preparations for the Town's Golden Anniversary in 1978.

Must have some mechanical knowledge of the 

; operation of a Street Sweeper.

maintenance work on a Street Sweeper and other 

related equipment.

nuticitionally balanced and does riot teach new eating 

habits. 

With planning, a reducing diet can be enjoyable as 

small portions of a wide variety of foods are combined. 

Pasta, such as spaghetti or macaroni, can be used as 

the basis for a nutritious, filling and low-calorie meal. The 

meal can be varied by using different types of pasta, 

always remembering that two ounces of uncooked pasta 

will make one cup cooked pastal 

A cup of cooked pasta contains under 200 calories. 

MEAT BALLS WITH NOODLES 

8 ounces (4 cups) egg noodles 

V4 pound ground lean beef 

'A cup chopped parsley 

2 tablespoons chopped onion 

1 teaspoon salt 

Vz teaspoon paprika 

2 tablespoons olive oil 

2 cups water 

1 chicken bouillon cube 

Salt and pepper 

Combine ground beef, parsley, onion, salt and paprika. 

Mix well. Shape into 1-inch balls. Heat olive oU in skiUet. 

Add meat balls and cook until browned on all sides. Stir 

in water and bouillon cube and bring to a boil. Cover and 

simmer 20 minutes. 

Cook noodles as directed on package. Drain. Arrange 

in serving dish. Lift meat balls from liquid and place on 

top of noodles. Season liquid with salt and pepper to 

taste. Pour over noodles. Serves 4.

1 pound thinly sliced beef sirloin, cut in strips 

2 tablespoons butter 

1 small onion, sliced 

6 green onions, cut in 1-inch pieces 

2 cups diagonally slices celery 

1 5-ounce can water chestnuts, drained and sliced 

1 tablespoon cornstarch 

'/4 cup soy sauce 

Prepare fresh spinach for cooking, or defrost frozen 

spinach in hot water. Measure liquid from mu.shrooms. 

Add enough water to make 1 cup. Heat to boiling and stir 

in bouillon cubes. Start cooking macaroni as directed on 

package. Drain. Meanwhile, in a large skUlet, saute beef 

in butter until lightly browned. Add drained spinach, 

mushrooms, onions, celery, water chestnuts and bouUlon. 

Cook covered 3 minutes. Blend cornstarch with soy 

sauce. Stir into skillet and boil 1 minute. Serve over hot 

macaroni with additional soy sauce, if desired. Serves 6.

Cook pepper, olives and onion in 1 tablespoon butter 

for 3 minutes. Add tomatoes, sugar and seasonings. 

Cover and simmer 20 minutes. Meanwhile, cook 

spaghetti as directed on package. Drain. Circle hot 

serving platter with spaghetti. Spoon most of the herb 

sauce over spaghetti leaving small amount in pan. Keep 

platter hot in low-temperature oven. Season steaks with 

salt and pepper. Stir remaining butter into pan and 

quickly cook steaks, browning on both sides. Arrange 

steaks in center of platter. Sprinkle cheese over 

herb-sauced spaghetti. Serves 4.

Every summer, the auto 

manufacturers shut down to 

retool their factories for the 

new models. The shut-down 

can carry on for .6 weeks or. 

more. During this period, 

workers are laid off. 

Normally, any worker" 

who is seeking unemploy 

ment insurance benefits is re-, 

quired to register first with 

Canada Manpower. Any 

worker who is not available- 

for work — or refuses work, 

arranged by Manpower - 

loses all unemployment in 

surance benefits. 

Auto workers are differ 

ent, tlioiigh. They are not re 

quired to register with Man 

power. For the first two 

weeks of the annual layoff, 

they collect holiday pay. The. 

ne.xt two weeks constitute' 

the statutory waiting period. 

Then tliey become available 

for regular U.l.C. benefits 

phis a special supplementary

companies. Taken together,.' 

these benefits equal 95 per 

cent of a worker's regular, 

pay. 

Other laid-off workers em 

ployed by big firms get simi 

lar treatment. The U.l.C. has 

a special provision for mass 

layoffs of less than seven 

weeks' duration: under these 

conditions, the Commission 

is allowed to waive the re 

quirement of registration for 

employment. 

This arrangement has seri 

ous implications for ail Cana

ments of the Canadian ta.x- 

payer for certain classes of. 

workers. The Canadian Fed 

eration of Independent Busi 

ness points out. quite rigluly, 

that workers who arc laid-off

ately for other employment 

if they wish to retain their'

ployer is in a position to re 

call the worker, that worker 

may have been forced to ac
