The Road to New Beginnings PrograMs & serVices The Family Tree provides more than 15,000 parents, children and caregivers each year with a continuum of best practice and evidence-based programs to families. Programs are designed to provide families with the child rearing and communication skills they need to raise healthy children and prevent child abuse and neglect. Programs are available in two service areas — Family Education and Support, and Community Services. Family education and support services are direct service programs delivered in the Baltimore Metropolitan region and Prince George’s County to families in the home, school, and community. • Parenting education - Parent Training Classes - Family Guidance Services - Family Life Workshops • Home Visitation - PATH (Parent Aide in The Home) - Healthy Families (for at risk expectant/ new mothers) • child and Youth Development Programs - Children’s Nurturing Program - Youth Advocacy Program community services are statewide and designed to inform the community, raise awareness, and to provide the parenting community with information, referrals and support. • Parents anonymous ® support groups for parents and caregivers • 24-hour, statewide Parenting HelpLine for callers in crisis • community education & outreach • Parent Leadership Training & support 2 | The Family Tree Annual report 2011-2012 AN OPEN MiND “ At the beginning, I was lost in so much anger, too blind to accept the help that was given and ignoring all generosity. But there’s a “family of trees” waiting to help me! i can say just for me this is a new beginning. a beginning of success.” JAMAL, AGE 17 YOUTH ADvOCACY PrOGrAM, BALTiMOrE CiTY We are proud of the impact we are having on Maryland’s families. Here are some highlights: • 84% of families did not experience subsequent referrals to Child Protective Services.* • 94% of caregivers did not experience a child removal from the home.* • Parent’s knowledge and attitudes about child rearing significantly improved after completing the parenting program.* • 86% of parents who attended Parents Anonymous ® support groups reduce their stress and learn new coping methods. * Data from the University of Maryland, ruth H. Young Center for Families and Children’s longitudinal study on The Family Tree’s Positive Parenting Program. Partnerships At Work enoUgH aBUse caMPaign The Family Tree, along with Honorary Chair First Lady Katie O’Malley and 21 outstanding leaders representing the private and public sectors, facilitated a statewide partnership to begin the enough abuse campaign to end child sexual abuse in Maryland. This campaign identified three communities in Baltimore City, Talbot and Worcester County in which to pilot an effective child sexual abuse prevention campaign that began in Massachusetts. Thus far, we have trained close to 500 individuals to advance this effort. Our achievements also include training staff in seven Juvenile Services’ facilities in the identification and reporting of child sexual abuse. YoUTH aDVocacY PrograM The Family Tree is a partner in the Maryland Department of Juvenile (DJS) Services’ Continuum of Opportunity reentry Program & Services (COrPS) initiative in Baltimore City, providing a Youth advocacy Program. The COrPS initiative began in 2011 with 50 youth being served, but grew rapidly to incorporate 140 youth (14 and older) throughout Baltimore City, all returning from placements in juvenile facilities or on probation. The Youth Advocacy Program staff, in coordination with DJS Case Managers, provide the youth with the necessary support to develop a personal plan for achieving their education, employment and community service goals. Advocates help by cultivating family involvement and having personal contact with youth at home, at school, and on the job.
BaLTiMore VisiTaTion cenTer The Family Tree is the host of the Baltimore city Visitation center. The Mayor’s Office on Criminal Justice received a grant from the Office on violence Against Women and the Governor’s Office of Crime Control and Prevention to start this new center for non-custodial parents at The Family Tree’s Sherman Family Center. it will provide a safe location at which parents may exchange custody of children (or non custodial parents may visit children) in an abuse-free environment that promotes healthy interaction and serves as an access point for referring families to additional supportive services. HeaLTHY FaMiLies in 2012, The Family Tree became a provisional site in Baltimore City for Healthy Families america (HFa), one of 20 sites across Maryland and nearly 400 in the United States. Healthy WaLK For MarYLanD”s cHiLDren Families America is a nationally recognized evidence-based home visiting model designed for overburdened families at-risk for adverse childhood experiences, including child maltreatment. 30 years of research has demonstrated that moms and babies participating in regular home visits are more likely to have healthy babies and to raise them free of abuse. sTanD For MarYLanD’s cHiLDren Our stand For Maryland’s children public engagement effort is designed to demonstrate the role we all play in building strong families. Each year, we partner with nonprofits, businesses, schools, community groups, day care providers, even entire towns — building pinwheel gardens and distributing information on strong families. New supporters include two-time Emmy Award winning actress Julie Bowen of the hit Tv show, Modern Family. Look for more pinwheel gardens around the state in 2013! Our 3rd Annual Brent a. rosenberg Walk For Maryland’s children and Family Fair broke all records in October, 2012 with 100 teams and over 800 walkers. Thanks to our partners our attendance doubled from 2011 and we were able to create an event for families unlike any other in Baltimore. This FrEE event is designed to provide families an opportunity to spend quality time together while demonstrating their commitment to ending child abuse in Maryland. During the fair, over 20 child and family serving nonprofit partners provided information and give-aways. Guests also enjoyed ravens football clinics and special appearances by Poe and the ravens cheerleaders. The Family Tree Annual report 2011-2012 | 3
