problem cropped
up when it comes to group assignments because some students are making
lame excuses of their ignorance in SPSS and hands off, doing nothing. In
other word, they are free riders that refuse to do their part with an excuse
of lack of expertise in this field. As a consequence, the seniors should act
as mentors to guide their juniors how to operate the software. However, not
all seniors are able to give a lending hand as they are also burdened with
their assignments and projects. To conclude, the best solution is to learn
and master it as one saying ‘If there is a will, there is a way’.
Is the Wi-Fi connection in Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) bothering you lately
especially when you want to get some information from the Internet to do your
assignments? Well, you are not alone! In fact, every semester, there will always be many
students complaining about the same problems all over again. There are certain
procedures and guidelines that the students have to follow before accessing the Internet
in the campus. For instance, students have to key in their matric numbers and passwords
before logging in. After you are logged in, then a notification page appears telling you
that you have to agree with the policy given before you can continue to surf.
Therefore, surfing the Net in the campus can be tedious and arbituous. In fact, the
red tape on several websites such as Youtube and Facebook has made the students’
assignments more difficult to those who live outside the campus . Facebook is their only
means of group discussion. There are also students who are wiling to spend around
RM200-300 a month to subscribe a mobile broadband because they claim that the
connection speed of broadband service is faster than Wi-Fi. In fact, many turned to USB
modem when it comes to downloading their favourite shows.Internet facilities located in
the campus should be utilised to encourage the usage of Internet not only by students
but also the staff within the campus. In addition, more routers should be installed in all
the buildings throughout the campus to provide more Internet access points to the
students.
UNIMAS need to ensure that their campus networks are appropriately resourced.
Furthermore, expenditure for ongoing technical upgrade in campus networks is best
treated as a budget expense on an annual basis. UNIMAS should consider acquiring their
own fibre infrastructure between their Local Area Network(s) and the point(s) of
presence of key service and/or infrastructure providers, if necessary by commissioning its
construction.
