'Hitler': 'Megalomania turns into melodrama'

The skull of Hitler's aide Martin
Bormann. exhumed earlier this
year beneath a railroad bridge in
Berlin seems by morbid coincidence
to symbolize the revival of
interest in Hitler , his personality
and his circle. On the heels of
Albert Speer's Memoirs, a smattering
of films about Hitler have
appeared, the most commercial
being a remake of G.W. Pabst's
1948 version of "Hitler : The Last
Ten Days," this time with Alec
Guiness in Der Fuhrer s shoes.

It's accurate, understandable
and decently photographed ,
though I doubt anyone will be able
to take the film seriously.
Why "Hitler : The Last Ten
Days" comes off as melodrama is
due, I think, to two intriguing
things and one ordinary one: the
film Is in color. Hitler's career is
already on film and. as might have
been predicted, undependable Alec
Guiness hasn't the needed presen -
ce or power .
The psychological difference to
an event between black and white
and color photography was
•cleverly used in the last two
minutes of another film about
World War II, "Is Paris Burning?"
An aerial shot in black and white of
Paris on the day of its liberation in
1945 suddenly changes to color, instantly
implying by our natural
association with color that the
scene is of Paris today.
"Hitler : The Last Ten Days"
also should have been done in
black and white. At several places,
the camera goes outside Hitler's
bunker to devastated Berlin in
black and white and the effect
catapults us back to 1945, but when
we return to Hitler and his
mistress in color , blue-eyed and
brightly dressed inside the bunker.

three decades are suddenly
missing and we are obviously
somewhere in Pinewood Studios.
In spite of its being a re-enacted
documentary, flesh tones on Hitler
are disturbing and do the worst
thing possible to a film of this sort,
which is to remind us that it is
"only a movie."
Since films of Hitler do exist and

even now home movies taken by
Eva Braun recently found in the
Washington Archives, it's difficult
to accept anyone else iri the part of
the leader of the Third Reich.
We can accept Kirk Douglas as
Spartacus or Charles Laughton as
Captain Bligh, figures deep in an
unseen past, but Alec Guiness stepping
in for the murderer of six
