• Maple Drive Junior
Secondary is cU it
again.
The arts are importanl,
and Ken Hollcy is
doing something about it.
Although the threat of
having no music program
in future high schools is a
real possibility, extracurricular
elementary
band is alive and well.
On Monday, October
2.^rd, over 35 interested
sludents and their
parents again made their
way to the music room to
sign up for beginning
band.
The program, first
started lasl March on a
trial basis, was a great
success. Holley feels that
the only reason he has a
program this year is because
of the support that
he received from the students,
parents, and community
last year.
It is that support, he
said, that is needed again
if band and music are to
survive the loss of
elementary band, now in
ils fourth year of absence.
Williams Lake has
suffered the same fate,
resulting in no high
school band program.
Prince George is fighling
to keep their band programs
alive and others
may be on the horizon.
With the government
mandate of Fine Arts for
all students through
Grade 11, Holley said he
feels that band is a key
clement in that mandate.
The skills learned in
music arc easily Irans-
Icrahle in c\eryday life,
Irom cooperative learning
to individual .success
to interpersonal relationships,"
Holley said.
The elementary band
meets every Monday
from 3:.3() to 5 p.m. in the
Maple Drive music room.
Although the group has
been meeting for a
couple of months now,
IK)lley stressed thai it is
not too late to join, and
all elementary sludents in
Ouesnel are welcome.
As well, beginning
musicians of older ages
are encouraged to take
part.
"This program needs
your support, so help
keep the arts alive," Hol-
Icy said. "Support
elementary band and
other fine arts programs.
You'll be a better person
for it."
