what are they doing now? Iona Halliday (2000) has always been passionate about Athletics. Iona’s tertiary studies began with a Certificate IV in Fitness from Swinburne (TAFE), Victoria and in 2008 graduated from Deakin University, Melbourne, with a Bachelor of Applied Science (in Sports Coaching). In 2009 Iona gained a Post Graduate Scholarship at the Australian Institute of Sport, Canberra, ACT in the Physiology Department as a Quality Assurance Officer. She was offered a position in October of that same year as a member of the support staff for the Australian Women’s Skeleton Team competing in the Winter Olympics. As a support staff member Iona and the team travelled overseas to compete in the World Cup series in order for the athletes to qualify for the Winter Olympics in Whistler, Canada, in February, 2010. For the World Cup competitions the team travelled to the USA, Whistler, Canada, Italy, Germany and Switzerland. Iona had to film, edit and digitally record performances, their splits and those of the competing nations and hand these results to the coaches as well as keeping in touch with the AIS in Canberra. Another part of her job was to drive the team to various venues when necessary. After returning from overseas, in early 2010, Iona is again enjoying working at the AIS. This time with the Australian Rowing Team, conducting their performance tests and laboratory reports amongst many other interesting procedures. Due to the Federal Government’s new administration for elite sport, Iona is now waiting to see if her position becomes more permanent. Luke Altmann (1997) featured in the Adelaide ‘Advertiser’ in August as a composer in the composers’ collective called ‘The Firm’. Since 2000 he has volunteered at Radio Adelaide, presenting Continuum - Modern Classics and Ear to the Ground with fellow Adelaidean composers Grahame Dudley and David Lang. As a composer he has written regularly since 2002 for The Firm. From 2005 to 2009 he ran De la Catessen, an independent inner city venue dedicated to the performance of new and experimental music. Anne Janssen (1998, nee Cawrse), a former music teacher at Faith, has just writen a new work which is being performed by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra in October as part of the ASO Masters series. Natalie Williams (1994) is currently in Bloomington, Indiana completing her PhD in Composition Studies and had one of her early works performed at the 2009 Barossa Valley Vintage Festival. She is currently composing a new Baroque chamber work for its premiere performance at a Langmeil Twilight concert as part of the 2011 Vintage Festival. Natalie is building an interntional reputation in both the US and Europe. We may see her at school at the end of the year to present the Jan Williams Memorial Scholarship in Music to a Senior Faith music student. Eleanor Blythman (1998) has taken a role in the current production of ‘Phantom of the Opera’ in London. She is very happy to be making her West End debut in Phantom and thanks her friends and family for their continued support. Eleanor trained at the Elder Conservatorium of Music before gaining a Bachelor of Music in classical voice performance (Hons), followed by a graduate diploma in singing from the Royal College of Music, London. Faith has been proud to see Eleanor’s career progress through her talent and dedication. Melanie Radke (1999) is now a fulltime violinist in the WA Symphony Orchestra and her sister, Hayley Radke (2001), has a full time role as flautist with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. Melissa Jaunay (2000) and Philip Jaunay (2003) are theatre technicians in Melbourne where they have been working on the show ‘Jersey Boys’. The show closed at the end of July, and Philip has now travelled to Sydney with the show for its Sydney season (12 months). Melissa will remain in Melbourne and her next show will be the season of ‘Hairspray’.
V.E.T. news Four students from our class of 2009 have all received an Australian Vocational Student Prize in recognition of achieving exceptional skills and commitment during their Year 12 studies. Lachlan Baker (ASBA Diesel Mechanic, shown above left) has rolled over to a full time Apprenticeship at Kuchel Contractors. Dale Giersch (ASBA Engineering, shown at left) has rolled over to a full time Apprenticeship at Shannon Welding & Fabrication Services. Caitlin Schubert (Hospitality Training at TafeSA together with work placement program, shown at right) has travelled overseas and gained employment locally at the Barossa Novotel and Melton Wines. Adele Kroschel (Aged Care Training at TafeSA together with work placement program, below right) continues to study at TAFE for her Diploma of Nursing while working part time at the Tanunda Lutheran Homes. Faith School is very proud of their efforts. Another student from our class of 2009, Vaughan Scott-Hoy, received 20 out of 20 for his Music Engineering course through VET. He was awarded with his certificate at Government House. Well done Vaughan! marriages Jasmine Plush (2003) and Brandon Kurtz were married on October 10th 2009 at the Bethany Lutheran Church followed by a reception in the Signature Cellars at Yalumba Winery. The Bridal party included former students Jessica Plush (2001) and Alex Hoffmann (2003). They honeymooned in America and the Carribean and now reside in Nuriootpa. Jasmine is the Manager of Angaston Hotel and the Wanera Wine Bar and Restaurant. Louise Jaunay (2002) and Robert Brumfield (2002) married on 6th March this year. In their wedding party Klaus Preusker (2002), Philip Jaunay (2003), Daniel Keller (2002), Scott Gerhardy (2002), Travis Sickerdick (2002), Melissa Jaunay (2000), Lori McClelland (2002), and Sarah Weaver (2002) were all old scholars (in fact the whole wedding seemed like a Faith re-union as many of the guests were old scholars too!) The wedding gown and the five bridesmaid’s dresses were made by the bride’s mother (Faith Textiles Teacher), Lorraine Jaunay. Louise and Robert now live in Williamstown. Louise is an environmental consultant working for Rural Solutions, and Robert works for the Yalumba winery. Congratulations! exchanges Katie Pence and Miranda Benson (Year 10) joined us in Term 1 from Long Island Lutheran High in New York. Nao Kurihara (Year 10) became a long term exchange student at Faith, from Seibo Gakuen in Japan. She will stay in Australia until January. The girls are pictured together at far left. Stephanie Dengler (at centre left, Year 10) arrived for a short exchange for Term 3 from Germany. Phillip Sederstrom (at left, Year 11) joined us from Sweden in Term 3 for a 12 month exchange through Rotary.
