Brandt; US-USSR meeting will affect troop reductions BONN, Germany (AP ) — Chancellor Willy Brandt says the future of East-West talks on troop reductions in Europe depends in a large respect on next month's meeting between President Nixon and the Soviet Union's Leonid I. Brezhnev. In an interview with The Associated Press, the West German government chief also predicted that world monetary reform will triumph over the currency unrest that is pushing the dollar down and sending the price of gold up. Brandt discussed these and other issues in an interview in his office Wednesday on the condition that it be released Thursday. He also said he made progress on Berlin in his talks with Soviet Communist party chief Brezhnev. He added that this would clear the way for inclusion in the future of the status of West Berlin in cooperation agreements between West Germany and the Soviet Union . Brezhnev and Brandt agreed Monday that Berlin should not be a stumbling block to the development of German-Soviet ties. They agreed that the 1971 four power Berlin pact was essential to the relaxation of tensions in cenr tral Europe. The pact, signed by the United States, Britain, France and the Soviet Union as World War II victors, recognizes non-political ties between West Berlin and Bonn, but it underscores that the Western sector is part of the, old German capital and not a part of West Germany. Thus it cannot be ruled by Bonn. On the troops reduction issue, Brandt said the conferences with Brezhnev left him with the impression that the Kremlin would agree to continue with preparations for the talks but would not begin them until after the conference on European security in Helsinki, Finland . Ford to meet demands BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Ford Motor Co., agreeing to terrorists' pay-or-die extortion demands, said Thursday it would start distributing $1 million in aid this week to slum children , hospitals and poor people. Members of the leftist People's Revolutionary Army shot and wounded two Ford officials Monday and the next day threatened to kill or kidnap Ford executives in Argentina unless protection money was paid. The company bowed to the demand Wednesday, then went into telephone negotiations with the Trotskyite guerrillas. In addition to giving away medicine, hospital equipment, ambulances and school supplies, Ford agreed to distribute powdered milk, chocolate and cocoa to slum children. Ford announced Thursday at its international headquarters in Dearborn, Mich., that the company would donate $200,000 in medicine to the Children's Hospital of Buenos Aires and $200,000 in instruments to the Children 's Hospital at Catamarca. Twenty-two ambulances will be distributed throughout Argentina, one for each province, the company said. About $180,000 in food will be distributed among poor areas of the capital, Buenos Aires, and $300,000 in school supplies will be provided for needy children in the greater Buenos Aires area.
