Looking to the Future Ten Years in THe sHerMan FaMiLY cenTer it’s hard to believe The Family Tree is celebrating a decade at its headquarters — The Sherman Family Center — on Charles Street in Baltimore. Since then, this incredible building has become known for restoring hope to thousands of parents and children each year. Continued support from local foundations have allowed us to invest in the needed upgrades to our building, including some infrastructure improvements, a child’s bathroom, and new security and phone systems to better serve our clients. cLinicaL researcH TriaL research is an important component of our work — guiding our programs and services. For the past four years, we have been partnering with the ruth H. Young Center for Families and Children at the University of Maryland, to evaluate our programs. This year, we are wrapping up our first Clinical Study examining parent engagement in our parenting education classes. This study compares our 10-week Positive Parenting Program with an enhanced version that includes electronic class reminders. Preliminary data shows that participants who receive the enhanced program have higher completion rates than non-participants. We’re excited about these early findings and the promise they hold for the future. aDVocacY in annaPoLis With the help of a new partner — Harris Jones and Malone, LLC — The Family Tree ventured into new legislative territory this year during the General Assembly’s session. We hope to be a resource for elected officials on issues relating to children, like child abuse and neglect and child protection. As part of this effort, The Family Tree held its first successful “Lobbying Day” in Annapolis in January 2012 with 22 staff members visiting over 20 elected officials to create awareness of the agency and speak to what The Family Tree is doing to help prevent child abuse and neglect in their districts. The Family Tree is planning another visit to Annapolis in 2013. conTinUing oUr gooD WorK in 2012, The Family Tree, and staff member Sherman Minor, were recognized by Howard County’s most prestigious annual program award for our MENS Program, which serves fathers and their children. Also, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Commissioner’s Award for outstanding leadership and service in the prevention of child abuse and neglect was awarded to our Executive Director, Patricia K. Cronin. Lastly, we began a young professionals group, known as the Next Generation Network, to foster younger volunteers and donors. “Although no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.” 4 | The Family Tree Annual report 2011-2012 —Carl Bard A BriGHT FUTUrE “ I knew my anger was ruining my future. My rage led to the failure of two marriages, joblessness and brushes with the law. But no amount of counseling or intensive rehabilitation ever kept me away from trouble for long. Finally, my probation officer enrolled me into The Family Tree’s ten-week program. It helped me change my attitude and develop better ways of dealing with my problems. I kept my weekly sessions and worked hard on assignments to help me cope with my anger. There has been such a difference in my life. I now have a stable job and see my son regularly.
