The scholarship enables students to explore the artistic/cultural achievements of other
nations and can be used to support study from a practical and/or theoretical perspective.
It is intended to help students who would not normally be able to undertake such a
programme of study, but is NOT intended to fund a specific course requirement such as a
placement, study trip or dissertation.
How much is the scholarship for?
The total amount allocated in any one year will not normally exceed £5,000 and the
maximum amount normally awarded to any one student is £1,250. As such four to six
awards are usually made each year.
Background
This scholarship, bestowed by Mrs D Zweig in 1994, was established to commemorate
the life of her husband, Dr Ferdynand Zweig. Dr Zweig was born in Krakow, Poland in
1896.
He studied law and economics at the universities of Krakow and Vienna and graduated as
Doctor in Law at the University of Krakow. He worked at the Central Statistical Office in
Warsaw, was later called to the Bar, and was also active as a journalist. In September
1939 he escaped across the Polish-Romanian frontier and in 1940 was evacuated from
France. In Britain he acted as an economic adviser to General Sikorski and was also a
lecturer to the wartime Polish Faculty of Law at the University of Oxford.
After the war Dr Zweig devoted himself to the study of the British working class. His
books include The British Worker, The Planning of Free Societies and Economic Ideas -
A Study of Historical Perspectives. In recognition of his research he was appointed
Visiting Professor at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem. Towards the end of his academic
career Dr Zweig became a prolific painter and sculptor.
Application process
Students wishing to be considered for the scholarship must submit a completed
application form outlining their objectives, travel itinerary, anticipated costs and predicted
outcomes. Applications must also be accompanied by a supporting academic statement,
completed by the applicant’s course leader, tutor, or research supervisor. Original pieces
the outcome of their application by letter following the panel’s decision. This is likely to be
in early April 2013. Recipients of the scholarship will be announced at the annual
graduation ceremonies and it is a condition of the scholarship that recipients contribute to
the Zweig exhibition and donate a record or memento of their journey to the Zweig
Archive in the University library.
